If we see a more aggressive blue deck (possible with Siren, Jace, and Pirates in general backed by instants like Unsummon and Opt), this could see Standard play, but given that Negate has fallen to random 1-ofs or sideboard space and the most threatening non-creature spells are rotating or banned, I don't foresee this doing a ton in Standard.
Great reprint for folks looking to pick up new copies for Modern, Cube, Tiny Leaders, and other older formats though!

The pendulum is definitely swinging back towards Control with this set. No more turn 2 Heart of Kiran for you, Mardu Vehicles decks, and no more turn 1 Attune With Aether for you energy decks on the draw.
Not pleased about this reprint, but at least creatures are strong enough now that it likely won't be any kind of problem. Always mystifies me that Wizards still tries to make blue the "Stop having fun guys!" color again from time to time.
For those underwhelmed with this in standard, consider: "Raid" is coming back. Opponent tries to use kill spell to destroy your blocking creature so his attacking creature won't die in combat, you slap this down and he now has to use the 2 mana he was saving for a Raid creature in his hand (to cast post combat) or lose his current creature in combat.
So this is a common but lightning strike got booted up to uncommon? What a load.
This difference is almost certainly due to Limited. Given that Limited decks tend to have 5-8 noncreature spells and therefore 14-18 creatures, Lightning Strike has more targets. You would expect that something of a similar power level and able to hit more targets would have a higher rarity, no?
(That's the actual 'Limited' argument. WotC considers not only card power in a vacuum but also in the Limited format, which the above highlights.)
For anyone hoping to pick up an Invocation of this card anytime soon, the price of these seem to be trending upwards with the announcement of this reprint for Standard.
I'm just glad we are finally getting good reprints at common and uncommon. Technically, even the lands in this set are good reprints as the check lands are one of the better land options one can pick in modern, especially for painless mana. Also, frontier just got a bunch of stuff it needed as well.

Control players? I always thought Spell Pierce was more of a tempo spell than a control spell?
