Pretty sure I don't like this, but someone feel free to convince me that a deal that makes large retailers better competitors against my LGS is a good thing.

Because he's the hero MTGS deserves, and the one it needs right now. So we'll global him. Because he can take it. Because he's not just our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. An expired rascal.

All the local stores out here already were doing this deal though. Big box stores aren't gaining any edge here
Local store = Wal-Mart and Target?
I have never seen a discounted pack at my Targets or Wal-Marts.
That's a non-hyperbolic statement. I've never seen a discounted pack at their stores.
Closest I've ever seen are those very occasional markdowns by Walgreens.
Retailers probably pushing Wizards. If products aren't moving fast enough at the advertised prices, those products aren't going to be on the shelves long. I'd have to imagine sales of Magic are down from their peak of a few years ago.
My LGS sells for a flat $4 a pack and his pack sales don't seem great (low turnover from what I can tell). Hopefully this forces him to compete better and actually turn over product.
My worry is that eventually the store may just crack open certain sets to chase $$$ if the supplier is helping set these price ceilings in the market (cough worldwake cough).
Is it less money for an LGS? Yes if they don't A) have that pricing model already which makes it hard to move product at wal mart etc, or B) sell to a crowd that regularly buys 4-9 packs during a visit per customer. I doubt his draft price will change and get only gets hit on people buying multiple packs between 3 and a bundle. That's a pretty niche customer I would think. I don't see many people walk up to the counter and buy 4-9 packs.
The end result should be a marginal difference to LGS bottom lines while breathing some life into big box sales. Mom and dad are probably much more willing to spend $10 on a fancy package and 3 packs then 4-5 on a single pack luster product. I'm guessing it's going to be a package deal?
Pricing on some sets can already be had far below current LGS pricing if you shop online. SCG was selling khans boosters for 2.50 USD ea just before they rotated to bleed off excess stock. That's an extra pack for the same price as this deal - just with far less standard application due to timing.
All that being said, if you can get the discount while buying in increments other than 3...I'm not for it. Puts an unfair amount of pressure on an LGS IF that's the case. Otherwise it's a small segment of the customer base.
Good. MSRP of Magic boosters is a total ripoff. There's 3 LGSs in my city and at least 1 in each of three adjacent cities. Best booster pack deal is $3 (plus 6% sales tax) on newest set. About $3.50 - $4.00 on all other Standard sets and rotated sets back to RtR. Thanks to the internet, there's no reason for them to cost more than that.
Also, this is the result of mom-&-pop internet stores (and Amazon) asphyxiating big box stores. And oh how I love watching them die. God I hate them. Good riddance Sears, JC Penny, K-Mart, and the like. The sooner you're extinct, the better. Burn in hell for a century of bankrupting brick-&-mortar, mom-&-pop shops of old. You soulless bastards.
10$ for 3 boosters seems to be the absolute get go standard , as thats what a draft is.
Or what do you pay to draft usually ?
My LGS sells every Standard-legal set for $3.25/pack and $90/box from the moment the set is released.
They will go down to $2.50/pack for some rotated stuff that's not popular (Dragon's Maze, etc).
The wal-Marts et al of my area sell at the $4 MSRP and never discount.
I usually pay 5$ (canadian, granted) for a standard legal pack and 15$ to draft.
Also, wal-mart only has few products here and they sell for roughly 6$ a pack. As for Target, well.. they closed here! And they didn't had mtg on their shelves.

Sure, if you have $10 to gamble with, go ahead and waste your money. Cracking packs has always been a crap shoot and value, nowadays, is concentrated in about 6 cards total per set.
My local LGS isn't affected by this because it went out of business.
My LGS is buy-two-get-one-half-off on almost everything in the store, so I’ve been getting three-for-$10 for a while.
I crack three packs every set (it’s only ten bucks, and I feel good for helping small business). Then a few times a year I come back and buy maybe $100 of singles (over the course of the whole year).

I picked up a couple of packs at Target a few nights ago without knowing about this sale. The sale price wasn't posted anywhere in the area where the packs are displayed, but my receipt showed the discount.
Outrageous! Back in my day boosters were $2.50! And we didn't have no stinkin' authenticity stamps, or foils of any kind! Kids these days and their The Stack, and their FNMs. We only had Two formats, and we liked it!
umm yay so walmart is now selling packs at the same price my LGS has been selling for the past 15 years? (admitadly they have gone up to $12 in recntly but that is canadian) The only good thing about this is if they decide to lower MTGO pack prices to match.
Retailers probably pushing Wizards. If products aren't moving fast enough at the advertised prices, those products aren't going to be on the shelves long. I'd have to imagine sales of Magic are down from their peak of a few years ago.
Big box stores generally lease the shelf space for products like TCGs out to third party companies you've never heard of. Target doesn't actually care if the Magic cards don't move, it would be the third-party that cares.
My local LGS and the used CD/DVD shop have done the 3/$10 deal for a while now. Most B&Ms have been past the $4 mark for a while now (Target is usually $4.19, Meijer $4.99 and Toys R US at $5.99).
I'll occasionally throw in a pack when shopping at Target, but otherwise I try to stick with the locally owned shops.

Yea, this is the case as far as I know for Target and Walmart. Anyone who has ever gone into one of these stores near launch of a new Product only to find it not there, and asked an employee will know when they say a Vendor comes in to stock the TCG/Card section. Also, I'd love it if my LGS would adopt these prices. I don't buy sealed product much anymore (and it's usually things like Duel Decks, Commander Decks, FTV which I preorder from my LGS anyways, or Drafts played at my LGS) and part of it is because of I can't afford to spend much on Magic anymore, so i'd rather not play the booster pack lottery. But, when I have bought boxes (usually splitting with people to draft) it's usually purchased online because my LGS does no discount on booster boxes unless you pre-order the box before the set launches.

On topic: I haven't seen the price drop at Target as of yet, but I haven't been there for a few days, so who knows?
