The magus is actually an upgrade on wheel. It's a 3/3 for 3 and being able to wheel at instant speed is a huge bonus because you'll have all your mana to cast your 7 cards first. It's also extra usable as a creature. Now sure it isn't a combo card anymore but magus as general card is probably far stronger than the original in my opinion. Magus Of the Memory jar is too and so would magus of the timetwister. It just depends on what effect you're talking about putting on a creature. Now the yawgmoths will is probably worse.

Haha no it's really not an upgrade on Wheel. 5 mana + needing to survive a turn is a HUGE downgrade compared to the old wheel, even with insta-speed activation possibilities.

My Commander decks:
Chandra, Torch of Defiance - Oops! All Chandras.
Prime Speaker Zegana - Draw for Power.
Pir & Toothy - Counterpalooza.
Arcades, the Strategist - Another Brick in the Wall.
Zacama, Primal Calamity - Calamity of Double Mana.
Edgar Markov - Vampires Don't Die.
Child of Alara - Dreamcrusher.
Well I guess you could say that if all you want is the wheel, but it's primarily a 3/3 for 3 which is a nice body and after you beat the he'll o it of them with it, you can trade it in at your leisure for 7 cards you get to use first with all your mana up. That's far more what a red deck wants than the original. Now yeah wheel Of fortune is strong in a few combo decks, but a typical red deck would probably rather have magus of the moon or the wheel because they want to pound on someone.

A 3/3 for 3...in EDH...yeah no, that's really not where red wants to be. Red needs the hand refill more than anything. Vomit out hand -> Wheel -> Resume vomiting hand.

It's not strictly worse than the original wheel, but it's a long way from being a better card even in EDH. Instant speed shenanigans are not worth the huge drawback of being a creature that needs to tap. It's still a good card, but the original is one of if not the best red card in the format.
I didn't mean specifically in commander. I meant if you could reprint wheel and magus in standard or something. Magus is how a typical red deck wants to play while wheel is a do nothing card That probably gives your opponent the first shot at the cards.
He's pretty great in Feldon of the Third Path EDH, can activate a copy from out of the yard at instant speed and can keep doing it. Nice to have a foil. Hope we get Magus of the Will too.
