I'm really not excited about paying 6 mana for this to make my other 5-8 mana Sphinxes cost 2 less. If I'm playing this even in EDH and I'm trying to make Sphinx tribal it means I'm having to wait until I can ramp up mana for this for the rest of the deck to even be worth playing. As far as I'm concerned this is HOU's Chaos Imps. Not looking forward to opening these.

The cost reduction can help you play multiple sphinxes in a turn.
And, you know... a ton of card advantage from the ability you're ignoring.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
Exactly what I came in here to say. It works too beautifully with Sharuum the Hegemon to not have both in the deck.
But you want to fall into Sharuum with Unesh's effect, so who's the commander? (HINT: There isn't another one)
Sadly, Unesh is probably too recent to make it into Iconic Masters. Now I want to see tribal legends for Angels, Demons, Dragons, and Hydras too. Yeah, Angels, Demons, and Dragons do have options, but we have no monocolor options, and believe it or not, that's important because not everybody wants to play a RWB Angel deck, sometimes just monowhite Angels are good enough. Likewise, not everyone demands a WUB Sphinx deck, some people will be happy with a monoblue Sphinx deck. And Unesh should play well enough in WU and Esper Sphinx decks anyway. Sharuum's deck wants to be more artifact focused, but there are a decent number of artifact Sphinxes to tie the theme together. Isperia and Medomai certainly won't mind having Unesh in there.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

True, not to mention that everyone wants to play Jund Dragons (with thanks to Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund and Bladewing the Risen... at least when they're not going for all five with Scion, anyway).
Well now, see, it's good to give players options. It's nice to be able to play WUBRG Dragons if you so please, but what if you just want to play monored Dragons? Rorix Bladewing and Tarox Bladewing are your best options. Well, that aren't on the Reserved List anyway. Let's have the Unesh of Dragons. And Angels, Demons, and Hydras.

In case you didn't understand what they're trying to tell you, this "goat head thingy" is on point for the Egyptian theme of the plane, so there's no real reason to complain about it.

What is there not to understand? There was a guy who pointed this out before I even made my post. I wasn't complaining, just saying I would have wanted a sphinx lord that would look like/resemble the actual sphinx.
This has actually quickly become my favorite Commander, and it was a hilariously inexpensive deck to make.
I think I paid, maybe, a total of $100 bucks on SCG for all of the cards I really needed.
Sure, it's a fairly easy deck to stop, in terms of countering/killing an early Unesh, but if it sticks?
I built the deck with heavy counter support because, quite honestly, it's a big dumb flying tribe and it dies to boardwipes, so of course you run heavy counter support.
Once you land an Urza's Incubator, most of your Sphinx besides the really expensive ones cost UU.
After that, it's pretty much just about playing 1-2 Sphinx's per turn while digging for more Sphinx's and more counters, until you hit Nyxthos, Shrine to Nyx and proceed to dump your hand every turn.
It's shockingly consistent when tested, and while yeah, it's not going to compete against a Tier 1 deck, my local meta is not filled with complete try hards, so I think it's in a good spot.

That currently seems to also account for non-creature Changling spells.
This aint your girlfriends meta! This is a man's meta! TURBO META.
