This is an ETB trigger? Wow. This is an ETB trigger. Cards nuts. Excellent target for Goryo’s Vengeance?
Yeah, that's exactly what I thought.
Turn 1 Faithless Looting, discard Torgaar.
Turn 2 Goryo's Vengeance, reanimate Torgaar, opponent goes to 10, hit for 7, opponent goes to 3.
Turn 3 burn spell of your choice.
That sequence seems so easy it's scary. Am I missing something?

It's doable, requires 3 specific cards in the top 9-10 of your library, plus a burn spell, plus no lifegain shenanigans from your opp. It's a lot better Game 1 before hate comes in, but a T1 Nihil Spellbomb or a Blessed Alliance T2 or 3 just ruins your day.
That said, this could still have serious potential, it doesn't have to hit T2 to be a good play so that's a very big point in it's favour, giving you more time to assemble your reanimation engine.
Well this is awesome. It always annoyed me that the only way my TSG could win was slowly grinding an opponent out. Total buzzkill for an under-powered card like The Scarab God to get pigeonholed into that slow strategy. Now it can race.
Standard will be able to abuse this, as well. Turn 1 Concealed Courtyard, something like Sacred Cat or Legion's Landing; turn 2 an untapped source of black mana, Servo Exhibition; turn 3, tap your 2 lands, sac your three creatures, Torgaar. It won't have haste as it would in Modern, but so what? Opponent already to 10.
I think its worth mentioning that since it targets any player, it can also be lifegain spell, in a pinch. Putting a 7/6 flyer down for as little as BB and gaining as much as 9 on ETB could be just as relevant as whacking them. Plays pretty sweet in that regard with Arguel's Blood Fast.
Omfg. Yes! My favorite card in the set! The art is even pretty decent. But what and where does this depict?
Mono Black Sui EDH here i come!
Monoblack? It struck me immediately as for everyone's favorite combo card Ghave, where I already run Panharmonicon and could be persuaded to run more blink cards if I actually had more creatures.
Besides Ghave, it could also be used with any other token deck with enough black. Or reanimator and just pretend that mana cost doesn't exist.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!

Fair observations. The absolute blowout seems to be doing it all on T2 with Simian Spirit Guide for the bolt.

Lifegain in Modern isn't really a thing outside Soul Sisters or MartyrProc, and it wouldn't matter since you go to 10 regardless of where you were at. However, decks in Modern do tend to drain their own life, with Shocks, Fetches, and T-Seize.

"I hope to have such a death... lying in triumph atop the broken bodies of those who slew me..."
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
It may be late game but this seems to combo nice with Josu Vess when Josu Vess is kicked. Seems like I may actually try brawl monoblack this time around.

TBH I was thinking Blessed Alliance specifically for lifegain, it's a commonly played card in sideboards that can either kill the attacker or neutralise the lethal Bolt. That said, I can't honestly think that hitting Torgaar with a Goryo's is going to be a bad play, just that the T2/T3 win is rather unlikely. I know I'll be preparing to see this after DOM comes out.
Except its just not good enough for constructed, but oh boy, if it hits, it hits really hard and will produce some very funny / sad moments if you get outplayed or miss-time the activation.
The card probably just needed to be more aggresively costed and the ability to be cheaper (or outright free of manacost to abuse its effect with stuff that doubles your lifegain by switchering around its power).
Still like the card, but they really made sure its not a factor in constructed with all its issues.

It would be wayyyy to bonkers in EDH if it just always halved life totals. Saccing 3 creatures isn't a tough thing to do in that format.
And does this card make triskaidekaphovia any easier to achieve? Probably not.

Yeah, I saw that too but didn't want to mention because Magic Christmas Land, etc. But it doesn't seem impossible either.
Also, Fling is Standard legal (Amonkhet).... that's some scary business there!
