It looks like if you preorder a box of Dominaria, you will be able to specify that you want to pick it up at prerelease. Also, Firesong and Sunspeaker will ONLY be available as a BAB Promo.
Also, tomorrow (Thurs 22-Mar) we will find out about a new variant of Commander, Brawl, which will only use standard legal cards.
For anyone who wants to see what standard Commander can look like, MTGGoldfish has an EDH video series where sometimes they make such decks to play against each other. Look here.
Standard commander? Sorry, but this sounds just a tad ridiculous. Well, time to get those scarab gods bois, gonna 4:0 those brawl fnms until rotation if this becomes a thing.
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.

If it's that dominant they'll ban it. They've shown no hesitation on the banhammer lately.
Hmm, Standard Commander sounds iffy to me. I'd expect a lot of jank would be forced to be played if you combine the one of rule with the limited pool of Standard. Maybe they'll do something nuts like dig Extended out of its grave and slap Commander on it.
My biggest concern for that idea is Dominaria. Sure having all those legends will let the new format hit the ground running, but the flip side is they're either going to have to make upcoming sets more legend heavy than we've seen, or the format will have an audible crunch when Dominaria rotates out. Unless they do something absolutely bonkers and use Dominaria as a tent pole and say 'this doesn't rotate.' That also raises the question, will the Commander deck cards, the product sold to push the format, be playable in this new Brawl format?
Naysaying aside, I do think it's a good idea. With the ever increasing cost of Reserve List cards Commander is starting to slide into the same money pit that the other eternal formats have become. Plus it'll finally give set-locked legends like Admiral Beckett Brass and Gishath, Sun's Avatar a place to shine.
What is odd, is 'Standard Commander' as even a thing. Are we going into 'Legendary Matters' for more than Dominaria? Extended design focus over multiple sets?
I'm afraid of Brawl for the simple fact that WoTC has a great reputation for ******* up. I don't want Commander and ****up to be in the same sentence, or proximity even.
EDH is my favorite format, I expect this new variant to have segregated design teams and product lines. I EXPECT IT.
Don't water down my EDH for Standard, WoTC.
WoTC must keep the Brawl product and Commander products separate. Or else I'm checking out of this game.
I don't want weaksauce Standard cards making appearances in straight up Commander products. I've been pushing for WoTC to segregate the eternal format products from Standard-legal products for some time now and if we have a muddling of the waters in Commander, then we as players will have lost serious ground.
Keep that hot mess called Standard in a box. A separate box. As a separate product. With a separate design team too!

Neat. I've been encouraging stuff like that for a while. Last time we combined it with "Standard plus the original sets of the planes we returned to" for BfZ/SoI.
I wish it was more frequent and this might encourage a crowd for it.
EDIT: Now they just need to make a non-Singleton Commander variant and they are catching up to my model.

I'm excited to see if Brawl is a singleton format or not, and what the required deck size is. It could be 60 card non-singleton, but that would make it very similar to Standard. 100 card singleton sounds like it would force you to play some very weak cards, and that most of the decks woukd have the same cards. The format itself sounds fun, but I don't see myself buying into a potentially more obscure EDH variant that competes with Standard for card prices and rotates frequently.
In hindsight, a lot of cards and decisions lately make more sense when knowing that they were working towards this becoming a thing. The last few sets have had a LOT of commander cards, and PWs becoming legends, and the frame...
But I just realized the insidiousness of Brawl thanks to considering Legacy banlist vs. Commander banlist. Brawl can circumvent the Rules Committee - a new format in full control of Wizards. No more committee-decided banlist. o.o

No, the insidiousness of Brawl doesn't have anything to do with Wizards' control over a banlist. It has everything to do with increasing the demand of Standard cards, and thus drive up the sales of sealed Standard product. A card like Sandwurm Convergence that is likely to never see play in traditional Standard could be a staple in a Brawl ramp deck.
In other words, jank cards that would never be touched in Standard could be in high demand (i.e. expensive) because of Brawl

Well, brawl would need to become popular to have that happen in the first place and I kinda doubt that it will...
A lot of EDH/Commander's appeal comes from the virtually endless possibilities and diversity due to the huge cardpool. Resricting it to standard legal sets takes away a lot from that and I'm not too sure what it could really offer in return... but who knows, the full announcement might surprise me.
I’m still not convinced that Firesong and Sunspeaker is going to only be available as a buy a box promo and is not in the set itself. My understanding of the article is that you can only get the promo card if you buy a box, which makes sense, and that the promo card won’t be in the regular set, which also makes sense. I just think there will be a lot of people who would be disappointed if the only way for them to obtain this card would be through the secondary market (not everyone is close to a WPN store or can afford to buy boxes), especially since the article stated repeatedly that these promos will be in short supply.

With Dominaria, WPN members are eligible to sell advance booster boxes in quantities equal to the number of Buy-a-Box promos they receive: 20 for Core, 40 for Advanced, 60 for Advanced Plus. The extra product is available now through your Prerelease distributor.
And that promo? You can't get it in a booster pack. It's only available at WPN locations.
Ya know? Brawl actually sounds fun. I remember experimenting with Frontier Commander and it felt/played like Commander-Lite. So it would be a great move on their part to get more people interested into commander with Brawl. It also helps drive the prices for standard cards which means the boxes might not lose their value as quickly.

As a Commander player primarily, I'm excited to get my box early, since cards are legal in Commander as of prerelease.
