Somewhat off-topic, with the switch to 'Store Championship' from 'Games Day' did they skip a cycle of promos? I don't think there was a playmat/top8 promos associated with Ixalan?

I'd love for it to be, but I think we know Azor was either a man or a Vedalken - in any case, his being a Sphinx would be notable enough that it would be recorded in all of the annals of the Guildpact's signing. We actually don't know Simic's - if that was his name - race for certain either.

We only know that he was represented by human actor in the theatre play in RAV book. That is what you have in mind,IMO. But note that it all occured in oldwalker era, where a walker could disguiae oneself as he/she pleased.

Ah, excellent point. It's still a wild guess, but a peaceable and benevolent (as far as we know) walker like Azor would probably disguise himself as a Human in order to fit in on Ravnica and not alarm everyone - even if his "true" form was a Sphinx.
Or, you know, maybe sphinxes just live in Orazca and Azor has nothing to do with the Ixalan story?
Both things are possible, and I wouldn't count out either.
Of course, considering this is the only instance of a Sphinx we've seen on Ixalan to date, I'm leaning towards him being non-native. If he is in fact a walker, and considering how the Ixalan's Binding sigil looks like an inverted Azorius symbol, and considering the fact that two Ravnica-relevant walkers are present on the plane, I don't think Azor would be a huge stretch.
At the very least, I think he is the "Last Guardian" that flew off with the Immortal Sun. I'm also a fan of Sphinxes, so I'm pleased to see one that may be relevant to the block.

Oh, I agree there. It just seems odd to assume Azor is a Sphinx without any real evidence of this. This sphinx also doesn't look particularly Ravnican either. My first thought is that it's something from Amonkhet, left by Bolas (which would make him the original being who interfered with the Eternal Sun), because the turquoise stones look a lot like Lazotep, but it also looks nothing like the Amonkhet sphinxes. So I'm not really sure at this point.

The theory about Azor is interesting though, the Ixalan is a jail and the symbol that appears whenever a planeswalker tries to planeswalk looks very Azorius.
Ravnica is one of the most diverse plane´s out there and contains different breeds of dragons as well as sphinxes. Why would Azor feel like having to disguise themself as a humanoid? Who would feel weird about the Sphinx at the table? The dragon, the demon or the cyclops? Maybe the psychic vampire?

It's a planeswalker that at some point was on Ravnica - but that might not even be Azor's homeplane. I could see it more than Crucius without filligree. And sealing of a plane is exactly the kind of thing a white-blue Sphinxian planeswalker might do, right?
The ability on Spires of Orazca also fits with the Sphynx theme and could make for a hint of the philosophy of inactivity we've come to know from Azorius. I'm not convinced the image depicts a planeswalker at all, but I could see Azor over Crucius. They are not beneath a twist creature type reveal for a character that also got twist revealed as a planeswalker in the first place.
It's good to mention Bolas, because we know he is involved on some level with giving out that Thaumatic Compass. Maybe he actually has plans to reconnect to another oldwalker.

Isn't that facial hair a little familiar? Come to think of it, Al knew how to pullJace back when he first tried to planeswalk. As an aside, ever notice how Al's neck decoration looks a lot like Bolas' horns inverted?
The theory of Crucius being the "winged beast" that stole the Immortal Sun is an interesting one, though. It sounds like the Sun is an artifact, one that can bestow immortality. We've seen Sun artifacts before, as well as artifacts that can prolong life. We also know etherium hearts exist.

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

I think of all the possibilities presented thus far, this Sphinx being Azor is the most likely.
Also, is it just me or is that pattern in the ceiling the same as the Ixalan's Binding sigil?
