Why isn't the name "Arcades Sabboth, the Strategist"? Every other Elder Dragon is named according to their Legends version.
I'm guessing purely because it'd be obnoxiously long in the name box and they'd have to shrink the text size, and then this marquee mythic legendary Dragon would look a little like French Gore-House Chainwalker.
Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire barely fits in its box and it's five characters shorter than "Arcades Sabboth, the Strategist".
LOL @ the French Chainwalker....
But yeah, you are right.

A bit risky to use this as a commander, isn't it? If it gets locked out somehow, you're left with a deck of creatures that can't attack.
If you're playing this as a commander you have all three colors that can deal with those very things that may try to shut him out of the game. There's also Assault Formation for a bit of extra redundancy.
since i already got a dragon edh i was super excited when i saw the 3/5 flyer with vigilance for 3 mana (due to the commander) with alot of text... hell, this must be a good card
than i read the next
never felt so sober
so disappointing.
printing such a card in 2018 ... as if defender has any meaning in magic nowadays
Defender "doesn't have any meaning" because defending is usually all they do.
Arcades turns all of those normally harmless cheaply-costed walls into massive beatsticks, and gives you card advantage for putting them on board.
Doran let you flip the script with high toughness creatures, but he doesn't disable defender, which locks out a lot of high-toughness creatures without something like Assault Formation. Arcades actually addresses that.
Love it! Been looking for a nice commander for a wall deck, and here he is!

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Well the good news is a quick Gatherer search revealed there are in fact enough decent defenders to assemble a VERY casual EDH deck. The Bad news is almost every one of them is nothing more than a 0/X wall if Arcades is answered. Good luck closing out the game with Basilica Guards.
I do think however that a very fun 60 card kitchen table control deck could be assembled with Arcades. Any deck that utilizes 4x of Wall of Omens / Wall of Blossoms has my attention.

EDIT TO AVOID DOUBLE POSTING:
I just realized that Amaranthine Wall is a homage to Living Wall. It's essentially an updated version of it!
Whoa. I mean, it was pretty subtle, but I feel dumb for not realizing that initially now.

Ooh that's spicy. Now that our initial search for "defender" is out of the way, we need to know more about the supporting characters like Sidar.
Feel free to tell me yours!
On the other hand, I know that I'm eventually getting absolutely hosed by Siege Dragon.
Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest WUR Voltron Control
Temmet, Vizier of Naktamun WU Unblockable Mirror Trickery
Ra's al Ghul (Sidar Kondo) and Face-Down Ninjas
Brudiclad, Token Engineer
Vaevictis (VV2) the Dire Lantern
Rona, Disciple of Gix
Tiana the Auror
Hallar
Ulrich the Politician
Zur the Rebel
Scorpion, Locust, Scarab, Egyptian Gods
O-Kagachi, Mathas, Mairsil
"Non-Tribal" Tribal Generals, Eggs
A wall tribal deck is number 1 on his list
And remind to everybody this is what Arcades does he focuses on toughness rather than power
Feel free to tell me yours!
Not all creatures with defender are walls.
Philosophy being the best offense is a good defense? Idk
Kind of sore thinking about how good the art could have been. Theres like zero detail on the background. Just a dragon and his plastic castle wall
I was gonna suggest Warmonger's Chariot, but that's a good one too.

I agree on the art. Arcades himself looks pretty cool, but the wall in front of him apparently consists of freshly-poured concrete.
