In a few hours from me writing this, MaRo's Metamorphosis v2 article will be released. Once that happens, this thread will be unlocked and discussion about it can begin. However, given the current state of standard and how people's views about WOTC currently are, we expect this to become a rather incendiary topic. This is why the discussion is prefaced with this warning: Keep things civil. While criticism of WOTC is perfectly allowed, we do not allow any personal attacks, flaming, veiled threats or anything of the sort. Once the discussion about the article starts, keep this in mind:
Attack the Idea, not the Person.
We will be keeping an eye on this thread and people who break this warning will recieve 1-point warnings, no questions asked. So please, keep it civil. And at the same time, please also avoid one-sentence responses like "This sucks" or "This is awesome". We're trying to go for discussion here, not spam.

Return of the 3-set block and core sets! Nice! I am well pleased.
Not really the return of the three-set block - it's three large sets that each are drafted alone, and may take place on different worlds (but may not). It's pretty much the exact opposite.
From what I'm reading it mostly gives them flexibility. A world may simply get one set if it's meant as an in-between, whereas some worlds might get 3 sets if huge changes are around. Solves the problem of being forced into a rigid structure and may make for smoother transitions.

I'm a bit confused by the new set paradigm (can't really call them blocks anymore as there will effectively be no more blocks), but I'm happy for the return of core sets. I will say, I do approve of the general model - it sort of resembles how Standard used to be prior to the Two-Block Paradigm and effectively eliminates the problems that the Two-Block Paradigm brought with it (I personally feel like it was a mistake).
The only thing that bugs me about it is that having what amounts to "one-set blocks" is really going to put a damper on storytelling, unless they plan to get rid of the awkward breaks between sets.
I think less "masterpieces/invocations" will make everyone happy, especially collectors. They need to be something special, not something that's done in every set - that kind of takes the fun out of it.

It's tough. I get why they did it, but the issue lies in the fact they work so far ahead. The consistency of the block model I think created an environment where the players kinda knew what they were getting. That we can get overlapping sets or not, depending on the theme, I think causes a bit of uncertainty. I do like this in that you can have a "Return to" set without requiring it to be in two sets. But i also feel like we'll have a situation where we have a set in a world where players really wish it were in 2 sets, then the next set takes up two sets and the players don't like it and wish one of the other sets were taken up by the world they really liked.
This is no doubt an incredibly drastic change and a major metamorphosis. This is also incredibly extreme of a change. It's one thing to fit core sets in, it's another to drastically change the block structure. I'm honestly scared, as the last time they did something so incredibly extreme, they reversed it only a few days later.

I'm really not sure how to feel about all this.
It is scary because it's one of the biggest changes in Magic's history: since the end of Khans of Tarkir block we've gone from 3-set blocks to 2-set blocks without a core set, and now to "1-or-possibly-more-large-set blocks" with a core set. I guess the good news is that if it somehow doesn't work, they'll revert to a previous paradigm or try a different solution.

These changes definitely seem to be a step in the right direction. I am most interested in the execution of the 3 + 1 Set Model. Seeing how infrequently they gave us reprints, I am excited about the return of the Core Sets and am interested in how they manage to work that out. For the 3 main sets, it is kind of cool that they are giving themselves the option of having just 1 set on a plane or 2 sets on that plane if they want.
I also like the scaling back of Gatewatch members in sets. I personally never felt that strongly about their presence, but I know a lot of people didn't like it, so it is nice to know they are listening to people and changing things up.
I am disappointed that they are scaling back the Masterpieces. Those were fun additions to sets and most (I like the Invocations, but I am not enamored with them) were very nice to have to put into EDH decks.
Overall, these seem like positive changes that will hopefully help out Standard and Modern by getting cards into players' hands as well as making each set more exciting for drafting and card availability.
I like the change, to be honest. It, like LouCypher said, gives them flexibility in how much they want to flesh out a set or not. I am glad that they're bringing back the revamped core sets because there are plenty of missed reprint opportunities that they could probably have used if they had core sets currently (Searing Spear with Hazoret, Lightning Helix with Oketra and Hazoret together, etc).
I can't wait to see the changes flesh out. I would've loved to have seen energy used more in Aether Revolt but it being a shorter set limited the amount of cards they could've done it with.
Glad that they're removing the lottery from some future sets; I always thought masterpieces were ridiculous anyways.

"The essence of every world, every spell and every thought is power. Nothing else matters, because nothing else exists."
Wow, I like almost all of these changes, but I'm afraid it's kind of sending the signal that WOTC is a college freshman who's changed his major for the third time.
Seriously though, it's weird, but I'm really excited about the return of core sets.
Well I'm happy core sets are back but the way he worded it makes me think there won't be a whole lot of powerful cards. Now that we have three large sets will they all be on different worlds? I think the old 1 big two small was the best. Now blocks are dead as someone else mentioned. This is how they did things at the very beginning of magic with each set being independent.

How will this work with standard rotation? When will the rotation occur and how many of these stand-alone sets be included in standard at any one point?
Interesting that they're basically scaling back to the Beginner (Planeswalker Decks) -> Advanced (Core Set) -> Expert level (Block Sets) product paradigm they phased out a while back. I thought they killed that because they realized players just bought the newest thing regardless of its "intended market", but I guess the pros now outweigh the cons.
They are giving up predictability for flexibility. I can't see how this is anything but positive. Less predictability for players in the new products will reduce fatigue and increase interest. More flexibility in the design team will give us more of what works, and a quick departure for what doesn't work.
They are still working 2 years ahead, though, so it could be difficult to react to feedback in a timely manner. But this is really unavoidable.
I didn't really miss Core sets (though after Magic Origins, I was actually impressed by a Core Set just to have them go away). But with my 5 year old just learning Magic now, I think I'll enjoy being able to play them with him. It was tricky building decks out of mechanically simple cards that he could understand. I think with new core sets focusing on new players, this will be the perfect product for me to play with him.

It's not TOO hard to have a Core Set have simple but powerful cards. A 3/1 soldier for W, for example would be super simple and very powerful.
Honestly though, I wish the new Core Set WASN'T standard legal. It would let them do more things for reprints and casual magic players. Having what, essentially, would be a simple focus masters set (Basic Masters, if you will) would have been a GREAT opportunity that I think is missed. Though I understand the need for new players to be able to play in standard
How will this work with standard rotation? When will the rotation occur and how many of these stand-alone sets be included in standard at any one point?
If they do a 2-year Standard rotation, then we'd be looking at six expansions and two core sets in each Standard rotation. Something tells me they won't do that, though, because that's a huge card pool for Standard with all the sets being "large".

core sets are also important to reprint cards and always keep them in standard without having to print them in a block
I'm optimistic that this will also let R&D explore some themes that maybe they were reluctant to dedicate two sets to. Fingers crossed for enchantment world (for real this time) and instants/sorceries world!
This was everything I could have wanted and more. Seriously. I think this might be the perfect reconciliation of everything good between the old and new block paradigms, even though, technically, there won't be "blocks" anymore.
"Everything gets drafted alone" is my one concern: Will this produce better draft environments? It'll certainly produce more, and variety is definitely the spice of life, so I'm looking forward to four full different Limiteds a year.

Power and complexity are two completely different things. Lighting Bolt is incredibly simple. It is also powerful. Same with recall, for that matter. The titans, too, were all pretty simple (except maybe sun titan).
