Can someone give me a history of this guy? Looks pretty legendary and I started playing during Innistrad block
Long story, but he was the more or less main protagonist of the Weatherlight saga. Urza genetically engineered his whole family to produce the perfect hero who could destroy Phyrexia. A lot of swashbuckling and quipping later, Gerrard wound up being instrumental in the defeat of Yawgmoth, but not necessarily in the way Urza wanted it.

In other words, he became part of the Legacy Weapon that killed Yawgmoth, and died as a result.
Uh... did they tell the artist to replicate the iconic position of St. Michael statuary... because it's, uh, pretty exact.
Well, if you take Urza as a (rather uncaring and selfish) God the Father figure, Gerrard's more or less his strongest lieutenant and Yawgmoth is Satan. Parallels work pretty well here.

The best part is Urza and Gerrard ended up fighting in an arena against each other. High drama, that.
It was pointed out to me by jay13x (credit where it's due) that the pommel of his spear is actually the Null Moon in addition to the tip being the Weatherlight!

That. Is. Amazing. I can't wait to see the other Sagas. I REALLY hope they have a Dominaria artbook that's updated.

When I heard about the card spoiled, I figured they would either show Gerrard physically killing Crovax, or metaphysically killing Yawgmoth. They went with the later, which is cool, and a better illustration of what Vindicate was supposed to show. However, I do gripe that the victory over Yawgmoth was more Urza's doing than Gerrard's.
Can we agree this is a stylized, Geiger-Style illustration of Yawgmoth, tentacles galore? Sorta like Yawgmoth's Edict?

It is a depiction of Yawgmoth, specifically in the form he took as a pure black mana entity.
Gerrard is definitely a more appealing and unambiguous hero figure to focus on than Urza, if you look at it from the perspective of a Dominarian historian or sculptor. It's not a perfect comparison, but there's a good reason there are many more memorials for Martin Luther King than there are for Malcolm X. Gerrard's simply not as tainted or flawed as Urza, not by a long shot.
I agree. I think from a big-picture perspective (from the outside) Urza was a flawed hero, but from a Dominarian perspective, he caused the Ice Age and a lot of other hardships.
I do not agree on comparing Gerrard-Urza to MLK-Malcolm X. MX was no hero, he was a straight-up terrorist and racist. I will get back to you with a better historical comparison. Zhukov-Stalin is not fair either.
Also, the face and armor look like the myths combined Urza and Gerrard into one. Fascinating if this set examines how history and storytelling affects the legends of a more powerful past centuries later.
I guess its possible that in different areas Urza and Gerrard could be conflated but we've seen art in the trailer that depicts Urza in stained glass, practically giving him sainthood.
Aw man, I love the art on this. The way they've made him into a marble statue, symbolically wielding the weatherlight as his spear... *chef kiss*
I'm not totally sure what the watermark is supposed to represent though. Anybody know?
