I really hope we get 3 large sets for this block and they go ham on the creature types and everything. Fingers crossed for a legendary Kavu and tribal support!
Words cannot describe the hype I feel for Dominaria. I was almost sure they were doing a "classical high fantasy world" to break up from all the Steampunk, Egyptian, Dinosaur-riding Pirate craze they were doing, but I was 99% sure it was going to be Shandalar. But just straight up Dominaria? Holy balls!
Obviously, this is just speculation, but I think we might see Dominaria as the classic "High fantasy-ish" plane. Think back to ABUR and Legends (In my mind, the original large sets that defined what Dominaria was). It was warriors and knights, wizards shooting each other with bursts of fire and lightning, dragons and other fearsome beasts, goblins and elves, and a whole cadre of legendary places and characters that fit standard tropes.
While I don't think it will necessarily be Arthurian, I think it will be high-ish fantasy, which is where magic sort of started in the first place.
EDIT: I wouldn't get my hopes up about a "no-gimmick" set. This set is going to have "gimmicks" if by "gimmicks" you mean new mechanics and certain themes/feelings to differentiate it from other standard sets (I guess that's what we call them now that there aren't any "large" sets?).
If you want a new set without "gimmicks" then good news: The core set is coming back!
Core Sets in the past have featured mechanics like Bloodthirst and Exalted, but maybe that will have changed with the new Core Sets.
I think it'd be cool if Dominaria brought back mechanics from past Dominaria sets and blocks, my top picks being Cycling, Kicker, Flashback, and Morph, though I'm aware that Cycling just came back in Amonkhet and Morph wasn't that long ago in KTK. Kicker has been out of action the longest, though they may be hesitant to bring it back because of the Kicker problem (the attitude that any new additional or alternate cost is just Kicker by a different name). Flashback would be fun to see again, I don't believe we've seen it since Innistrad block.
I expect we'll see Kavu and Slivers again, it's been ages since Slivers played a story role and fans have asked to see Kavu again. Hopefully we'll also get to see more Dwarves and Orcs. Additionally, we'll probably get Legends galore, including plenty of throwbacks. Hopefully we'll finally see Karn again. I would love if he got a side story to show us that, during every block since Scars of Mirrodin, he has been traveling to different planes and cleaning up the Phyrexian oil before it becomes a problem, perhaps during the events of blocks set on those planes. Alara and Kaladesh would be two interesting close calls, since we know what damage Phyrexia can do on a world that already makes heavy use of artifice.
Overall, I think we'll get a sort of condensed Dominaria that combines the signature attributes of a lot of its blocks. That might mean the flavor of different regions is simplified some for the sake of a 269-card set (much like how Origins used the color pairs as windows into the ten planes it represented).

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Awesome. This is a return I wanted badly. I hope this is one of those planes we stay on for 2 sets for the whole story purpose Maro had stated. This plane, not to mention new players, deserves the 2 set treatment after the 10+ years of being ignored.
I really hope we get 3 large sets for this block and they go ham on the creature types and everything. Fingers crossed for a legendary Kavu and tribal support!
Just think, all of the old creature abilities...Shadow! a legendary creature with shadow..I want it!
Flashback, Threshold, Madness?
Dare I speak of making your opponents discard cards at random? Hymn to Tourach or Stupor style cards? Yes please!

Read metamorphosis 2.0. Maro has already stated they aren't doing the 3 set or even 2 set blocks anymore. They can now just give us 1 set on a particular plane unless the story itself warrants sticking around longer. I've got my fingers crossed that this is a story moment that warrants at least 2 sets myself.

I understood his comment to mean that he wanted the same thing as I do, that the whole years' content be on Dominaria, which would equate to the three big releases. I have read the article, I also believe I understood the original post in that context, in this regard nit picking the use of the word "block" is a bit... yeah, anyways I would rather this be a useful conversation about something like new creatures
I'm hoping we see a new Jhoira card, this time as an Artificer. Maybe we'll see Squee again as well? And if Karn appears, they can have a touching reunion! Descendents of Sisay and Tahngarth would be nice too. We might even get a card for Victory, the new ship given to Sisay following Yawgmoth's destruction.

