Wow. Everyone was waiting for the black member of the cycle and it was something Vorthos already has met in the story. And it's a damn special thing. In a monoblack deck Looming Shade just got two free activations permanently.
Definitely neat.

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.
[thread=239793][Game] Level Up - Creature[/thread]
There has to be a home for this in some devotion build. Either way, it’s pretty strong. Maybe not on par with the green one of the cycle, but I’m a fan.
Can also be cast for free off of Yahenni's Expertise which I assume is as close to Mutilate as we'll be getting during this guy's Standard stay.
I don't think mono-black will be good enough just because we're about to have 5 dual-type lands, the full 10 checklands and 5 fastlands, not to mention random fixers like Aether Hub and Spire of Industry. There has to be an extremely compelling reason to stay mono-colored and I don't think the knock-off Cabal Stronghold is good enough. I assume the only one of this cycle that will see any real play is Steel Leaf Champion simply because Llanowar Elves exists.
Any memory I have of Nantuko Shade in standard makes me think this guy is going to be strong! I love it!
That had Coffers, this has a worse (but still good) variant.
I could see this ****** dentata (and seriously, the art is an obvious reference to Delraich, so I stand by that) seeing play in black devotion as well. The deck already wants to be monoblack, and between Cabal Stronghold and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx (already popular with greenmages), modern may have a couple options away from 3+ colors.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
Quite a beating in limited if you're able to cast it.
Still I hoped for something a little less... vanilla?
We kinda knew it was gonna be plain from the fact that it wasn’t in the release notes. The other four cards in the cycle were all there - that basically telegraphed that there would be a black one too, but it would be so rules-trivial that it needed no release note clarification.
Fair, but neither trample or lifelink would have required it to appear in the rules FAQ. Personally, I love it as printed but I can see the original point.. there does seem to be a nagging question baked into the design.
I think this might make it in standard, but I really wish it was a 3/4 (to survive bolt for modern). This is pretty bland for a Rare (I know Nantuko Shade was a Rare, but there is a big difference between now and then).
Dies to a lotof2-manaStandardremovalspells without value. That's not a dealbreaker for a 3-drop, but it's not a great starting point when the card's mana cost slots it into a narrow deck selection to begin with.
Need to piece together the rest of the mono black deck to see what it looks like

This card suffers greatly from the BBB cost. I think it’s cost is appropriate for what it can do, but it’s in a color that wants a splash of some sort to pack protection so don’t get time-walked on the pump.
I’ll play it in a devotion style deck for EDH, I can support it there. It’s fun, just maybe not enough for Standard.

I definitely aggree, I think that elf is going to dish out some serious beatings in the upcoming meta, a 5/4 that can't be easily be given the Spartan greeting and can't be chumped either hitting play in T2? Sign me up.
About Dread Shade, well it's a nice throwback to Nantuko Shade, and it may be better in many situations, those 2 extra points of thoughness make a difference, after all, Nantuko Shade virtually costs BBB or even BBBBanyway since it can be killed on arrival by any pinger or cheap burn or P/T reduction spell.

Given that Nantuko came out next to Cabal Coffers and now we have a new coffers I can definitely see the comparison.

Anyway, the times of "shades" is pretty much over, spending mana just to get it killed by spot removal is extra terrible.

Its really just a "basic" common shade pimped up with a bit stats to make it a rare.
Next card please.

Mono black is "pay a price for power". This creature is less evolved than it's counterparts in the other colors. Not impressed.
