And anyone can activate it, and make someone other htan Hangman's controller guess. If you choose a hard word like EQUINOX or something, you can probably get a lot of boosts.
The contraption design is so, so cool, but does not feel mechanically "jokey." I was worried we wouldn't see any actual joke cards of old until I saw HANGMAN. That's the stuff. It looks like we will get a premium blend of mechanically cohesive cards and silly meta joke effects. I wish hangman was an upkeep trigger though. Won't people just leave it as 1/1 and never activate it? I can't tell if I want to make faction decks, or just a set of duel decks using all the contraptions between them. Decisions decisions.
My buddies and I already decided on Making faction "Commander" decks with them, and I'm building a cube so we can draft the set. Felt like the best way to get mileage out of it!

You force your opponent to guess for Hangman. It's not a once per turn thing. You can make them guess during combat.
Oops. Read it too fast. It just says that other players have to guess so the controller doesn't just spew wrong answers. Definitely an upgrade. Definitely gonna make some joke decks.

Feel free to tell me yours!

Curious (because I have eth same idea), how are you going to do your cube?
1 of each card only gives you boosters of 9 cards, including non-basic lands.
Will you be doing 1 rare/mythic, 2 Uncommon, 3 Commons?

Not sure yet tbh, I haven't figured out the details. We usually do 9 card packs... But also we usually only draft with 4 people so it skews the numbers a bit. Idk what I'll end up doing, but I'll let you know!
I know it's sweet, I kinda want to build a Squirrel EDH deck, my meta is usually fine for these kinds of things. The card itself, without the Squirrellink seems like a legitimate card instead of the normal Un-set weirdness of past sets. I think it'll be a decent draft environment.
Am I the only one that is a bit dissapointed? I was looking forward to absurd games. This is basically normal magic, if they really wanted to they could adjust the rules and all those cards could be in black border magic.
Last time I checked Hearthstone didn't let you play hangman or have you arrange contraptions along three slots.

At first these spoilers didn't make me want to try Unstable because they felt too normal, (and the art is restricted to the art area instead of breaking the border like other Uncards.) but then Hangman made me interested. Earl of Squirrels has me sold.
Except for Hangman this is so depressingly boring
Some of the cards from the old unsets like using your shoes as counters or singing were too far out there, but had the right idea, Hangman is the perfect blend of going outside the game of magic but still being a completely manageable mechanic no matter which setting you're playing in.
SquirrelLink and Watermark usage doesn't feel like anything different, just barebones conditions to pump or dump dorks
Contraptions I'll need to see more of any feel for how it plays, too early to make an opinion there

Keep in mind there are over 200 cards yet to be spoiled.

Just can't please some people. But, you're really not supposed to be able to please everyone. That's just how it goes.

I am pleased because they feel more like magic cards and less like really bad jokes. I'm sold!
I don't think the previous un-sets did all that well. They were wacky, sure, but some of the things were too out there and detracted from playing the game. I think so far Unstable looks like it makes sure that a fun game of magic is still possible by reining in some of the crazier things.
Since this set will not be gaining sales based on standard play, it lives and dies on limited/casual. I think ensuring normalish games of magic is a smart move, and I'm really disappointed in anyone who thinks otherwise.

I don't think spawning a bunch of tokens by damaging anything at all as a keyword ability is as boring as you make it sound.
Well, squirrellink is not boring, but it feels depressingly mostly because it makes four 2/2 tokens everytime which is hard to overestimate. I have a feeling that it can warp the format like Weight Advantage did.
it's a mechanic that already exists in magic
that's boring
it's ok if you like lolsorandom meme humor, but I grew out of Adventure Time type comedy a while ago, I want to see more inventive stuff like Hangman
- Give you life equal to the greatest power among creatures you control (truly what I expected from a "dogsnail engine" in an un-set)
- Give +2/+2 to two target creatures (truly what I expected from a card called "genetic recombinator" in an un-set)
- Allow some creature fight two creatures (truly what I expected from a MYTHIC card called "bee-bee gun" in an un-set)
- Place more contraptions (truly what I expected from a MYTHIC card called "hard hat area" in an un-set)
How can this be? Why are ALL contraptions, including mythic ones so INCREDIBLY boring and soulless? They are boring and soulless even by normal set standards. They are a disgrace. They DON'T EVEN MAKE SENSE, AND THE EFFECTs SEEM TO BE CHOSEN RANDOMLY.
The fact that these things are going to occupy 45 slots, as well as the great amount of cards that will be "normal effect + assemble a contraption" (destroy creature and assemble, sacrifice artifact and assemble, when ~ enters the battlefield, assemble...) drives me mad. Please, someone tell me these monstrosities use the token slot.
Correct me if I'm wrong, since I haven't looked at this Contraption mechanic in detail, but aren't the Contraption cards just components of a larger machine that you assemble over time? If so, it would make some sense that each individual Contraption looks like boring trash by itself.
Like I said, I don't like shoe counters or pig latin either, its too unmanageable, too much effort in the joke for little payoff. Hangman and the two cards posted earlier (Six-y Beast and Richard Garfield) examples of the correct amount of manageable and gimmicky wackiness that I like, it goes beyond the game in the ways that will probably never be replicated in black border, is very simple and lots of fun.
SquirrelLink is just Living Hive but people like it x10 because it includes a meme animal this time around, I play a token EDH deck though, I've already used this same effect last weekend
Watermarks is neat, because it's something I felt they've always needed to try, but honestly its really a mechanic no different from checking creature subtypes, still glad it's added though
And like I said before, Contraptions is still a wait and see