I really, really, really hope that they don't focus on the Gatewatch as much for this one! I highly doubt they will, but, it's still a worry. I'm so excited to see if there's any familiar faces we'll be seeing! It'd be so cool if we heard even just references to Urza, or Serra, or the Brothers War, or just whatever! I hope this set lives up to what we're hoping

You and me both. The Metamorphosis 2.0 article mentioned the possibility of a set without the Gatewatch - please let this be it. I wouldn`t be able to stomach Liliana's and Chandra's flavor text quips about how "that old Urza guy must have been something, huh", "look at that golem, what a hunk of junk" and "this old ship is a total wreck".
I would love to se a set where they just leave the Gatewatch completely, cut away from their story line completely, Tarantino/Game of Thrones style, and then something dramatic happens that somehow has grave consequences at a later point or on another plane, and then the Gatewatch could have to deal with the fallout at that other time period or plane. Let`s say some idiot on Dominaria opens a portal to the Phyrexians or whatever, which then invade some other plane where the Gatewatch have to go to clean up their mess. Moving the camera away from the 'watch doesn't have to mean that what's going on is completely irrelevant for them, they should be able to cut away for a while and still provide a linear storyline.

When I hit my 3000 post mark, I'm gone for good.
Stay reasonable, be mindful of your expectations and don't feed the trolls.
It would be interesting for Karn to go back to Dominaria, looking for another way to destroy the Phyrexians, given the history there.
Does anyone know what happened to Urza's spirit? Undead spirits is well established, so I see no reason why Urza of all people would not be lingering around in some form.

My lore guess is that Bolas locks down/imprisons/otherwise occupies the Gatewatch in Ixalan, and it falls to an alliance of legends to keep him from taking Dominaria.

Urza soul was obliterated when the Legacy weapon fired. He, Gerrard, and Yawgmoth are not coming back, ever, as there is nothing left to bring back.

The way the stories so far have been set up Ajani told the Gatewatch that he'd be doing his stuff and they would meet up in Dominaria, so I'm more inclined to believe that we'll get a small respite in Ixalan (the block after the Amonkhet-block of which we've been told it's the one to conclude the default heavy Gatwewatch focus we are by now used to) following Ajani and Vraska on their wacky adventures and meet up again with the Gatewatch on Liliana's home plane - or at the very least with Liliana herself, I expect.

I could be easily wrong, but wasn't Dominaria kind of closed off from planeswalking to it? That could help keep them off if they still can't get there.

Except that chances are, Ajani is going to Dominaria to recruit allies for the fight against Bolas.
Also, as unlikely as this might be, I wouldn't be surprised to see Liliana pay a visit to her home plane.
Note that the set is called "Dominaria" not "Return to Dominaria". Is it not possible that they just create a set of modernized references to the old sets instead of continuing the story as it has progressed to now? An Urza Planeswalker (and/or Legend) would be printing money.

Unless they decide to travel back in time to before the Invasion, that is simply not going to happen. Urza is dead, his soul is gone, he is not coming back outside of auxiliary products. Besides, Urza was a murderous bastard who killed Taysir for calling him out on letting Tevesh Szat murder Daria thus giving Urza an excuse to kill the demon planeswalker.
Besides, we were told specifically that this is Dominaria as it is now, not like it was 300+ years ago.

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).
1) Hour of Devastation - NB wipes the floor with the Gatewatch, as should be expected. They retreat to Dominaria as previously set up by Ajani and Liliana. (The 'smoking gun', if you will, is that they set up a fallback position before heading to Amonkhet, and it's one that Liliana assures everyone that it is one 'she knows well'.)
2) Ixalan shows Vraska and Ajani. Why this happens is fairly crucial and unknown. We know that Ajani is going to recruit allies. It's highly unlikely that Vraska is a member of Tamiyo's story circle, so why does he head to Ixalan? And does he head there directly or does he do so after something happens to the story circle?
3) Dominaria - Takes back up with the Gatewatch and Dominaria. What will be interesting is that this will be the 3rd 'Gatewatch member home plane' to return to. We've seen, since Origins, Zendikar and Kaladesh. Dominaria will be third. That leaves Theros, Vryn, and Alara, to my recollection.
Unfortunately, this doesn't give many hints as to Dominaria's situation. We don't know the last time Liliana was there. I certainly wouldn't pick 'post-apocalyptic wasteland' as a plane to retreat to if given a choice. So... perhaps we will focus on the Gatewatch's interactions with a plane that the player base (at least the enfranchised portion of it) knows better than they do?
Obviously, this is just speculation, but I think we might see Dominaria as the classic "High fantasy-ish" plane.
