The phrase "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" comes from the idea that before we had say, veterinarians to check it out for us, the most reliable way to tell the general health of a horse was to look for signs in its mouth. Therefore, if you were buying a horse you checked its mouth; if someone gave it to you though, don't still check it, as you are getting a free horse, bad health or not.
