So happy to see MTG going back to Doominaria. I hope to see many references to old places/characters/spells for the nostalgia (like Time Spiral had) and I sure hope to have Masterpieces in this set
I really hope we get 3 large sets for this block and they go ham on the creature types and everything. Fingers crossed for a legendary Kavu and tribal support!
No. The large sets will all be different planes. Also Dominaria comes halfway through the year, it makes no sense for the first set of Dominaria to rotate out before the other two.
So, hate to break this to you, but looks like we're only getting 1 set of Dominaria.

I know it isn't a full return, but I think we have a good shot of Dominaria being two sets, although it wouldn't surprise me if all this was is the beginning of catch up for the plane before anything real happens there.
I really hope we get 3 large sets for this block and they go ham on the creature types and everything. Fingers crossed for a legendary Kavu and tribal support!
No. The large sets will all be different planes.
Thats not what they said. They said we might stay on the same plane for 2 or even 3 sets if the story needs it. I am not sure if that will be the case for Dominaria but I think some other planes such as Ravnica will most definitely need more than a single set.
Obviously, this is just speculation, but I think we might see Dominaria as the classic "High fantasy-ish" plane.
No. Dominaria will be a 'post-apocalyptic' world. The reason the core sets moved to Shandalar is they needed a new "High fantasy-ish" plane. That said - they are doing the Dominaria set before the new Core set. It's entirely possible the new core sets will all be Dominaria (Dominaria is rated higher on the Rabia Scale than Shandalar is. Dominaria is at 4 and Shandalar is at 7)
I really hope we get 3 large sets for this block and they go ham on the creature types and everything. Fingers crossed for a legendary Kavu and tribal support!
There's no way this is the first of 3 blocks for Dominaria. It will rotate out separately from the other two. I suspect that the Core sets might be set in Dominaria though instead of Shandalar.
I thought Kavu were Mercadia but after googling looks like I'm wrong. Invasion block was set on Dominaria.
Just think, all of the old creature abilities...Shadow! a legendary creature with shadow..I want it!
Shadow was a feature of Rath. There is almost no Shadow on Dominaria except the few creatures that bled from Rath before it collapsed (featured in Time Spiral)
I understood his comment to mean that he wanted the same thing as I do, that the whole years' content be on Dominaria, which would equate to the three big releases. I have read the article, I also believe I understood the original post in that context, in this regard nit picking the use of the word "block" is a bit...
IT won't happen because of rotation timing. There's no way they'd do 3 sets and have the first of those sets rotate out before the other two barring something like a split timeline we saw in KTK/DTK.
Still, it raises the other questions... can PWs forget how to PW somewhere?
It's probably something like Feroz's Ban It's not so much they forgot how, but that they are blocked.
If he is indeed a Castaway, why can he not just PW to the Gatewatch rendezvous?
It was mentioned in another post somewhere that there is difficulty travelling to and from Ixalan - that's why Vraska was so hard to find because she wasn't anywhere anyone could detect. It's possible he's a castaway because he can't Walk away. Again - less to do with forgetting, more to do with the properties of a plane that is preventing it.
Also remember Deadlock Trap prevented planeswalking - so it does happen.
I do have a lot of nostalgia for Shadow because that was the time when I first started buying my own Magic cards with my own money(my allowance, for doing chores). I bought so many booster packs from that block and tried so hard to make a Shadow deck to beat my brother and cousins.
You'll remember, then, that that block was Tempest - which was set on Rath, not Dominaria.

This, of course, assumes they won't tinker with the rotation schedule again.
BFZ and SOI will rotate out leaving KLD, AKH, XLA, DOM and the new core.
KLD and AKH rotate out leaving XLA, DOM, the new core, and the next 2 large sets.
Then XLA, Dom and the new core all rotate out leaving the 2 large sets on their own (plus another large set and the new core when those come out)
That's if they keep the 1/year rotation as it is now - with rotations happening in the Fall (Dominaria is coming out in the spring)
But as I have stated - I'm pretty sure that Dominaria will be the location of all the core sets going forward. The timing of the 3 and 1 announcement followed by this seems fitting.

What I quoted was what I was interested in clarifying. I never said that I expect Dominaria to get 2 or more sets, I said that I'm not sure about Dominaria but I feel pretty confident that this will happen with our next return to Ravnica.
Apparently you missed my point even though you quoted my entire post.
Also, no matter when the rotation will occur, they always run the risk of splitting two large sets across the rotation. Given that they will have different mechanical focuses to an extent, there is no reason this cannot happen.
The plane of Dominaria is even more likely to have this occur if they focus on regional areas of Dominaria in different sets. In that case, this would be no more different than having Ice Age rotate out while Mirage stayed in a format.

