Good. Time to get back into Standard. So ends the worse period of the format since Caw (the period defined as the bans from Copter onward), and hopefully all the big announced changes on the horizon will keep the meta diverse for the foreseeable future.
That's all that was needed in Standard, and no moves were needed in Modern at the moment . They also decided to lower the number of B&R announcements: the next one will be on August 28th.
This quote is of high interest for the foreseeable future:
To that end, we considered several weird or off-the-wall options. We discussed something we called "pair banning," where two cards could not be played in the same deck but could be played separately, a tactic other TCGs have employed. We looked at making other cards legal for Standard that otherwise wouldn't be, like Pithing Needle and Duress. We looked at restricting and even functional errata. Ultimately, these created more problems than they solved for this particular issue, and while we might keep exploring newer options in the future, for now we're sticking with our tried-and-true solution, even though we, like you, would rather it not come to this again.
It shows they DO want to think outside of the box, should be interesting to see if it actually gets employed.

I am relieved that they choose Marvel instead of Ulamog for the ban. Ulamog was designed fairly, a great payoff for getting to ten mana. Marvel was always the real problem bc we know that cheating on mana costs walks the edge of dangerous. If Ulamog got banned, Marvel would switch to the next best spells and continue to be a menace, especially with new sets released during its lifespan. Now we can look forward to a standard where you don't have to worry about the newest, best, expensive, game-ending spell cheated out on turn four.
Ulamog was the issue with the Marvel deck. I do not like this banning.
Oh PUH LEEEZE. Ulamog was around for a year before Marvel came around without it ever creating problems in Standard. It was played in ramp decks, and that's it. Would a turn 4 Nicol Bolas be functionally any different than a turn 4 Ulamog? The answer is obviously no. Marvel should never have been printed as-is. It needed to go, and Standard is going to be a far healthier and more fun format because of it.
Ulamog was the issue with the Marvel deck. I do not like this banning.
And before Ulamog, it was Emrakul. And after Ulamog, it would have been Bolas, and after that, whichever big card they decided to print next. The problem is always the engine, the card that allows you to cast a card while ignoring its mana cost.
It's fine with me. Honestly they're just going to tone down MTG in the long run because either the synergies are too powerful or the answers to the meta aren't powerful enough.
Slow down the game then control wins. Speed up the game, ban whatever sped it up.

This shows how messed up R&D is right now. To even consider these "barbaric" solutions...
I have no problem with this ban at all. Let us hope that Standard can be a healthy format now...at least until Hour of Devastation is released and we find more crazy and degenerate combos.
It should definitely be noted that the next B&R announcement is going to be skipped because of all the recent Standard bans, and the next one won't be until August 28th after the next Pro Tour.

Lapsed DCI Rules Advisor - Retired from playing but still hanging around
I'm not shocked or anything, but man, they've become really ban-happy lately.
I don't understand why they can't just print Pithing Needle. The card's not tied to any specific flavor; it could have taken the place of any craprare (Hazoret's Favor or something) in AKH.
I think the Marvel deck needed a ban and I agree with banning the namesake card instead of Ulamog, BUT holy cow, I could not be less tempted to play standard than I`ve been for this last year. All these bannings! If your deck doesn`t get hit by a ban directly, it could just as well fall victim of its following meta shake-ups. You need to love changing decks and buying cards to hang on to that format right now. Here`s hoping for better times.
Edit: Now bring me my news story about digital Magic.

When it comes to banning, Wizards will frequently go after a deck's enablers rather than its win conditions or removal options, if they have the choice. Emrakul was an exception.

This topic has already been discussed extensively, but I disagree. I believe Aetherworks Marvel was the issue.
