I posted a question to Gavin on twitter about legality of a certain card, since there are 2 cards that would absolutely need it to be possible as commanders. Wastes need to be made evergreen legal if this format is going to take off, Because otherwise the new Karn and Hope of Ghirapur will have no land support if they are going to be picked as commanders.
I guess..... its ok. The idea of Modern Commander / Standard commander is not a new idea but allowing walkers as your commander is something new. Moving to a 60 card deck is probably a good idea given how small the set pool is.
I.... think it could be an interesting concept.... I am not really sure about this though but if it picks up I would be willing to play. I just don't think I would be an early mover on it.
EDIT: Ok..... they suggest this to be multiplayer which to me completely sinks this. If they were trying this as a 1v1 constructed format I think I would be far more interested but moving to multiplayer puts it too much in competition with commander which I cant really find all that acceptable. 1v1 commander has been plagued by the issues that it has constantly not had a consistant sanctioning and I would be far more behind this concept if it was designed to be played as a 1v1 format rather than a multiplayer FFA format.
Last year the format was tested in traditional standard tournaments ( like FNM ) ( on some stores ) It will not be as big as Standard nor be pushed in almost all big events but there is a huge chance for this to see some atrition on local tournaments. And yes 1x1 is good on this format.
Yeah I'm not feeling this. I mean it seems to me people are just going to play watered down standard decks but now they dont have to question whether or not they will draw their Hazoret or Scarab God. I'll just stick to Commander, thanks.
I'm alright with Planeswalkers as the commander in this format, because of one simple reason.
Standard legal cards means no Doubling Season.
That's one of the primary reasons PW are not commanders for Commander.
Well its a good theory but after all these years they've never actually printed a green planeswalker that can ultimate the first turn and is actually that backbreaking. They've printed some Army of the damned ones and gain 100 life but short of future hypothetical, green color identity planeswalkers are pretty tame with it. I mean yeah, its a strong play with some of them but not really game winning any more than the average timmyfied spell.
Ok.. so there are currently only 18 lands that will be legal in a colorless Brawl deck. Obviously there will be a few more in the next set... but still... that's not nearly enough for making a colorless Brawl deck....
This is really the rub that should make people mad whether you like Standard Commander or not;
they're introducing BRAWL to make more sales instead of fixing their problem (low standard participation) and playable card prices. They should be putting the full weight of promotions, ads, design, and LGS support behind making their game fire every Friday no matter what.
Oh yea... and if you like this one card... you'll have to buy a box because card prices aren't high enough.
The problem I have with it is that, after Dominaria, how many Legendary Creatures are going to be in Standard? We need a lot to make a diverse set of decks possible. I cannot imagine Legendary-matters will be a theme in other sets.

Since wastes are a basic land, shouldn't they be allowed without any rulings? I do not play standard, but technically can't you use wastes now since they are a basic land type?
Ah, my dose of daily MtG Salvation cynicism. Nice.
While I think it's nice having some variety to Commander (too many Commander decks use the same staples all the time), I can see multiple problems arising with this. Brawl could end like Tiny Leaders. And most importantly, I'm not exactly stoked for having to pay prices inflated by Standard legality for my Commander cards and then having to throw most of them away after rotation.
I wish them all the luck with this one, but I can't say I'm optimistic about it.

No, for the same reason Snow-Covered Basics are not legal in Standard, they were not printed in a current Standard-legal set.

I might be wrong but I think that the only reason Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests are standard legal is because they are printed in every standard set. So since Wastes hasn't been printed since Oath of the Gatewatch they are no longer legal.

I can get the skepticism. I do not doubt for a moment that increasing profitability is the first, second, and third motivation for making this format.
On the other hand, it does have a genuine audience. Consider the following sentence:
"With brawl, I can play an optimal deck without owning dual lands"
Some people 1) do not like the feeling that they are using suboptimal cards, 2) do not have the money to get optimal cards, and 3) do not want to skip entire sets and products (avoiding the money sinks of standard and limited) to save the money needed for optimal cards.
Whether this entitlement(?)/ lack of prudence should be rewarded with a new format (and I think not) is kind of besides the point.
The facts, as I see them, are these:
1. This format definitely has an audience out there (though its size is yet to be seen).
2. This format has built-in synergy with limited and standard play (to the point where standard players might purchase a Brawl product [maybe] with chase cards and Brawl players might buy a Challenger deck)
3. The cost of building a brawl deck is likely to be less than that of a standard deck (due to the singleton nature), making it one of the cheaper formats to play competitively.