Don't consider your assumptions to be facts. Each set is self-contained. Even if they stay on a plane for 2 or more in a row, they still aren't a block, and WotC didn't say they need to be in rotation together; you did.
Whatever happens, I hope the gatewatch is entirely absent for dominaria (with the exception of ajani maybe. I like ajani). I'm crossing my fingers for homarids. A legendary theme would be cool as well. I really hope they do it right because dominaria almost feels like sacred ground to me. If they screw it up a lot of feelings will be hurt
In that case, this would be no more different than having Ice Age rotate out while Mirage stayed in a format.
Well, Ice age and Mirage were separated by quite a bit of time, story-wise, but you are right Dominaria is a big, diverse place. Jamuraa, Otaria, Sarpadia, and Aerona are, in theory, all large and diverse enough that each could support their own large set. Not that I think we'd spend 2 years checking back in on Dominaria, but we could.

It has been a really long time since we haven't had an impending apocalypse in the set. Not counting special sets like consipracy, when's the last time we even had a regional conflict? Odyssey? Scourge seemed like one if you didn't read the book, but other than that we've been courting armageddon by mid-block for over a decade now. I guess there was a bit more to Kaladesh outside Ghirapur, but we were still dealing with plane-wide societal upheaval by set 2. I certainly hope that now that we only have one set, it's not all-apocalypse, all the time.

It would be interesting if the back drop is something fairly simple like a good old fashioned war fueled by a mystery, like Mirage/Visions. That whole conflict started because an island that had disappeared a hundred years ago suddenly re-appeared, and everyone wanted the "alleged" power on said island (never mind that the island was occupied by a powerful wizard whom was said power, namely Teferi, who incidentally one of the people involved in the war, Jolrael, actually knew).
Speaking of which, I am fairly certain that Jolrael is still alive as the Mwonvuli jungle survived the apocalypse(s) of Dominaria fairly unscathed.

Okay, they've said that the reason they would do two set planes back to back is if the story demands it. Does it make sense for only half the story to be in the rotation at a time? Granted we've seen this with KTK/DTK - but that was a split timeline so it actually made sense for one to leave Standard first. We also saw it with Weatherlight/Tempest/Urza's Saga/Invasion... because that was a huge continuing arc that spanned more than 2 blocks.
Even if the sets don't make a 'block' - they are still tied together story wise if they do the same plane multiple times in a row (this they have said) so I stand by my point.
I likewise suspect that this is part of the reason they ditched the 3 block Standard - because BFZ and SOI share a story connection (Eldrazi) as do KLD and AKH (Tezerret leading the Gatewatch to Bolas) and it likewise didn't make sense to split the stories in half across a rotation line.
I'd like to go back to a good ol' folksy picaresque set, a la the first Weatherlight expansion. Who cares about the world on the verge of chaos, let's just explore the plane.
I just hope we don't get a "the world is in grave peril" story. If that happens, I'll be happy as a cat in a tuna canning factory.

Let's not forget that magic is a game about conflict. Ergo, it's stories are driven by conflict. So when we get back to Dominaria, there's going to be some kind of conflict going on, most likely involving one Elder Dragon and a group of upstart heroes.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I just hope we don't get a "the world is in grave peril" story. If that happens, I'll be happy as a cat in a tuna canning factory.

I really have to agree with krishnath. Assuming that Dominaria is the set that shows the Gatewatch 'regrouping after devastating defeat by Nicol Bolas', it would be nice to actually show the healing/catharsis process for them. The best approach would be to start doing exactly what Ajani said to do: gather allies. Can there be a conflict? Sure, but nothing says that they can't build up to a future conflict.
I also find it likely that Dominaria is going to become 'legend land'. I.e., it's the plane with the Legendary focus.
Each set is self-contained. Even if they stay on a plane for 2 or more in a row, they still aren't a block, and WotC didn't say they need to be in rotation together; you did.

Why in the world would creative continuity have any impact at all on a tournament rotation? No one plays Vorthos decks in Standard, unless you count Tribal (which IMO doesn't). Tournament fomats don't matter for casual Magic, which is where you will get people making 'story-relevant' decks. Again, I will point out that unless we shift planes and story focus every fall, you're going to get this break. This has the net effect of forcing the Spring set to finish a Plane, and also never allowing them to have a Spring set and a Fall set on the same plane.
I really hope we get 3 large sets for this block and they go ham on the creature types and everything. Fingers crossed for a legendary Kavu and tribal support!
No. The large sets will all be different planes.

And let's be honest. "If the story needs it" most likely means "if the Gatewatch is heavily involved". I'd love for Dominaria to get two (or more!) sets since we probably won't ever revisit it again until the 50th Anniversary, but if we get more than one, it'll be because of the Gatewatch, not because of any desire on WotC's behalf to appease nostalgia.
EDIT: I found my answer here: http://mtg.gamepedia.com/Block#Three-and-One_Model
3 Standalone sets + one core set every year. No more 'Blocks'.
Here's hoping, but WotC has disappointed in the past...
