Solid Sphinx for my take on mono-U Sphinx tribal. It's centered around discarding, or not drawing I suppose, so having a way to shrink attackers after swinging is excellent.
This is what I was looking for, and a really solid card to boot. I can't wait to crack packs, honestly.
Well, this is a limited bomb. A 4/4 flyer for 5 is very playable, and adding cycling support makes this insane.
I was thinkig that Amonkhet should have had uncommon and maybe even common sphinxes like Tarkir for dragons and Innistrad for angels/demoms. It kind of bothered me that Amonkhet had angels at common and uncommon but not sphinxes, when sphinxes should have been the priority in an Egyptian set.
Anyway, I'm just glad to see an uncommon sphinx. And a great uncommon for limited, unless you're playing against it.
At the very least, with sufficient discard outlets (including cycling) this will chump any creature less than 5/x (and that is if you discard only one card). If I open two of these in Sealed I might actually be tempted to try some form of a blue deck, depending upon what else I open. On the other hand, even without discard this creature followed by a Cartouche of Knowledge or Cartouche of Ambition on the following turn should be an easy win.
Flavor text of this basically says "We sphinxes waited until things started to happen to tell you the apocalypse was going down and then we only whispered it." Sphinxes are a**holes.
Part of me wishes that Sphinxs shouldn't have square stats. I think that should be their distinction.
An interesting concept. I'm fairly certain that they are the iconic race with the most uneven stats, even so. Least is likely Hydras given their X = +1/+1 counter schtick, then Angels and Dragons. Demons I know have gotten a few non-square stat lines.
