I wish they could do something like this in black-border...
Among all of the mechanics in this set, two cards with the same name and different rules text ranks behind only manual dexterity and subgames in terms of mechanics that are least likely to see the light of day in future black border products. While I won't deny that the idea is incredibly interesting and unique, such a choice would be, in a word, a nightmare. Here's a list of some of the people such a mechanic would inconvenience/confuse/anger:
Wow. Just wow. I mean the ones that are only alternate art and/or flavor text are pretty mild, but the functionally different ones are crazy. I'm planning to build an Un-Cube, and this just made it a lot harder. Hopefully we get a full list somewhere of the various versions.
My problem is that i ordered a complete set from SCG, and I have this sinking feeling I wont get each card, only 1 of each version now... and there will be one more desired or rarer than the others. I wonder how theyre gonna handle this. I hope I get all versions (since normally if someone gets a complete set of say Fallen Empires from a store, they get all art versions as well) but I just hope they can let us people with preorders know.
They just released a statement. Sounds like you get 1 of each version if you ordered a set, but I'm not sure on the ins and outs so you might want want to check it out for yourself.
Remember the "240-ish" term for "Number of cards"? Makes a heck lot of a sense now, well?
The Secret Base was kind of expected mechanically, the rest are just...amazing.
My inner Vorthos was delighted from the first Amateur Auteur, and having three more musicals in the same vein..well, Wizards, you played it excellently.

The fact that these don't have a/b/c in the collector's number seems like it will cause a lot of problems.
If you order one version online and they send you a different one, rectifying it with third parties is going to be harder.
This seems totally doable in black-border provided it's used sparingly and with the afforementioned a/b/c additions. This would let limited commons in small sets be a bit more varied, though small sets are going away anyway...
This is an awesome solution for the killbots. They have different names and therefore are considered different cards for deckbuilding purposes (right?) without occupying multiple slots in the set. Plus the flavor of an army of identical killbots. Without tokens (which are unusable with Mary), there really is no other way to convey that.

It may be possible to do something more mild, such as having a card with the same name in a set that has only two versions of different rules text. It could make deckbuilding choices a lot more interesting in constructed formats, since you would still only be able to play four copies of that card.
Probably never going to happen, but the idea is interesting to think about.

Or they could go the different names on identical cards route to produce a relentless rats-esque effect. It would also help to enable a "legendary matters" set. Not sure which of the two is more likely to happen in black border, if either is possible at all...
This is so much fun. Look at Garbage Elemental just doing completely different things.
I hope they will consider doing art variations in the standard sets too, like they did back in the day. Especially when it improves flavour..
But guys!! Did you notice that one of the variants of Sly Spy takes a card from your opponent's library and puts it into YOUR hand!? That's a first, right?

The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
So, with this in particular, aside from the fact that this doesn't cost enough, particularly the versions that work with tokens, I like that it lets them print versions for every different bizarre deck-building constraint without printing one-off versions that are niche.

I don't care to own one, but I hope there's a version that cares about artist. This feels the best way to support that theme without printing bad cards that eat up pack space.
I love how Garbage Elemental always ends up with at least one obscure (e.g. Frenzy), overpowered-and-therefore-in-disuse (e.g. Cascade), or unimplementable (e.g. Last Strike) keyword in its rules text. I'm hoping for one out there with Dredge 30.

It's a subtheme for S.N.E.A.K.
then I definitely like the fourth version best
(the one with Misdirection and one-shot Ixidron).
