The actual black-bordered version wouldn't have trample, but it would have a keyword that made spells deal their excess damage to the opponent. Such as a Lightning Bolt with Spell-Trample being used on a Llanowar Elves, only 1 damage is required for it and the remaining 2 can go to the opponent.
Soulfire Grand Master (remember when people were freaking out about how awesome THAT was gonna be?) gave damage spells lifelink, this could be black border if they wanted to in the fiture, there is that precedent
Given that Trample specifies combat damage,
a black-bordered version of this wouldn't be able to use Trample.
It does make sense we would eventually see it, though.
This set has a LOT more cards that feel like tests for black border than the previous Un-sets did.

Since they decided to not make black-bordered Future Sight-like sets anymore, it makes sense.
They have stuff like this in Elder Scrolls Legends, no problem. Magic is way too slow to adapt with their rules. "It doesn't work within the rules" - well then MAKE it work. Change the rules.
Exactly. When I teach someone to play MTG, one of the first things I tell them is that there are very precise rules that have to be followed--UNTIL a card or effect allows the breaking of the base rules. This is exactly what the game is all about--using a card or ability to break the rules. It's a very lame excuse to say that something doesn't work within the rules.

The set seems like it should have just been called Return to Future Sight with how many cards could easily show up in black border without having to change much, if anything.
Maro has said several times that he has tried to get a direct damage spell with trample, or a spell that is essentially that, into black border. Despite being intuitive in principle, attempts either end up being incredibly wordy, or they don't work within the rules at all.
Check the oracle-wording for Liquid Fire as an example in this space.
What the point of such Oracle wording? It works perfect as printed, see Pyrotechnics.
Because damage to one target can be 0 and it was implied for Liquid Fire but not for Pyrotechnics?
If you look at rulings for pyrotechnics and similar spells, you see that "Each target must be assigned at least 1 damage." This is fine for Pyrotechnics, since you choose the number of targets yourself. Liquid fire on the other hand always has two targets, the creature and its controller. This means that "divide as you choose" actually would mean "divide as you choose except you have to assign at least 1 damage to each". So the convoluted wording is there to make it possible to assign all 5 damage to either one of the targets.
For the point on targets, it does matter. If I want to cast Pyrotechnics on Ink-Treader Nephilim, I wouldn't be able to also damage the opponent because I have to only target Ink-Treader Nephilim. But if I cast Liquid Fire on Ink-Treader Nephilim, then I can target it. I could then distribute as much damage between the target creature and its controller because the creature would be the only target.
As for the trample on Super-Duper Death Ray, I'm betting that the spell fizzles for lack of a target. Although it has trample, trample is a combat damage ability. A spell, once cast, its target is chosen on casting and not resolution. So without a legal target, it fizzles before the card even begins to do anything. So it's textbox isn't even looked at or considered - even if it has trample. It's different with creatures assigning combat damage. Because if by the time the damage step of the combat phase comes, left-over damage is dealt to the player after the blocking creature is removed from combat (whether by lethal combat damage, destruction, bounce, exile, etc.) which is how the ability actually works.
