I think winding constrictor opens up the potential for an energy sultai build. Mana is atrocious but you have attune AND aether hub. Mana base like 4 hub, 4 botanical sanctum, 4 blooming marsh, 4 [c2drowmws catacomb[/c], 6-8 basics looks quite stable for 3 colors.
metallic mimic is good for up a mono color or dual color build and plays well with the theme. Less so with sultai energy because you want the energy dudes in there as well.
The tribe may have enough by itself to do its thing in standard. The question is what is all this hexproof setting up for. UG decks will have hydra, nissa churning cards, counterspells, and eventually a 4 drop curve topper that makes everything
I'm hoping the tribe gets some standard traction for sure.
With the seeming +1/+1 counter synergy thing they have going on for merfolk here, I think this needed to be "~ enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it if you control an Island or another Merfolk". THEN it could have been Winding Constrictor's BFF, and it would be helped by the likes of Herald of Secret Streams.

That and now with 2 hate cards in Solemnity and Tocatli Honor Guard that impact counter generation, Merfolk are going to need to be good without the +1/+1 counter synergy to really win the war. Verdurous Gearhulk just got hated into oblivion now.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!

Still, is a deck running Winding constrictor even going to look at this as a one-drop rather than, say, Narnam Renegade?

gets +1/+1 if you control an island
gets +1/+1 if you control a merfolk
Is that right when there is an "or" in the text
so it can be a 3/3 right?
Still good.
