Bishop’s Soldier - decent Lifelink filler for Vamps Demystify - Legendary Flip Enchantment hate reprint! Encampment Keeper - 8 mana and you have to sac him for a mediocre combat trick!? At least as a 1/1 First Strike he is okay for limited. Glorifier of Dusk - Vampire version of that "reprinted to death angel", but costs life... Strictly Worse? Queen’s Commission - mono version of the WB version that is cheaper, but makes one less token, not bad. Raptor Companion - Raptor dance? Or smell my foot? Sheltering Light - SB for standard? Slash of Talons - I guess they had to give red Shock because White got this. Sunrise Seeker - behold the ONLY White Explore card in the set. Territorial Hammerskull - possible for a RW aggro dino deck in standard?
Air Elemental - REPRINT!!!!!!!! Cancel - REPRINT!!!!!!!! Depths of Desire - if only it cost one less mana... still might make it in standard Revel to Riches deck? Dive Down - nice quick save! Navigator’s Ruin - Mill back-up plan for aggro? Seems bad. Pirate’s Prize - more filler for Revel to Riches deck. Prosperous Pirates - Revel in Riches deck, just keep stalling with cards to also leave you Treasure tokens Sailor of Means - man with this many Treasure makers at common even limited might have to watch out for Revel in Riches decks Shore Keeper - one drop 8 mana Sac ability cycle at common? I like it a lot better than the White creature. Tempest Caller - as if all the can't be blocked and flying merfolk weren't enough, here is the "screw it, take all the combat damage to the face" card
Blight Keeper - another of the one drop cycle , maybe better than the White creature? Contract Killing - could see this in Revel in Riches limited deck, but too meh for standard. Costly Plunder - wow another awesome draw spell, maybe even in Modern black decks? Grim Captain’s Call - :confused2:....because the Tribes share so much in common? Heartless Pillage - maybe can get there, still loving all the ways they are trying to hand us Treasure tokens March of the Drowned - kinda iwsh they saved this card name for a more pushed spell, but good in limited Pirates Skittering Heartstopper - wow, limited all star?
Dual Shot - more good burn spells! Fiery Cannonade - whoa, go-go Red Pirates! Fire Shrine Keeper - okay now the White one drop in this cycle is looking better Rummaging Goblin - would haste have really been that busted on a 1/1 for 3 mana? EDIT:NVM is a reprint
Ixalli’s Keeper - last of the one drop cycle... wait a minute that costs two mana! Why you no cycle right WotC? The 8 mana effect is at least okay in limited. New Horizons - not a bad ramp effect Elaborate Firecannon - awful, just awful
Not much to say on green or red as we got most of those cards spoiled. Nothing really leaped out or was new in the multi-colored or artifacts. Art wise the Island Basics look the best out of all of them, the rest look too generic or just forced. The Mountain with the Forested cliffs over a river looks pretty good, though.
Explore seems like a tacked on mechanic for limited, not pushed at all and not much support. Treasure tokens have a fair amount of useful cards look out for weird UB stall decks in limited that suddenly slap down Revel in Riches for the win. Red got a LOT of burn might even be enough for a creature less burn deck in limited (yeah I am just as thrilled as the rest of you ).
Just gonna say, I'm more excited than I should be for the reprint.
I'm also surprised that they didn't separately spoil the cycle of one-drops that sac +8 mana for an effect. The trilobite (Shore Keeper) seems pretty good in limited.
The first thing that made me go "Hmm" is the black uncommon that encourages all-four-tribes play. Haven't seen a real "Play five color goodstuff" draft card in a while. A quadruple Raise Dead for 3, if you're recovering all four tribes.
Grim Captain's Call
Sorcery 2B
Uncommon
Return a Pirate card from your graveyard to your hand, then do the same for Vampire, Dinosaur, and Merfolk.
Old Growth Dryads, Goblin Guide like card in green is a rare I hadn't noticed.
Lol at the photobombing frog in River Heralds’ Boon
And loving the basic land art in this set.

Why do I read this as 'return 4 Changeling cards to your hand'? There's at least Crib Swap and the black removal whose name escapes me to get.
They seemed to explicitly word it so that it works with Tribal cards.
Cards that call my attention for playability reasons:
Costly Plunder - 1B, instant, sac creature or artifact, draw 2. Pretty decent card. Strictly better Altar's Reap. Bonded Horncrest - 3R, dinosaur, 5/5, can't attack or block alone. Good card. I can see this card in constructed play. However, the 4R haste, trample dinosaur is arguably better.
Cards that call my attention for other reasons:
Annointed Deacon - Just look at this art. Just look at it. This is probably one of the most badass vampire arts I've ever seen. Guy is slicing up dinosaurs like a gentlemen. Shore Keeper - I actually like this cycle a lot for limited (though I'm mad the green one costs 2), but let's just take a moment to appreciate the first ever trilobite printed in the history of magic.
Besides that, there's lot of limited fodder. Merfolk definitely got the shaft here, it is by far the weakest tribe.

