People were confused because it says "repeat the process", thinking that means to automatically do it once.With this thinking, x=0 would mean you do the action once.

That's correct, the initial rulings for new cards in Gatherer come from the Release Notes.

Crap, they clarified that imminent doom locks the damage it deals at the time it triggers, so responding to a spell with another doesn't incrementally deals more damage. (i.e. casting multiple shock in response to each other has imminent doom deal 1 damage each time, not 1, 2, 3 ...) There goes its potential for modern down the drain.
