You would be correct in assuming that I did not play Standard/Modern/Legacy during THS/RTR blocks. I mostly play EDH/Commander and casual and LIMITED. While I can't speak for how cypher did during GTC limited, as I went through a lull period, I can tell you that Tribute was a played mechanic in THS block limited.
What really bugs me, and you are welcome to your opinions, is that people often post and say that "this card is overcosted" or "it doesn't do enough" and they don't stop to think for a moment WHY it's "overcosted" or "underwhelming." Other than a few exceptions with last minute changes (most recently the change for Emmara Tandris/Voice of Resurgence) that R&D has costed it something for a reason. They've tested it and tested it and tested it and determined that it should cost what it does. (And don't confuse this with the SNAFU that happened with CopyCat, because that was a different thing entirely.)
While I have a reserved opinion about it, my friend once stated that "there are no bad cards. Every card has a use." And for the most part I agree with him. Yes, if your goal is to be the best Spike you can be and winwinwinwinWINWINWINWINWIN!!!!!!!!!!!! Then yes, these may not make it into your deck. But as someone who plays casually (statistically the MOST played "format") and EDH (mostly casually) I enjoy using cards that don't normally see play in constructed/competitive. Not every game has to be a race to the finish. Can't we just take a joyride now and again?