I feel like they missed the mark a little here. IMO, the issue isn't that I need another thing to do with Standard-legal cards, but that I need another format to play them in once they rotate out of Standard as so few them will fit into Modern or EDH due to the changes in design sensibility. Otherwise, the perceived value of purchasing new packs is too little as too many of the cards are useless post-Standard.
The problem I have with it is that, after Dominaria, how many Legendary Creatures are going to be in Standard? We need a lot to make a diverse set of decks possible. I cannot imagine Legendary-matters will be a theme in other sets.
every set you are garanteed to have 4 new commanders. Cause planeswalkers can be commanders.
As someone WITH all the dual lands, I'll still probably give this a try at least. Mana bases will be tough with only singltons of any given nonbasic, though. 3 color will have a legitimate downside. I like that we can avoid sol ring, mana crypt, and busted old combo pieces, but rotation in general tends to make me uncomfortable. Idk why, really, considering I build new commanders almost every week anyway. One thing I think would be interesting is if you could use an older commander but with standard-only cards in the deck. Straight up losing the whole deck when the commander rotates seems like a bummer, even though that's what standard essentially does already.
Anyway best case this attracts some new blood. Worst case it withers on the vine and dies out in a few months. I guess we'll see what happens. I'm buying the cards for my commander collection anyway, so I don't lose much to give it a try.

Uh....I'm pretty sure the format doesn't NEED karn and (lol) hope of ghirapur to be playable for the format to take off.
Realistically colorless EDH with standard only-cards is going to be trash with or without wastes. Changing the rules to accommodate them seems like a *waste* of time.
Wizards is a for-profit company. There's no point in criticizing what they do solely on the basis of being an attempt to make money because that characterizes every single thing they do. This game EXISTS because Hasbro and WoTC found it to be PROFITABLE. Everything that isn't an obvious attempt to sell something is a PR move, which in turn is designed to increase profitability. It has always been like this, it will always be like this, and any attempt to convince you otherwise is either a PR move or a nostalgic self-delusion. I spend my money in full knowledge that it's exactly what this company wants out of me. That's the tradeoff here. They get a portion of my money that I wish to spend on leisure, and, in exchange, I get hours of entertainment.
Now that the "well, duh," reminder is out of the way, this looks like a fairly enjoyable format. I'd definitely be willing to at least give it a shot, and it shouldn't be that expensive because most of a given deck I would build is comprised of cards picked up in draft.
Ok.. so there are currently only 18 lands that will be legal in a colorless Brawl deck. Obviously there will be a few more in the next set... but still... that's not nearly enough for making a colorless Brawl deck....
Wastes are not Standard legal for the same reason that Snow-Covered Islands are not legal in Standard. They were not printed in a currently Standard legal set. Basic supertype doesn't guarantee set legality.
One of the main draws for me with Commander is that it is a non-rotating format. I continue to buy cards all the time, but I do so knowing that they will remain useful and relevant. I have always avoided rotating formats because it's just a feel-bad to have something I bought no longer be legal or useful. That alone drives me away from this format. If they made it more like Modern Commander-Lite, where it used all new cards starting in Dominaria or some other set and moving forward, without rotation, I might build a deck or two, knowing I could keep tinkering with them and playing them for years to come. but I'm not going to build decks from a limited card pool with suboptimal card options only to have to destroy them in a year or so. I'd rather just play commander with superior card options and unlimited card lifespan.
This is pretty great. I already build my commander decks standard (limited as a matter of fact) legal. A faux-constraint to keep my wallet in check and I like a more consistent theme with my cards.

Jodah, Archmage Eternal New Perspectives combo seems fun and potentially viable off the top of my head.
