Roughly speaking I think?
Yup, that's what I was working my way towards at snail's pace. And then Izzet MTG News agreed with me on Twitter.
This is the perfect commander for a deck idea I had a few days ago, that is "force everyone to attack all the time". I scrapped it because I had no good general for it. Nice coincidence that they'd show us this now.
This "total war" ability had to be printed on a commander some day. It may not be that exciting or novel, but it's simple and greatly changes how the game is played when Thantis hits the battlefield. It really is an ideal ability for the command zone, especially if your group tends towards being drudly and slow.
I like the top-down flavor of the spider. It lures your opponents creatures into its net and then eats them.
Gameplay-wise, I think it is an interesting card. I like the "forced attacks plus shenanigans" deck trope, even if Gahiji, Honored One is probably a better commander. However, while you are lacking White's Comeuppance effects, Black does give you some interesting rattlesnake cards such as No Mercy or Dread or Ophiomancer. Certainly a commander that supports a strategy which is not super common in Jund at this point.

Still convinced the guy on Beseech the Queen is wearing a Mitra-type hat. Wake up sheeple!
I don't see why they put that in this deck as a secondary commander. In contrast to Tawnos and Brudiclad, which both care about artifacts, Thantis doesn't even synergize with any land-tactics. So much wasted potential....
To be fair, Brudiclad IS an Artifact, but he doesn't really care about them, he cares about tokens.
I'm not overly fond of this spider myself, but we always get alternative legendaries with their own line of play as secondary commanders and imo that's generally a good thing as it provides more diversity.
To me this spider doesn't strike me as "that's a neat proactive concept, i have to build this" Commander, but more like Ruric Thar, the Unbowed; a Commander you think would be able to shake your meta up. If you're playing with combo or control focused groups any deck that might want this guy for the general will have little impact. In a way its kind of the opposite to Ruric who focuses on making non-creature deck's lives hell, instead it forces bad situations from creature based decks that might be hoping to hold back from swinging for a latter turn Craterhoof Behemoth.
I attack you with my 10 x 1/1 Warrior tokens and use Najeela, the Blade-BlossomWUBRG ability to have an additional attack and hit you with an additional 20 x 1/1 Warriors, seeing as they must attack.
.. I block two of them with my 35/35 Thantis the Warweaver...yeah I'm dead, my deck sucks.

This kinda implies that you just slam your commander on the battlefield, no matter what the boardstate looks like.
Imo, Thantis is the kind of commander you wanna cast at the right time, just like concordant crossroads isn‘t always good but if played in the right situation, it wins you the game.
Cards like Dread or No Mercy serve you as backups, so that you‘re not the target of your opponents attacks.
Sure, they can be destroyed, but so can a lot of key cards to a lot of different strategies.
Something that lets you remove counters from a creature to ping creatures or players would be really spicy here...

Just add Fog effects and then attack with your big mama spider. You need to build around it to give it trample/evasion/protection and so on though. I personally think Kresh is faster and overall better but the "all creatures attack each combat if able" ability adds some spice.
I mean there is already Fumiko the Lowblood .. and yes nobody plays her because she is terribad.
They could have put more flavor into the card or at least cost less. It has a massive web, so why not let it block a couple of additional creatures, so that at least it can stand alone on attacks? Maybe have some activated ability which "lures" at least one in, i.e. "BRG Target creature attacks you this turn."

Cheers, I was trying to remember the black propaganda effect!
Wasn't there a red one either?
I think with all those options, a lot of recursion and the best tutors, you can make this strategy pretty viable. It can basically become a Disrupt Decorum every turn, which isn't the worst.
The red one is actually land theme but very very very specific land theme Glacial Crevasses
Also obviously plays well with the Mazes and Glacial Chasm

Finally a spider commander in the colors we actually wanted (that being red and green, the black is just a bonus). Going to be building a spider deck around it.

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).
Brudiclad is an artifact and make an artifact token every turn. He can also turn your token creatures into artifacts if you have an artifact token. That's something.
This spider doesn't do ***** with lands, except requiring them for being casted.
This. There could have been so many land-related abilities, like dealing 1 to flying creatures (and/or players), making creatures lose flying, having creatures not untap (not really GR but thematic for the web), giving stuff reach, creating baby spiders. This is a neat card, but underwhelming that it's not on the land theme.
