Chromium’s ability is awful. I understand it’s flavor related, but yikes is that garbage. Its static stuff is fine at least. m
Why is Chromium's ability awful? Looking at it, giving himself hexproof for the turn by discarding a card (and he's something you'd theoretically run in a control deck, so cards to discard for him shouldn't be too much of a issue) doesn't seem terrible to me.
Also, regarding Omniscience, it's neat that Jodah Brawl has access to one of Jodah's best big spells.
He loses all abilities, becomes a 1/1 and gains hexproof and unblockable. At 7 mana and 3 colors, it should be doing a lot more. You’re going from a 7/7 to a 1/1. Yes, it gains hexproof and can’t be blocked, but there are so many better options as a finisher.
Chromium is only killable in niche situations. It is 7 mana, but it's also an uncounterable evasive 7/7 at instant speed that protects itself very well.
What do you want it to do? Bake cookies?

What open mana they have to tap out to cast this sucker? Unless we are assuming they have Teferi out to give them two mana?
Also I am not sure I consider trading one removal card and casting the new Mare or Chainwhirler as trading 2 for 1 since you still got a body on the field. Two bodies if you used Ravenous Chupucabra.
Speaking of Chainwhirler does Shield Mare give me 3 life when Chainwhirler ETBs me?
No, you don't gain 3 life. Chainwhiler's ETB ability doesn't target. As it's ability doesn't use the word TARGET, it says EACH opponent and EACH creature/planeswalker they control.

Sure but you a 1/1 so chainwhirler bait. I wouldn't mind it so much if you became a human that was like a 2/2 or something that cannot die from incidental damage. But yeah add me to the list of not impressed with these New Elder Dragons did I expect Standard Playable (nope overcosted for that most likely maybe worth cheating in other formats) no but I at least expected cool Commander Cards.
BR now gets two chainwhirler effects? Way to go WOTC. Hell of a Job.

Totally disagree. This is our new Standard control finisher. Better than Nehazel, even. SB all-star, easy. It will never see play vs. Chainwhiler decks, but even if you did, they have to have (then resolve) Unlicensed Disintegration, THEN a Chainwhirler to beat the flying 7/7 wall that beats its whole deck. Against control, where it belongs, anything short of Settle The Wreckage gets laughed at, as long as you have cards in hand. It even gets past your opponent's Chromium to chip away at their life total, or pressure their planeswalker. I play control exclusively, I DO NOT want to play against this. I'm 90% sure I'm putting Lost Legacy in my SB.
I don't even think Chainwhirler works as Chromium removal. Chromium has flash. There are very few situations where you shouldn't be playing Chromium at instant speed. End of your opponent's turn Chromium. You untap, attack, pass. If you don't have a counterspell, in your control deck to at the very least counter a chainwhirler. On turn 8. Against a mono red aggro deck. On turn 8 (against an aggro deck). You probably deserve to lose your 7/7 to 3cmc goblin.

So then Esper Control is worth playing to your mind?
You make a good point about it being good in mirrors but I am not sure I be especially worried about winning the Mirror if I am playing control.
Esper AKA UB with a white splash for Teferi, Hero Of Dominaria, is the most played Standard control deck right now, and IMO, easily the best. Having flash AND being uncounterable makes it great against ANY control variant. I'd probably play it against midrange, too. What do they do about it? Worst case scnario, it's a flying 7/7 wall.

Eh I only really look at the Top 8 for standard tournaments so I will take your word for that.
Your opponent can only play Chainwhirler on their own turn, so if you flash Chromium in and they want to use Chainwhirler, they have to wait at least 1 turn (which you get to attack in) AND have to spend an additional removal spell. That's more than OK if you're playing Control.
Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
Chromium’s ability is awful. I understand it’s flavor related, but yikes is that garbage. Its static stuff is fine at least. m
I disagree. In some scenarios its ability is better than Nezahal's, as it only costs 1 card, and thus you can use it multiple times if need be. It's often not worth it to discard six cards to have Nezahal dodge a spell, and being disallowed hurts. With Chromium, if you Disallow the trigger, he just discards another card.
I don't really understand the fuzzy talk about ''it dies to chainwhirler'' and stuff. I would never want to board a ''7 mana do nothing against aggro'' card in against R/x decks, but it feels perfect as an additional finisher in control mirror matches and slightly better than Nezahal. For me it's a nice 1 of in the sideboard of a UBw control deck.

You don't have to tap out on your turn. The whole reason this guy has flash is to make him more suitable to Control play.
Chromium is interesting. You get a big blocker and potentially beater, or you can shrink him and make him untouchable for a turn. Give him a Quietus Spike or Scytheclaw and let him go to town.
Horsies! *happy Brony sounds* Diamond Mare reminds me of one of my favorite ponies...
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Sure if you can get to Turn 8 against BR or R aggro and they don't just direct damage to the face you to finish you off.
I think NSC makes the better point, useful in the control Mirror.
That's more of a statement about deck building and matchups than the card itself, which is what this discussion was about. I don't think a player building a control deck that doesn't have answers for aggro reflects on Chromium.

What the hell were they thinking with chromium?
Terrible commander
Not every legendary creature is made for Commander, even if it's an Elder Dragon.
I dunno, I think his Human mode can work pretty well with the right Equipment. The main draw for me is that he can give himself hexproof and attack without being blocked, while also being a free discard outlet.

I wonder what it could be?
You'd think DIAMOND Mare would be more than 3 toughness.
Chromium's trinket text has some interesting value: It can be a discard outlet, dodge removal, dodge a Retribution of the Meek, Whirlwind, or Crux of Fate
Plague Mare seems aimed at white tokens.

Chromium is the best of the new Elders so far. Control finisher for sure. Might drop one into my Esper Historic Flash deck too.
