Not that familiar with Standard, is there a way to tap a land for more than one mana currently? Or some other kind of interaction that makes paying 1 mana to untap a land worthwhile?
Wonder if someone's going to make an Exert/Paradox Engine deck. These activated abilities seem pretty good to abuse.
I've been playtesting with Glory-Bound Initiate, Devoted Crop-Mate and Always Watching in a humans matter sort of thingy... it's good but even it gets run over by Temur Energy. Asking that deck to run mana dorks and a 5cc engine for questionable payoffs is a stretch.
The best Pardox Engine option I can see right now is Temur with Mad Prophet or some other loot on a stick, dorks and the ability to eventually deploy a giant Walking Ballista and kill all at once. None of these help with that goal, not even the mediocre dork because he's outclassed by so many of the G/UG dorks currently available.
It seems that the cycle is designed to be 'reasonable creature for cost' (W and G ones are bears) with an exert ability tacked on. Dunno if they're going to tear up in Constructed--I doubt it--but they seem perfectly reasonable otherwise.

It'd be for the non-attacking Exert creatures, which are actually quite powerful if you can reliably untap them. I'm sure they'll be spoiling some of the stronger, higher rarity ones shortly, too. All we need is one that can draw cards for an exertion cost and POSSIBLY a small additional mana cost, and it may be possible to go infinite.
Maybe. But it goes infinite as early as turn three if you play Intruder Alarm. I like.
I don't think this ability has been stapled on a two drop before? The closest thing is Thraben Doomsayer, a 3 drop. Turn 3 infinite dudes in Modern, but they can't swing until turn 4.

Yeah, that's why I was talking about Mad Prophet because right now it's the closest we get... I don't think it can win before T5 right now, and generally only with about 33% then. So probably needs to run Haze of Pollen with the intention of using that to buy some time.
There's a series of plays that gets you there on T4 I guess, but it seems dodgy:
T1 land go
T2 land Dork go
T3 Land new Exert Dork
T4 Land, engine, anticipate, untap D1 and D2, 1 mana spell (doesn't really matter what but not cycling), untap dorks, Mad Prophet, untap dorks, activate prophet, get cards, loop... I think New Perspectives is just better as at right now and that isn't that good against the current standard.
Okay, updated the OP properly with all five cards now that I'm back on deck. Thanks to the mods and Caranthir for holding the fort in this thread after I had to bail... was that five spoilt cards across something like eight hours in the end? Yeesh, slowest roll ever.
@Mods: I changed the thread title to reflect the fact that it's not a true cycle of cards (just five dudes that deal with exert). I hope that doesn't break the links in the HoD Spoiler.
Yeah, that might actually be a WU Modern deck. It's faster than Midnight Guard + Splinter Twin, and runs blue for draw and counter.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Why the need for the tap symbol on these, it just makes it confusing when u exert, since by exerting you are on declaring attacks and by attacking you are going to tap.

Exerting doesn't have anything to do with attacking directly, you only think it does because all the creatures that had exert in Amonkhet tied choosing whether or not to exert to being declared as attackers, but the Exert ability just means "this won't untap on your next untap step". You actually can't exert these creatures as you declare them as attackers ordinarily, because their exert abilities also have tapping as a cost and you can't pay for two different costs with the same action (tapping them to attack means you can't also tap them to use their ability). They are worded the way they are to make exert an actual downside (without tying exert to an action that also taps the creature, it would effectively do nothing), and so you can activate their abilities without attacking.
You still can attack and also exert these in the same turn, but you need vigilance or an untap effect to accomplish that.

They are pretty terrible in constructed (mainly as the effects could just be without exert and it would make them hardly crazy).
