I haven't seen this discussed on the forums, either here or in Arena discussion. sorry if I'm creating a duplicate. With yesterday's patch, five unique cards have been introduced to MTG Arena (one of which I would love to see on paper, for the sake of white commander players). Source here.
Is this the first sign of WotC going digital? Is this the end of Magic as we know it? (No, but let the doomsday predictions flow anyway.) How do you folk feel about this?
Off the top of my head, there's also a 2/1 Flash for 1B, an instant for 1B that destroys a creature with power 2 or less, some low power goblins, a 3BB 5/5 can't block that etb deals 5 damage to opponent and some others I don't remember.
Yes, it is a mess, but the only card that is constructed playable is the 3BB 5/5 that deals 5 damage to an opponent as an ETB (actually would be kind of pushed in a blink deck). Since the cards haven't been published/printed in any other format, it shouldn't be a huge deal in the end.

Right, but they are eventually going to print cards that are constructed playable. It's like the buy a box. First was the Firesong and Sunspeaker which wasn't a big deal because it's a mediocre commander card at best. Then they printed Nexus of Fate which has definite constructed potential. Maybe it will be good or maybe it won't but it's definitely playable.

The Buy-a-Box promo is actually an even bigger mess. I've been testing Nexus of Fate in a Bant ramp/control build, and if the game goes on long enough, you will inevitably start chaining extra turns, perhaps indefinitely. I'm sure that there will be others who come up with their own ways to do this, but the point is that it's potentially one of the most powerful cards in Standard, and there is a very, very limited supply of it, which will cause prices to skyrocket once the card shows up in a winning decklist.

I haven't played the game with the new update because stuck on Checking for Updates....

That sounds ripe for abuse if it was legal in real formats.
I am not a fan of WOTC splitting formats like this we might end up in the Yugioh situation with regionally (online vs offline) split formats.
So they could have done the Aswan Jaguar and created cool cards that can't exist in paper, but instead they decided to keep treating novice players like idiots.
Yeah, it's WotC.

I'm not sure they want to go down that road. One thing I love about Magic is that there are no RNG shenanigans and I hope it will say that way. Sure, with digital products, they certainly can, but they probably shouldn't. There already was some potential for digital-only random effect cards in MTGO, so I don't think WotC is planning to tap into this one.
Well lets hope that with this arena can have a its own meta that at least looks a little diferent than real cards’ standard
Wotc seems to be trying to create multiple "Standards" - first they introduced the Global Series, with new cards being standard-legal only in one region, now they added new cards into a digital product. Playability of both sets of cards is highly questionable, but the Buy-a-Box promos seem to be getting stronger (yes, I know two cards are not a reliable sample size).

I think this goes against the purpose of arena teaching players how to play paper magic. Maybe sometime in the future after the product has been fully released they could add in an arena only format with these types of effects.

This seems like such a poorly thought out plan. So if you're a new to magic player using arena and you build a deck you might then find if you wanted to play paper that the cards don't even exist?
If arena is supposed to be serious it should keep in line with paper and mtgo. Its irrelevant if the cards are bad, it's just confusing to people.
Maybe they want to switch things up and make the digital game the main thing and the paper game the secondary thing. Basically, do what Blizzard did with the World of Warcraft TCG and replacing it with hearthstone.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!

Did you skip the tutorial after the update? They are in the decks that you play against during the tutorial

Whelp, every other magic artist can go home. This is it. We've reached the pinnacle. From now on cards may as well be blank pieces of white cardboard.
My gosh. Bluebeard's head wound up on the beach!
Actually, I'd go so far as to say the skull is what makes it cute.
On its own that's pretty good. A decent 0/4 "wall" that fends off a lot of early <=3-power rushes.

Or Vanguard. That would be cool.
