it's a matter of taste, my friend. I find them gorgeous. This is a niche, collector aimed product. You don't have to get it if it's not appealing to you and that's fine. Different products are designed for different crowds. I love the way they're playing with the frames and I hope they keep this trend going forward (the new FNM layout for instance is beautiful in my opinion)
This product has an MSRP of 19,99$. True, FtV also had a low MSRP and was nigh impossible to find at that price, but maybe this one will... did you consider that? I don't think 20$ are unfair for such a little but valuable collection of cards. All of them have seen play in various formats, from Modern to Legacy to Commander variants, the only Standard-legal one (Negate) is still interesting and vastly played, and almost any foil from the box is a nice addition. It's really true that if Wizard put 10$ bills in packs people would claim that they should put 20$ in it...
The problem is that while this is the "spiritual successor" to FtV, it shares almost nothing in common with it aside from both being overpriced boxed sets. FtV was (with some exceptions) full of playable (or at least interesting) cards and had the unique foiling as an excuse to feel "premium". This is 8 arbitrary blue spells that are playable (but not particularly hard to find) thrown into Photoshop for a few minutes to make new frames (which would have more impact if we hadn't had 50 new frames in the past year). And a random foil because lotteries are fun.
Compare this to your average Duel Deck, which also had an MSRP of $20, contained at least as many playable cards as this (and generally more), gave you 120 cards with 2 non-lotto foils, came with dice, and could be played right out of the box. Sure, you didn't get a spangly new card frame and Jace only appears on 90% of the cards, but I don't consider that a bad thing.
A product that costs over $2 per card better have a darn good reason for it. Gauging a product by its secondary market prices generally isn't good, since WotC allegedly isn't in the secondary market. Card-for-card this is more than 8 times more expensive than your average booster pack, isn't going to introduce any highly needed reprints into the wild, and isn't particularly interesting or thematic (as I said previously - all of these spells but one predate Jace, so saying they are his "signature spells" is laughable).
To be honest, I don't completely hate the idea of this sort of product, but the execution isn't great here. The fact that this isn't even the worst cash grab of the year so far is unsettling, to say the least, and that's what really makes me worried for the game.
Sometimes MTG players are really, really annoying. I can understand why so many game shops close one after the other, year after year...

If that is the direction they are moving to, I believe it's a good one. This product seems more useful and could have a wider market than FtVs... needless to mention that FtV-like foiling system makes the cards good looking but terrible to play with (I've got a Cataclysm and a Kess, Dissident Mage that are as curly as the Weatherlight keel..), so I also agree with the choice to have the basic set non-foiled.
Okay, you want to call players annoying, how about a company that moves like a giant slug when it comes to problem solving, always goes to the farthest extreme when doing said changes instead of easing into changes, and then sometimes rolls back a change without any idea if the change was good or bad? Everything happening with the attrition rate of the player base and the recently bad set design, the price of the game in constructed, and the horrible sealed product lines along with the state of standard is the companies fault. So if you want to go around slapping people in the face, at least acknowledge that much?
I didn't say this was a bad product. I said it would be better if the foil wasn't random, Jace was an original design that matched up with some of the included cards and was free of the limitations of standard, and the price was 10 bucks higher so they could fit more good cards into it.

It's better than the new duel deck they released. WoTC has been making okay to bad constructed products for ages and it is one of their known weak points. The challenger decks are much better constructed products than usual, so hopefully they will carry this over to other lines. Even commander is mostly above average compared to other TCGs.

Big words and technical terms don't make you look smarter if you use them in a context where they make no sense: in fact, they achieve the opposite effect. The company that MAKES the product (and in fact has the monopoly over it, in that while other TCGs exist, Magic is something only Wizards make) by definition cannot "artificially increase the amount of profit yelded": it's their product, they can put on it whatever price tag they damn well please, much like every other company in the world does with their products. Then, the customers will be given the right to "vote" on whether or not they find the product to be good and/or the price tag to be appropriate, simply by choosing to not buy it: we're not talking about water or bread here, Magic is something you can easily live without.
In turn, this means that any decision made by the company cannot be "at the expense" of the customers: "at the expense" means that the decision damages you, but how can any decision concerning Magic damage anyone? It's a game, so if you choose to pour money in it, it was your free choice, and again, not pouring money in it is also an available choice.
Thus, those who really want these cards and/or like Jace will be glad to purchase this product, and those who don't will simply choose to not buy: how do random foils damage either group? The only people who could possibly be "damaged" by this are those who are in the game not to play it but to make money off it, but frankly I find those to be laughable: you keep whining whenever they give you something that won't give you "value" on the so-called "secondary market", and you fail to see the obvious truth, that what you do with their product after they've already gotten your money is NOT the company's concern. It cannot be, it should not be, and it will never be.
Because the truth is, the only one a company wants to make big money off its product is the company itself, as has always been the case with all companies in all sectors throughout the entire history of humanity. Only the ridiculous levels of entitlement certain groups of the MtG community have reached could lead anyone to believe otherwise.
First off, you lumped me in with secondary market users. Incorrect. Then, you implied I'm an entitled member of the community. Also incorrect. Then you try to make an economic statement while completely leaving out consumer satisfaction of a good, which is also incorrect. But please, by all means, continue to tell an Econ minor how Econ works.

