1) Probably as a throwback to when expansion symbols weren't colour coded for rarity. They attempted to do that with Coldsnap (Common was white, uncommon was dark grey).
They tried to improve Homarids in Alliances (and Time Spiral) with the Viscerids (Viscerid Drone and Viscerid Deepwalker). Hopefully they go along those lines in this set.

Common symbols always have been white/black. It's just usually inverted. I think that might be a change going forward starting with A25.