Also, I know I should expect as much at this point from MTGS users, but I can't stop rolling my eyes at the "herp-a-derp this set is too weak" comments. There are many powerful cards in this set, not least of which are the flip lands. Plus, the tribes look fun as hell to play. Remember fun? The point of playing a game??
Did they reveal if there was 1 DFC in every pack or have them appear as regular rares, since there's only 10 of them and all rares. The later seems much more likely but one can hope...

Yeah, Maro blogatogged on Tuesday that they will appear in the regular rare slot. You won't get a two-rare pack unless you pull a rare foil.
(I don't think anyone dreamed 1-in-every-pack, but some were hoping it would be like the SOI rareflips and sometimes replace a common).
This does make it appear that the mythic ratio is closer to 1 in 9 rather than 1 in 8 this set, though.

Sadly it was confirmed that they are shuffled in the indicated rarity slot.
Grim Captain's Call wins the award for "Card Most Likely to Never, Ever Get a Reprint".
Should have been a Choose a Creature type effect.
I think this is the BG 'draft milepost' uncommon. All the colors that actually share a tribe got a gold uncommon that is either a creature of that tribe or a sorcery creating tokens in that tribe. BG doesn't actually share a tribe... but a BG deck DOES see cards in all four tribes. THis card would be ideal in a BG draft where you're taking G dinos and merfolk and B vampires and pirates.
Pounce is the only card that really pinged my radar, mostly so that mono-green EDH decks that want to fight a lot can now run Pit Fight (i.e., run an instant speed fight effect). Mind you, still not sure that's great especially since I think most fight decks are either Bearpuncher.dec or Dino.dec (and will thus have access to red), but it is nice to get a clean, reprintable, instant-speed Prey Upon.
Usually there is one or two cards that might be playable in Standard in the final day of spoilers, but because we got so much of this set up front that didn't happen here. Set still looks great overall.
Pros:
- Great Art and Flavor
- All the double-faced cards look like a blast to play, and some may be quite powerful in competitive decks
- Several desirable reprints; always good for standard to get Lightning Strike and Duress back and Opt in modern is intriguing.
- Dinosaurs will be Standard playable. They also might be fun in EDH.
- So. Many. Powerful. Vampires. This might also be a real deck despite there being only two other Vamps in Standard. I would also be curious if Vamps are a possible Modern deck now given the sheer amount of powerful one and two-drops they now have.
Cons:
- MaRo says that "sometimes a dish needs many ingredients", but Explore and Vehicles really don't feel like they add anything to the set considering their weak power level. I was expecting a lot more given their high profile. I think Explore could easily be non-keyworded and appear on two or three dudes and Vehicles could just not be in the set and it would be better for it.
- They played it really safe on the Fish. The Merfolk feel like they barely have a draft identity.

Fiery Cannonade looks like it has potential. In Limited it can deal with pesky 1/1 vampire tokens and in Standard it can really mess up the current builds of Ramunap Red.
I haven't gone through the entire list yet--still missing things like Firecannon Blast--6 damage for only 3 mana, albeit at sorcery speed in your second main phase? That is still pretty darned good.

Honestly, they don't look so fun. Pirate, probably and maybe even vampire. But merfolks and dinosaurs looks so boring. Merfolks don't have an identity and have only 20 cards. Dinosurs are mostly just a bunch of french vanillas, is playing french vanillas so fun?
Every single dang time the full set gets revealed.
And yet it still happens when the commons and uncommons were more focused on this time.
The begining everyone is like "this set is a amazing" full reveal later "I hate this set."
The dinosaurs got a real powerhouse and got more than enough to make dinosaur tribal for edh.

Aww, all your pirates and vamps die... and my dinos get bigger.
48 if you include the older cards become dinosaur
I think that's a legit number to make dinosaur tribal.
Should be close to like 16-22 more Dino's in "rivals of ixalan."
Why is trilobite a creature type now?
Oh, hey, a Ghoulcaller's Chant for pirates.
...And Crushing Vines for enchantments.
I kinda want to put Elaborate Firecannon in Mairsil, the Pretender just for the sheer silliness of giving Mairsil an armcannon.
Prying Blade. For when your opponent has treasure inside him, and you've just got to get it out.
Overall, not enough raptors. Never enough raptors.