I believe I've already used up my quota of the words "entitlement", "you know in advance what's in the box so nobody is ripping you off", "the value of the cards on the secondary market cannot and should not be the company's concern" and "if what's in the box does not appeal to you, you're free to not buy it" for today.
Please, don't pretend to lecture me on entitlement. There is a BIG difference between that and EXPECTATIONS. I've been paying federal, state and local taxes out of my paychecks for over 30 years to the entitlement/welfare state. I know what entitlement is as my money gets redistributed to those that think they are owed something from everyone else. Spare me the condescension.
What you evidently can't comprehend is that some of us have greater expectations for these products. They can and should do better. And yes I won't settle for this product. If others want to waste their money, so be it. That isn't entitlement, its called consumer discipline. If you like it, fine, buy it. But don't go around belittling others that don't think the exact same way you do and don't tag us with the label "entitlement" when that isn't even close to the truth. You're wrong.
Can they make products like this better? Probably (but even that is debatable, as "better" is a subjective matter). But SHOULD they make products like this "better"? No, simply because the word "should" implies that this company owes you (and those who share your taste in cards) something, which it doesn't. If they WERE to make "better" products, it would probably result in more sells for them, so it certainly would be in their best interest to give it some consideration... But see, that is the crux of the issue: how do we know that they didn't? Who are we to arrogantly assume that we know anything about the decision making of this company? Perhaps after carefully considering the pros and cons of every single potential inclusion, this was the best they honestly felt they could put in this box...
... Or perhaps you people are right and this is a hastily thrown together product whose sole reason of existence is to bait Vorthos suckers into forking out 20 bucks. Either way, the fact that spoilers exist make the whole point moot: those who will buy this product will do so knowing in advance that it will satisfy them, and those who won't, well, won't, so the "hard-earned money" you speak of won't be in jeopardy, because you won't spend it. And thus, nobody will be harmed by this product...
... Which means that this whole debate is completely, utterly pointless, and yes, the sole reason why it exists in the first place is because of how entitled many people in the MtG playerbase, especially those who dabble in the "secondary market", have become. A guy a few posts above said "this company could put 10 dollars in a pack and you'd complain that it should have been 20 dollars": truer words were never spoken, as far as the MtG playerbase goes. Whether or not you personally are guilty of this is an entirely separated matter, and frankly one I care very little about: I don't even know who you are, so sorry if I don't sympathize (did I spell that right?) with the life problems you're so eager to throw around. I'm kinda busy dealing with my own, you see.
When is paying taxes a life problem? Do you not pay them? Are you entitled to not pay them or reap the benefits from others? Reevaluate your comments dearie and get back to me on it.
I can't enlighten you so we have to leave it at that. If you purposely bury your head in the sand and plug your ears to the legitimate critiques of some of us, you are the perfect customer WotC desires. Ignorant(in the true sense of the word) and sycophantic, the combo Hasbro desires the most.
I've said before you could take a dump in a pack, and foil it, charge $9.99 for it and a select few suck-ups would still call it the best thing ever. Shoe fits on the other foot as well.
SSB could and should have been better, give me an afternoon and I could have come up with a better card list. All foiled and sold for $17.99 MSRP. But keep settling for mediocrity and that is exactly what you will get. You reap what you sow.

Adding you to the ignore list.
Bury your head in the sand. Its seems what you do best. You need to look up the definition of entitlement. But you won't. Stubborn close minded people don't like to hear differing views.
I see you didn't answer my question about paying taxes or being on the receiving end of government entitlements either. Why can't you answer that? That is entitlement and the entitlement mentality, not having high (yet reasonable) expectations of materials that we PAY for.
The truth stings sometimes. The truth is some of us think this product under-delivers. Others have voiced they like it and that's fine. Both views are equally valid. We need to move along and let others voice their opinions.

I think you may be confusing "a lot" with a few of the loudest and most vociferous. If you are referring to me that I like nothing, maybe you should search through my posts and find that I have had glowing praise for Challenger Decks, UnStable and several choice reprints just recently. Don't jump to conclusions that may not be true. I give credit where credit is due but I call foul when they shove out the crap and pretend its a Faberge Egg. Just because a select few will complain about everything doesn't give creedence or validity to those other select few that want to be totally opposite and fawn and drool over anything with a Magic logo on it.
If you set the bar low and never raise it, Wizards isn't going to do it for the funsies of it.
And PS: The only "attack" was by Catherine Cook on those of us that don't fit into her narrative. I won't throw the first punch but I will respond in kind. Some of us are just voicing our opinion and not addressing anyone, that isn't an attack, that is critique. Yet again I say we need to move on and let others voice their like or dislike of this product.

Why is WOTC pushing Jace so much...? Everyone I talk to seem to hate him?
Apparently he's far and away the favourite. Something about how nerds are Blue for the most part and like Jace, see themselves as misunderstood but superior to others.
Why is WOTC pushing Jace so much...? Everyone I talk to seem to hate him?
Why does Disney push Mickey Mouse? Why does Marvel push Iron Man and Captain America? Its the "face" of the game so to speak. I think he is dull myself and won't be spending a dime on his "Spellbook". I'll check back in when its Chandra, Garruk's or Karn's turn (which is probably never). I imagine they will take it right down the line. Probably Chandra next, then Lily, then Gideon, then Nissa. They telegraph these things any more, you can probably already guess what will be coming in each.

But please, by all means, continue to tell an Econ minor how Econ works.
Many thanks to DNC at Heroes of the Plane Studios
Yep how outrageous that certain consumers want value, quality and playability out of a product they spend their hard earned money on. Who would have thought?

Peddle your falsities to someone else, I'm not buying.

No thank you. 20 bucks for 3 packs of cards and 5 lands = Hardest of hard pass. Do you mean like the old gift boxes that gave you 5 packs, a foil, 20 lands and some dividers with a nice storage box?

The problem is not that "some of us think this product under-delivers". The problem is that a lot of Magic players on the internet are not capable of being satisfied by anything, and further that they attack people who can be satisfied by something.

Apparently he's far and away the favourite. Something about how nerds are Blue for the most part and like Jace, see themselves as misunderstood but superior to others.
