I like the frames, Negate is the only art I can't stand, though some of the others are meh. Love the trash talk of Jaya on Blue Elemental Blast.
Would love to know if each foil is a 1/8th chance or if WOTC felt like being difficult.
Will need to find it around MSRP, but my completist collector self will very likely get 1, and I'll probably be interested in multiple copies looking for foils.
I like the deep blue frame a lot, and I like that the "signature spells" are reprints of good cards with new art rather than just the cards that have contained the relevant planeswalker in the past (like Jace's Ingenuity et al).
I look forward to what they might do with Liliana, Ajani and Sorin.

I'm disappointed only in the fact that the cards aren't visible when opened like the FTVs were. I've got all the FTVs on display on a shelf, and I was hoping to collect and display the spell books similarly, but with the cards sealed in a booster pack, there are no card faces to show.
My only actual irritation with the product is that it's insanely over packed. A huge box to have another box with gobs of room around it to hold a single booster pack. A pack I might add is glued to the 2nd interior box so if you're not super careful pulling the pack off, it's crazy easy to bend all your new cards.
I love the cards and I love the cool foil logo on the front. But boy howdy, there's so much wasted material here.
Now excuse me. I need to go take my old man hippy boots off.
The truth is some of us think this product under-delivers. Others have voiced they like it and that's fine. Both views are equally valid. We need to move along and let others voice their opinions.
The problem is not that "some of us think this product under-delivers". The problem is that a lot of Magic players on the internet are not capable of being satisfied by anything, and further that they attack people who can be satisfied by something.
I feel this stance undermines legitimate criticisms of a product and undermines the entire discussion in regard to that products merits. This isnt the path to go down when it comes to discussion as it invalidates anyone who doesnt agree with you.
That said this product under delivers. For me, not because of card choice but because of its mass production and mediocre art direction.

When I open a box set, I put the cards into 9 pocket pages anyway, saving the packaging separately if it's something cool, so this is a moot point for me.

I want to understand but I do not understand Could you say what you just said in a different way with other words?
How are the new cards from Spellbook different?
Let me try with images (attached).
When you remove the cover of e. g. FtV:Dragons, you see three fanned out cards.
When you remove the outer cover of SPB:Jace, you get to see the booster pack.
It's apparently space and material saving but presentation diminishing.

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.
[thread=239793][Game] Level Up - Creature[/thread]
So I returned from my trip and my local game store, which is run by a really great team of people, reserved this item for me knowing I love Jace. So I picked up 4 copies of this at MSRP (they're a very honest store). Pulled foil Mystical Tutor (! my favorite card in the set !), Gifts Ungiven, Jace Beleren and Threads of Disloyalty. I had hoped for a foil Brainstorm, but considering I don't like foils anyway and it could have been something worse, I am happy with the foils I managed to get. Especially Mystical Tutor.
I had hoped the list for this set was the following, though:
Brainstorm
Mystical Tutor
Ponder
Jace Beleren (New Art)
Counterspell
Negate
Telepathy
Threads of Disloyalty
Basically, Ponder instead of Blue Elemental Blast (Jace doesn't use elemental magic, he ponders...) and Telepathy instead of Gifts Ungiven, despite the lesser value. I also feel the Jace Beleren should have had new art. Not fair to use the Book Promo art, but I don't think the tired Lorwyn art should have been used on a product that most appeals to Vorthos.
Overall, a Jace Mystical Tutor is all I've ever wanted, so I am very pleased. I also bought a playset of them, one of which was foil, for $30. Not sure why I did this. Hype I guess. So needless to say, I have nine of them now, two foil. Yes, I have a problem
A ‘playset’ of mystical tutor? The term playset usually means 4 because 4 is the most you could have in any constructed deck - if you have a playset of something that means you have enough to put as many in a deck as you are allowed to.
But for a card that’s banned in legacy and restricted in vintage... isn’t a playset ... *one*?
yawn. hard pass. over priced and i'm not sure who the market is outside of jace fanboys.
Literally signed up just to laugh at you. The price of the cards without the foil easily breaks even, and a foil Brainstorm goes for $30 out of this set.
But, yeah, the fact that they don't pay you to take these cards means that it's a rip off. It's like when you don't pull a foil misprint planeswalker out of every pack, just absolute robbery.
On mcm the cheapest you can get the whole set is 13€ while cards individually 11,5€ (no foil included, I rounded up some cards, I used the price trend but nobody actually trades at that price so cards go for closer to their lowest price) so you really need to hit those higher value foils to break even (as in counterspell).
If I were to buy this from my flgs I would need open foil brainstorm or I just lose money. They sell these things for 19.5€ euros.

yup.
if you open one of the *****ty cads as a foil, have fun. i got one as a novelty just because i needed a mystical tutor. my foil was negate. i lost money for sure.
the cards are difficult to trade outside of the tutor because they're so readily available, cheap, or just not good. trade in values are even lower. you have to take that into account when estimating the value of these things.
its almost a good product. almost. it just needs a little bit higher value/playability. sometimes reprinting a super ridiculously available card like negate but with new art just isn't a great move.

Many products are overpackaged, MTG or not
