gatewatch arts are pretty cool, but bolas looks weird to me. like...his hands don't look right. and his face doesn't look right. maybe it's just a weird perspective?
I must be looking at the price differently than most. $30 for a foil planeswalker... that's about right for a good one.... these aren't necessarily he good playable ones but they are super exclusives..... seems about right.
7 or 8 boosters or one of these.
Now I wish the invocations were designed to be this, and called Prophecies instead. And the flavor will be the prophecies of Amonkhet written on walls.
Yeah. Looking at these arts, it just makes the Invocations' art and design choices poorer. These felt Egyptian AND like Magic cards. It would be really nice if all invocations were Hieroglyphs from the same painting. Oh well [2].
I wish the poster art was for Bolas' Planeswalker card, I would chase that to the ends of the earth. As is, these are wonderful pieces of art (especially in the full panorama) but not cards that I care to open my wallet that wide for.
Hard pass on these, prefer the pack version of Torch of Defiance by far, will just get that in foil.

The "Crazy One", playing casual magic and occasionally dipping his toes into regular play since 1994.
Currently focusing on Pre-Modern (Mono-Black Discard Control) and Modern (Azorious Control, Temur Rhinos).
Find me at the Wizard's Tower in Ottawa every second Saturday afternoons.
I like the image much much more as a mural the way it was designed. It does not translate well to the cards at all. Full art style with a different design should've been used here and the mural should've been the additional poster that you get. Silly choices here Wizards - but that's about par for the course
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.
Poor Amonkhet. I guess this is Bolas's Amonkhet version of the Talon Gates Hieroglyphic propaganda. No one attacking Bolas after this without paying 2.

They were $20 per card last year (and, I believe, all years before). What justifies a 50% price increase?
The Panorama is Amazing.
Let's microanalyz the picture.
Jace _ Large glyph Doing magic at Bolas symbol,
Dragon in small cartouche magic backfiring on Jace or just being blown away mentally.
Two people in foreground covering ears and eyes respectively mind broken
Liliana - Large glyph Posing Acknowledgement?? Crowned by Gold Bolas symbol.
Dragon in small cartouche on throne Liliana leading undead?
Three obedient anointed zombie/mummies in foreground
Nissa - Large glyph stoic with sand pouring through in seven? points
Small Bolas symbol over the city and above her.
Foreground has something being buried by sand.
Chandra - Large glyph looking defiantly or turning away giving the hand or shielding
doing this to a small demon? wurm/dragonish figure Doesn't look like Bolas?
Three or four? ciizens 3 with torches looking riled up one maybe? starting to turn to Bolas?
Gideon - Large glyph in fighting pose Large crack going from right shoulder to midsection
Bolas himself still carving what's in front no small cartouches
Two people bowing?begging?praying? to Bolas
Well, if enough people gush over the mural, we'll get an opportunity to pick up a Limited Edition $180 HOU Mural at GenCon , so here's hoping.
I do like this better than the NB scroll. I'm not dissing that piece; I just like this a lot better. That thing is just a bit too much of a departure, style-wise. It feels like some random, high-quality fan art or something.
Calling them Prophecies would have made too much sense I guess. If that name was a problem, hardly anyone remembers the expansion anyway.
The Bolas print looks awesome, and I wish WotC would just drop the stupid ass style guides and let the artists loose a bit so we can have nice things like that again. I like the style of the promos too. Reminds me of Ascension which is a great game.
As for the mural:
Jace is going to get shot by the M:tG police after robbing a liquor store and assaulting the police with a psychic attack but he a good boy din' do nuffin.
Liliana is going to be a Slave of Bolas because that is very original.
Nissa is going to be cellmates with Emrakul.
Chandra is going to be sick of being a discount Jaya Ballard, and go off and make a new group of friends because these other guys are total boring dorks.
Gideon is going to get the Leshrac treatment, and we'll finally be rid of him for a set or two before he makes his triumphant return because M:tG story makes comic books look like Tolstoy.
People need to really nut up and even if you like the art (I personally do not) refuse to buy these at that stupid price.
You just enable them when they can vomit up a child's drawing (I know it's not) and rake in undeserved cash for it because it's comic con.
Boooo. Let em sit and next year the price will be better and so will the art.
I wish we'd have seen some art like this in Amonkhet packs. Fantasy realism, fantasy realism, dull dull dull. The Bolas looks awful, but I like the others. The poster would have obviously been superior art, but they stopped putting art that cool on cards after like... Mirage block.
The idea that this would be worth that kind of money is just stupid, but I think these cards are too expensive even in their pack forms to be worthwhile, so I wasn't ever their target.
I'm really sad to see so many people dislike the art. That's going to discourage them from further experimentation.
I guess people really are so boring that they prefer yet another 3D rendered ripped bod to an interesting stylistic choice. It's like when you think Street Fighter is a cool game, until you realize everyone just plays Ryu, Ken, and stupid Akuma. No imagination.
Edit: Yeah, I admit my comment was inflammatory. Everyone has the right not to like any art. I personally would have loved to see the hieroglyphic style used on magic cards (invocations perhaps), but that's clearly polarizing: some really like it, and some hate it.

Just because something is different, doesn't mean it's good.
The overall mural looks good, IMO. But it looks terrible when divided into individual cards.

I love the art. I had planned on foiling out a Free Win Red deck in Modern and this Chandra will definitely be the foil version I get. I also will pick up Liliana for an EDH deck and possibly Gideon for a Modern deck.
However, I too feel that $180 is pretty high. My guess is that since the previous SDCC sets never sold for under $200 on eBay and other secondary markets so it became a situation where you had to be there (or manage to snipe them on their website) to even have a chance at getting them for the MSRP. Most likely Wizards saw this and decided to raise the price to meet the demand. Ultimately, it sucks for those that were able to get the cards right away, but it makes no real difference to anyone buying these second hand.

Or maybe it just sucks? For context, I love my Time Warps, my mirrage boomerangs, my bitterblossom.
I also think the actual Chandra card is striking.
This has nothing to with imagination, but your elitist and comical opinion has been stated.
I still think these look terrible but again, just an opinion.

for me it isn't the style. i like that part of it. its the execution. it works as a full mural pic, but scaled down and divided up everything about it is awkward

If people stop buying, thats when you ask questions, otherwise you keep making it more expensive.
