Unstable looks like a blast. Shenanigans everywhere. If only there was a casual-focused format dedicated to fun and silliness to play them in.
...
Hey, wait, we have one of those!
Until the next banned list announcement (January 15), silver-bordered cards are legal in Commander.
Yes, you heard that right. Dust off those Fruitcake Elementals and unleash the unsanity! It's time to celebrate Unstable.
The following cards are banned. They have rules that span multiple games, which is problematic for single-game multiplayer, are variants of cards already banned, or are too nightmarish for even us to contemplate:
Ashnod's Coupon
Double Cross
Double Deal
Double Dip
Double Play
Double Take
Enter the Dungeon
Magical Hacker
Mox Lotus
Once More With Feeling
R&Ds Secret Lair
Richard Garfield
Staying Power
Time Machine
You should be careful with the following cards. They work OK within the framework of Commander, so we aren't going to ban them, but are likely to give your playgroup a headache or lead to problematic games if you're not careful. Use them responsibly and remember that if you're playing cards your opponents don't enjoy playing against, they probably won't want to play with you any more:
Ach! Hans, Run!
Collector Protector
Incoming
Infernal Spawn of Infernal Spawn of Evil
Johnny, Combo Player
Mirror, Mirror
Topsy Turvy
Yet Another Aether Vortex
Personally, I recommend avoiding the Gotcha cards, as they're a fast way to lose friends, but they're not terribly broken in the wider context of silver borders, unless you use them to collude. But, if you're doing that, you've missed the point entirely.
Contraptions don't count against your 99. The correct thing to do is put one of every one of them into your contraption deck, but that's up to you. Make sure you have at least fifteen.
Finally, for all of you who are falling over themselves to play with Spike, please remember that Rule 13 exists, and she only functions under whatever rules the rest of your playgroup sets for her.
We hope people will use these cards in the spirit in which they are intended. Go, have a good time. And summon lots of squirrels. The Earl demands it.
I appreciate this notion a lot. But why only until January 15th? Now I can "legally" play a deck but have to disassemble it afterwards?
I would like to see the next ban announcement basically be "we tried the silver borders and we like them but here are the problem cards so we are banning these specific ones, oh and here are some commander specific rules concerning half numbers, oh and Spike is UB because there is a blue mana symbol on her shirt."
I'm looking forward to playing a punishing Baron Von Count deck filled with all the annoying cards. Gotcha and the Handcuffs + Farewell to Arms mini-combo. It'll be great.

I'd like to add: "Oh, and of course Urza can be your commander. Indeed he even has to be your commander!"
well this will be weird, I don't have the time or money currently to do an UnCommander, it looks like its temporary anyways (I guess its to boost UnStable).
Depending on how long this lasts it is fantastic news. I've been wanting to make so many un edh decks such as baron or phoebe maybe even X. Hype is real

How are these games allowed to be sanctioned? As I understand it, Commander is sanctioned as a Casual event, but even Casual requires legal Magic cards. Un-cards currently don't meet that distinction to my knowledge.
Does this open the door to Collector's Edition and/or proxies being allowed in tournaments?

1) A card's colour identity is its colour plus the colour of any mana symbols in the card's rules text. A card's colour identity is established before the game begins, and cannot be changed by game effects.
2) Abilities which refer to other cards owned outside the game (Wishes, Spawnsire, Research, Ring of Ma'ruf) do not function in Commander without prior agreement on their scope from the playgroup.
So first of all no its just black. Second, you cant search for anything with it. These are rules 3 & 13 from the official commander rules.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.

First of all, I'm well aware of how the rules work. It was a joking rules interpretation based off the fact that she DOES have a Blue mana symbol on her shirt. And second, it's been stated many many times by Sheldon that she can't search for anything.
Almost tempting enough to get me to play Commander just for Cheatyface.

Playing since 1994: Currently MAGS (HomeBrew),Standard & Pauper (Pioneer and Modern are degenerate trash formats)
STOP using "dude/bro" as a pejorative or insult. Grow up.
Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”
Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
I think it would be better to just make a list of acceptable cards instead of allowing all but banned silver bordered cards in EDH. I don't think the list would be that big or just leave like it was before, let the local playgroup decide case by case. I don't think this required an official stance for the EDH committee or whatever.
I think it a mess for competitive multiplayer EDH as well. I know it's supposed to be very casual, but competitive events do happen and this change doesn't seem to add much. People may start using other ban lists. Well not really that big of an issue, as each place did that anyway, but I think it would be more divisive than it is already.

To be fair, I'm not sure the Rules Council will view "competitive players of EDH moving away from their explictly non-competitive banlist" as any sort of great loss for them.
Well not really a loss for anybody after all EDH is supposed to be chill and lax and for the most part it is. It can be annoying having people following different rulings and keeping your deck fine tuned for that particular banlist if you wanna play those events and keep track of everyone's deck as well.
... does this mean I can use Crow Storm? I can use CROW STORM!

Most likely to give themselves an out if they want to get rid of the concept if it becomes too annoying.

Finally I can try out the cheese stands alone in alt win tribal
So this is going to be now.
And as for the January 15th I don't think they will end silver border is legal
I think they will just ban the silver border cards that are just too broken in edh then let the rest of the survivors be legal.

GW Sigarda enchantress | R Godo voltron
