I really like how well Mesoamerican and "Land of Lost" does blend together.
Me too- it reminds me of Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire.
I know I'm very much dating myself with that statement.
Well, Land of the Lost is also in the "dating yourself". It's groovy, maybe even far out. (Why don't we have a disco ball emoji? We have a pager, and that's at least as dead as disco.)
I think the "Mesozoic jungle" theme dates at least as far back as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, or if you're an American, Edgar Rice Burroughs' Pellucidar. If your knowledge of classic science fiction and fantasy is more limited, Turok. If it's limited to "Big N" producers of various media, where N is a natural number less than ten, the Savage Land in Marvel comics. If it's even more limited...well, I don't think it can be more limited than that.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
Considering this is an archipelago world, from what I've heard (Pirates and all that), you'd think some of the art for the islands would depict actual islands and not just...beaches and stuff. I miss those old Alpha-7th edition lands.

Well, forests also don't usually depict the whole forest from above but a part of it. Many of the basic lands arts with full islands on them feel stiff and stilted, imo. The islands also tend to look small because the water around them acts as a second frame on an already small picture. And because the Island itself is so small, the artist has to sacrifice detail, which in turn makes the pictures weirdly bland and empty. Notable exceptions to this are Jon Avon's Unhinged Island, his Zendikar Island, Donato Giancola's Urzas Saga Islands and Peter Mohrbacher's Island from M12 and some other core sets. While a full Island here and there can't hurt, it's understandable why depicting a part of its shore seems to be the way to go in most cases.
(Nerd rant over. I've been obsessing over basic land art for way too long now...)
The land reveal for every new set bugs me because the damn lands should always be full art. Getting a card that showcases the cool art should not be a "treat." It should be standard.

On phasing:
Loose lips sink ships. And Ixalan is pretty much sunk, given the number of card leaks.
