This is a no brainer in pretty much most modern decks with GWx. It's doubling up on so many effects those decks are already wanting...
leyline of sanctity privleged position gavony township selfless spirit spellskite
And more all lead to a similar playstyle, protect your combos or insulate you from combos/removal. 4 cmc and splashable is just kinda nuts imho. How do you not run this in anything even sniffing in the general direction of chord or eldritch evolution in modern.

She beats the snot out of a ton of other options in commander imho. She's a long way from being the weakest in the 99 even if she isn't your commander.
----------
For standard she needs one point of toughness to tangle with the formats biggest threats from red. Coupled with blossoming defense or heroic intervention and you have a hard to remove threat if they can't interact immediately.
While I can see this getting outpaced from dinosaurs, it still looks pretty frustrating for the reanmimation strategies like god pharaoh's gift decks.
I played a Sigarda, Heron's Grace deck on cockatrice a few times and liked the commander's function, but not the "human tribal" part (imo humans shouldn't be a tribe). May try and build a similar deck again with Shalai at the helm this time.
I will be using Shalai on my Souls Sisters deck, but that's about the only place i can see her being played (other then EDH)
EDIT
She could also see play as a sideboard option for BW tokens in modern.
Oh, I have no doubt she's Standard-playable.
At her worst, she's eating the Push out of your opponent's hand. But then you probably drop Lyra Dawnbringer the next turn, and your opponent wishes they still had removal.
At her best, she's keeping all your other goons alive FTW.

True, i completly forgot about STD, now days i only play budget mdn and EDH, if i'm not mistaken there was a GW aggro deck going around standard but since i don't know the exact curve/cards of the deck i don't know if it will be played there, hell you could even run 3 of her and use one or two just to eat the oponnent's Vraska's Contempt and Fatal Push
But std aside i think the only other place she will se play is EDH (Brawl too but so far i haven't seen anyone playing it so...) in MDN she could be a sb option for BW tokens, but the deck is already pretty solid and has Gideon and Sorin as 4 CMC so it's hard to put her there, maybe GW goodstuff?

Blossoming Defense is her friend for standard. With all the new playable removal spells, every deck will have good answers for creatures. Makes me think Control decks will be the winners of Dominaria.
Dammit, too bad Dauntless Bodyguard doesn't "name a card", it's a real bummer.

In other words, you completely forgot about one of the formats these sets are designed for.

I mean, if they don't play or keep up with that format, they won't be likely to judge cards by it or even necessarily know what would be used or how.

I know that, but it's the part where they said that they couldn't think of any other format than EDH or a few specific decks in Modern that led me to say that.
Just because one doesn't like a certain format doesn't mean they should forget that format exists, or that that format is a major factor in why cards are designed a certain way.

That's fair.
I know that I tend not to think about standard application so much either, as I haven't played it in a few years, but stuff printed in new standard sets most certainly apply there.

If only you had read MY post and not the quote ^^
Also, i don't think her design has anything to do with STD, she's a goodstuff card, that's all, but the fact is that Goodstuff deck's in MDN and LGC have cards that are much better then her. She will se play in STD? Sure, she eats removal, she protects your board, i just don't think that in the current STD meta you're going to have a board to protect by the time you play her.
Lyra Dawnbringer is the same (in terms of design) when i looked at her ability i thought about Innistrad not Dominaria, because while angels have always being a huge part of Dominaria lore (as a fellow vorthos you know that very well) they were never a major tribal in Dominaria, actually the only Plane in which angels mattered in terms of gameplay was, you guessed it Innistrad. Are some cards designed to fit the current STD rotation? Sure, but Shalai and Lyra aren't

Maybe he's referring to the fact that she specifically includes planeswalkers rather than allowing them into the club by happenstance.
I think the curvature just comes from the "lens" used to take the picture, so to say.
