Haven't seen any chatter on this, so figured it may have slipped under the general radar. Don't think there have been any official announcements on it either (could be wrong) but it's definitely been put up on their protour schedule for future events.
Do we feel good about this? I'm kinda stoked. Modern is my favourite format to watch and it's great to see players we know and follow actually jamming a format like Modern.
After the drama when theu removed it from the protour, its reintroduction seems to have been met with a collective "pffbbtthbthtbth" sort of sound. This surprises me a little?
(apologies for lack of a link. I'm on my phone and can't find the OG source. If someone would be so kind as to link their schedule/format page from the mothership I'm sure I can paste it in or a friendly mod can).
Whatever they do, don't make EDH a tournament format...
Oh man, that would actually be awesome. Not as a regular thing of course, but a spicy one-off oh my God it would be amazing! I'd be all over that coverage
Team event where the games are actually multiplayer, with all our favourite figureheads of magic duking it out together? Don't tell me you wouldn't love to see that as a special one-of-a-kind protour event?

Nope. They would literally all run B/x so they could have a stupid amount of tutors and an easy kill card like Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon
W may only be paid with white mana. U may only be paid with blue mana. B may only be paid with black mana. R may only be paid with red mana. G may only be paid with green mana. C may only be paid with colorless mana. 1 may be paid with white, blue, black, red, green, or clolorless mana.

Well, mostly the kill would be Ad Nauseam with either Oloro or Maralen as the Commander, but yes.
Happy to see Modern back on the Tour though, it's a fantastic format.

The "Crazy One", playing casual magic and occasionally dipping his toes into regular play since 1994.
Currently focusing on Pre-Modern (Mono-Black Discard Control) and Modern (Azorious Control, Temur Rhinos).
Find me at the Wizard's Tower in Ottawa every second Saturday afternoons.
All this back and forth. I like watching the pros play Modern, but it was cut because they often broke the format in half and because it made WotC do shakeup bans to keep it interesting. What has changed since then?
If I recall correctly, the reason Wizards cut Modern from the Pro Tour was that they admitted indirectly that they made bans in order to shake up the Modern tournament scene for the following tour season, as Modern generally had its top tier decks showing up repeatedly. They felt it was not good media coverage to show the same decks in the finals every season. Wizards banned Splinter Twin that started that trend.
If they are bringing Modern back, Wizards would face the same problems again.
I don't want to have an objection, but I do. I just wish they would hire someone who actually plays Modern to make ban choices for the format, not armchair experts. It's really bad when 'your favorite format is getting more coverage!' sounds an awful lot like 'we need new decks for the extra coverage, watch us ban things until it isn't your favorite format!'
well hopefully they have learned. the win-win would be for them to be printing new cards that will impact the format, like Push. I will gladly play cards from the newest set in Modern, assuming there are any good cards and it's not just piles and piles of draft scraps.

There are people talking about it, in the Modern forums there were at least, we just have some over zealous moderators running around locking the threads and telling people to talk about the new modern PT in a thread with no title indicating the recent changes. You see, making new threads with relevant titles is getting in the way of snagging all of the modern staples off the market before the general public becomes aware
Ah of course. Probably shouldn't be selling my Mox opals at bargain basement prices then haha.
I hadn't actually thought of the market implications. I guess I'm a fan of the game first and foremost, and don't really seek to make money off it. If it's a self-sustaining hobby that's positive enough for me.

It feels like they said no more modern in the pro tour a couple of weeks ago. But I feel like they wanted their original decision but reverted it after kickback from players.
Maybe WOTC should stop making obviously bad decisions in the first place and hear what players actually want the first time around. Then they wouldn't have to flip flop constantly. How many flip flops have they had in the past year?

Sure, they say they won't do shake-up bans for the format anymore, but looking at the flip-flop record, I'm not particularly confident in the statement.
Sure, they have Play Design now, but I would honestly wait to see if it works out for the format before granting it PT status again. It's good to be positive, but if it doesn't work out, they routed themselves in a dead end back to either revoking the format from the PT again or revoking the "shake-up ban" statement, both of which are flip-flops. I may be cautious, but considering Play Design does have a troubled Standard to pay attention to, I don't think my worries are completely unfounded.
Also I've been saying we've managed to somewhat calm the turbulent secondary market thanks to both lesser marketing (which the PT is part of) and more reprints, so the sound of more marketing does not sound good to me (especially when I established it usually comes with less reprints, which from a business POV makes sense for a format they don't actually have the heart to support).

Neither of those are close to being top tier commander decks. Maralen in particular is an utter joke. Stuff like Food Chain Tasri, Thraios/Tymna FlashHulk, Tana/Tymna BloodPod, Zur Doomsday, Chain Veil Teferi and so on are vastly superior.

Combos, yes, though not infinite combos. Watch out for all decks being Doomsday or Hermit Druid.
The main reasoning behind this I believe has nothing to do with Modern ultimately. WotC has realized that having 4 standard pro tours a year is a large part of why standard has been sucking lately. It's too much high level development on the format and it gets solved too quickly. Standard is the primary money-maker for WotC so fixing standard is their highest priority. By taking the focus off standard for half the year now they are trying to slow things down which will hopefully revert some of the damage done since the modern and block pro tours went away. These were just the obvious choices as legacy isn't sustainable as a solo pro tour and limited only pro tours aren't that interesting to watch.

Means it's 3 vs 3.
It's actually great and i love team trio formats. It's so much fun to watch.
I also kind of prefer Trio United because it breathes creativity in deck choices. Makes for a fun format to watch.
