Unfortunately, while cute attempts, those don't actually work. All that would manage to do is to kill the new Flip-Bolas.
Transform is a very specific instruction, to turn the permanent over, so the other face is up. Note this happens without it leaving the battlefield and re-entering, it just changes the characteristics of the permanent. But as the other side is a Planeswalker, that would mean it has no loyalty counters (Unless you found some way to put counters on him BEFORE trying this.) so Bolas would just be sent to the graveyard due to State-Based Actions.
That is why Bolas (and all the Origin Flip-Walkers), exile themselves first, before returning them transformed. So they can re-enter the battlefield as Planeswalkers, with loyalty counters.
Bolas > Gilded Lotus (+ Disallow back up) > flip. This is going to be played in standard, no matter what Glorybringer has to Cut...
And it's a great Commander for Brawl ! Yay.
Ajani is beautiful but looks like garbage for constructed, as always.

Pioneer - A bunch of stuff Modern - Humans Legacy - Grixis Phoenix / Death & Taxes
I thought a large part of Bolas's appeal was supposed to be that he's, you know, a dragon. Not an orc. Not a gremlin. Not an ape. Flattening his face doesn't "humanize" him, it makes him look stupid.
That's a really solid and fun-looking card, though. But as a Vorthos, I can't get past that art. This current art direction needs to stop.
Best bolas art for me is the FTV creature one because he actually looks like a dragon. Behold my Grandeur and the Invocation Damnation are okay. The Archenemy Bolas planeswalker is also fiiiine. Really wish they stopped making him fugly. Hell, even the creature version here has a normal dragon face, yet (I assume) they told the artist to make him ugly in the walker part.
I'd like if Ugin's card had a WUBRG ability so he can be played with Morph cards in all colors.
If MtGsalvation ever makes a yearbook, you know that's going to be your quote. "Let's put a WUBRG ability on it for Commander!"
There is really nothing indicating that this set's version (given there is one) should be especially synergistic with morph - I'd wait for that trick until Ugin actually appears in a set with it. (That said there is that black kill spell that might just be a hint of something colorless creeping around the corner.

It's ultimately a matter of perspective. Straight-on close-up looks like In Bolas's Clutches and this get the complaints because of how the "camera" angle makes him appear. The actual art style is perfectly fine, even though that element gets most of the flak. In this case, it just seems more flattering to show him from a distance or from an angle. Keen observation reveals that the original Conflux Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker art has him in a half-turned stance that makes the transition between the full-profile of his Duel Decks art and what we see here readily apparent.
Love the flavor and power of Bolas. Too bad he will have all the playability of a Potato in Modern.
I'm sure Commander players will rejoice.
Maybe a flip Ugin will be more Modern playable being in colorless hopefully.
As for Ajani, I like the card although it seems a bit boiler plate and uninspired as well as a bit underpowered. But its Ajani and I just like him, always have.
Ajani is beautiful but looks like garbage for constructed, as always.
My thoughts exactly.

I'm so hyped for this card! I'd definitely love to see them do more pre-sparked planeswalkers like this (PLEASE give us an Ugin in this set!). I'm also hoping that future core sets will continue to tell stories from the past.
I love both artworks for this card, but I find it interesting that they chose blues for the background since Bolas is most often framed with golds and oranges.

As an Elder Dragon planeswalker, it's possible Bolas may have the ability to reshape his face and no sane person is going to tell him "Dude, your face looks ugly!"

"We'll build a wall and together we'll make Commander great again!"
What can I say, I like one and all designs (or in this case, I suppose you could call it "none and all" ). But I'm not trying to make everything WUBRG; I acknowledge not every fan wants to cram cards of every color in their decks all the time, so I'm an advocate of various color choices. Take Knights for example; I of course would like a WUBRG Knight legend down the line, perhaps another OAA, but I'm also pleased that we now have at leastfouroptions for WB Knight commanders, one of whom is even Knight tribal.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

He just forgot to add Oath of Gideon, but for all that work I would rather just pay the mana.
Cool card, but I honestly like the other versions of Bolas better. Flipped he doesn't even deal with creatures by himself, which I find strange. Completely misread that. He is a killer. I like him a bit better now. Still very hard to flip and protect, but if he did instant flip would be too good.
Bolas is sweet. A 4/4 flier that makes your opponent discard when he enters is strong by itself and to be fair he does dodge a number of removal like the 3 damage burn spells, cast down and such.

Even Oath of Gideon doesn't help. As he never enters the battlefield as a Planeswalker, unless you use his own ability. He enters as a creature. Then if he is transformed by anything other than his own ability, he never re-enters the battlefield. He just changes characteristics from creature to planeswalker.
I would love for their to be a way to break him and have his Planeswalker side for 4-mana. But there just isn't a way to do it. There wasn't for the Origins Flip-Walkers, and there isn't now.
It's an ok Nicol Bolas I guess. He's dirt cheap to cast if your commander is The Ur-Dragon. Not much of a creature on his own aside from an ETB that is barely annoying I guess. If you get lucky and find a chance to flip him before his creature form is killed you get a nice set of abilities. This is a Nicol Bolas I can understand being shoehorned into an Ur-Dragon deck.
It's worth noting that JtMS's ult forces the player to redraw their entire hand, so even though flip Bolas gives them a much shorter clock, it's not always the better ult.
Am I crazy for thinking this Bolas might actually be worth playing in Modern? See it this way: you're a Grixis player who controls and stalls for days, with counters and hand disruption (Inquisition, Thoughtseize, Kolaghan's Command etc) aplenty. In such a context, wouldn't you think that a relatively cheap flying beater that further disrupt the opponent's hand on ETB is a sweet enough deal? If you play your cards right, you can get the big fella on the field safely while leaving the opponent empty-handed. And then... Welp, I was about to say "then you have the ability to flip the guy in your opponent's EOT later on, getting yourelf a wincon without having to tap out in your turn", which would have really been the main selling point of the card... But then I read it again and it's sorcery speed. Meh
No, not crazy, but it has the usual issues. I'll drag out the first. "Dies to everything". You play this on turn 4 and tap out you leave yourself open to anything. Path and Push have no problem along with the other usual removal spells. If he had haste I might think differently. If you do land it and manage to protect it via counter until turn 7 and you -3 or -4 it, it better be a game ender. A lot of the aggro decks have already done their thing, combo has probably already done its thing, big mana has done its thing, leaving midrange as a possible victim.
It looks decent at first, but it would be too slow I believe. My 2 cents, I've been known to be wrong.
In all coresets Ajani is in he is number 01. Here he is 03, that means we could get up to 2 colorless cards Wink
Don't get my hopes up for Karn Liberated reprint at #1. (Assuming Ugin DFC at #2).

Bolas checks most of the boxes for Standard playability. People won't play Grixis JUST to play this, but it definitely goes in there if it's a decent deck anyways. It's immune to Glorybringer and trades with it at parity which is massive. The major strike against it is that Chandra still kills it.
Coreset-Planeswalkers seem alrady a lot weaker than in regzlar blocks. Ajani is so basic . . . +1 not bad, but again just lazy. They coulda given it temporal Flying, Vigilance, etc. -2 underwhelming. When will he finaly make actual tokenz as one of the top-Loyality-abilities ?
Everybody complaining how this is bad in Standard and so few realizing how this is GOD in EDH. Actually, I would say they designed this Bolas especially to be super-fun and powerful to play in EDH, and a way to play him as Planewalker general. Great.
No way... Like so many other cards. Wasted design space.
