I think the interaction with Stuffy Doll from the article doesn't work -- even if you exile Stuffy Doll, it would be too late to choose a player.
You are sadly correct. You do still pick up the indestructibility and ability to tap to do damage to yourself, but there's no chosen player to damage when the triggered ability resolves.
Do-It-Yourself Seraph is like Mairisil, the Pretender in terms of awesome johnny goodness. A short list of the best things to have her gain the text of:

So, e.g., if you exiled a DIY Seraph to DIY Seraph and, say, Possessed Portal, the DIY Seraph you have will have her own text, the text of the exiled DIY Seraph, and 2 copies of the text of Possessed Portal.
Good with tokens if you choose the flavorless option!

- Blightsteel Colossus (Indestructible + Infect + Trample + insurance against dying)
- Sphinx of the Steel Wind, Akroma's Memorial, and Inkwell Leviathan also grant a LOT of abilities.
- Darksteel Forge (makes all artifacts indestructible)
- Staff of Domination (naturally) (especially when followed by Thran Dynamo, Dreamstone Hedron, or since it is unland Mox Lotus)
- Gleemax, as another way to cheat this effect out. For less broken silver nonsense, this is also a more affordable way to get the effects of Nullstone Gargoyle and Possessed Portal (and protect them, assuming you gave your Angel shroud, indestructible, or protection first).
- It is sort of funny to load her with Charge Counter cards - say, give her a Angelheart Vial, Shrine of Loyal Legions, and a Lux Cannon to build up, and combo that with stuff that auto-triggers like Clearwater Goblet, Sphinx-Bone Wand, and Altar of Shadows. Not as powerful, but this is Silver-border land so that isn't ALL That matters.
