C'mon Really? Two black woman planewalker in a row? What is next, Asian and/or homo planeswalker in a row?
Hope magic doesn't do the same thing that "Marvel" do with their sh1t and turns racial inclusion into a fanaticism.
you know what would have made Samut a good planeswalker, that also fit the theme of her being super fast; if they had put a line of text at the bottom of the card that said something to the effect of "if it is your turn, you may activate loyalty abilities of 'samut' anytime you could cast an instant." and of course you would still only be able to use her once a turn unless other wise altered. That would have made her abilities far more understandable as to why they are so weak, but would have at the same time made them much stronger. severely missed flavor opportunity unfortunately

That would actually make Samut a lot better. Opponent wants to go in for a swing? You give one of your blockers double strike. Your opponent plays a strong-effect-yet-weak-body creature? Dice it into ribbons before it gets out of hand. Opponent marvels into a ulamog? Bring out your ulamog and kozilek in return. As also you could for instance +1 on your turn, -2 during your opponent's turn, +1 on your turn, etc as it ends up turning her -2 into basically a -1. The cost for her ultimate would need to be much higher though if she can pull this kind of stuff off.
I just think making her a planeswalker in the first place is lazy storytelling that reeks of the kind of "Can [my favorite legendary creature] become a planeswalker?" questions that MaRo is constantly fielding on Blogatog. It's like they can't have a character play an important role in the story unless he or she is a walker. Lame.

I can't believe they didn't notice that Golden Delicious was already in Standard when they made McIntosh. How could they miss such an easy combo?
How can you beat that when the only removal we have is Granny Smith. Sure, they say they will print more answers, but the best we can hope for is Braeburn level of answers.

I quite like this. That would have been new for a planeswalker (minus Teferi's ultimate) and give that sense of speed. Honestly I don't think they could have made her burn any higher. My biggest complaint about her is that she lost her speed motif. If she had any combination of what you suggested, having flash, or just her first ability granting haste, with or without double strike, would have been better to at least keep the haste motif going.

Or, they planned to make her a PW and wanted to build her up first? Remember folks that these decisions are made long before you even know the set's name. Samut was going to be a PW before we even knew who Samut is.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I quite like this. That would have been new for a planeswalker (minus Teferi's ultimate) and give that sense of speed. Honestly I don't think they could have made her burn any higher. My biggest complaint about her is that she lost her speed motif.
maybe when she sparked, she ended up running into AJ and she's just tired from carrying him back l.e. Hodor?
That is why I don't believe MaRo for a second when he says a non-human would be uninteresting/unrelatable as a planeswalker.
They are/were going to make a Magic movie with Twentieth Century Fox, and that may be why the current storyline revolves around a superhero team made up of four humans and an elf, going from plane to plane and righting wrongs. All of the main characters can be played by human actors, and will be more relatable for audiences than CGI-generated non-humans would have been. Also, the central premise makes it very easy to create sequels in new settings.
Maybe its just me but I have no faith in the movie and think a television series or web animation series would work better to advertise the game. Its like this really weird obsession to have a live action movie when I will be honest, a huge amount of them end up decent to horrible done. Even the Warcraft movie which was in production for ten whole years, had a 165 million dollar budget, grossed 435 million and yet can only come out with a 7/10 or 23% (rotten tomato) in ratings.
Okay, am I really gonna be the first one here, 8 pages into this thread, who is actually happy that we have a black character (and a female one at that) finally taking center stage in the main story? Seriously? Yall think it's boring?
I certainly don't consider her to be interesting because she's black. Especially when this character was made quite recently; her card art and flavor has much more going for it than two cards and numerous stories gave Samut.
For what its worth, I like Samut better than any member of the Gatewatch. But still means that I like her about a tenth as much as I liked Djeru. The reason being the Djeru was written as a product of the culture he's from- like real people. Samut is written like most members of the Gatewatch- her values are generally our values. They weren't afraid to have Djeru drown his own cropmate despite it being abhorrent from our sensibilities- because it perfectly matched everything that he was taught his whole life. Luckily our resident heroic planeswalker happens to disagree with everything we would see as wrong with this world while conveniently absorbing all the diligence and drive its harsher values were designed to nurture.
Its the same thing they did with Nissa. A reforming xenophobe forced by calamity sweeping across her homeworld to accept the differences, assistance, and even friendship of people unlike her, while clinging desperately to the old ways of the tribe which she bears the legacy of alone would have made for a far better character than the friend of trees we got, but we have to 'like' Nissa and people typically don't racists- even recovering ones. The only proper way to treat racism is to pretend it doesn't exist- so that whole angle got retconned out. And in the process she lost all the 'humanity' that would have made her a good character in exchange for being a good person.
[quote]
I find the human angle boring and overplayed. A whole multiverse out there and humans seem to trigger their spark far more often than any other race of beings. How about an Aven, Jackal, Sphinx or Naga walker from this block? Pumping out human walker after human walker in the same combination of colors as before is predictability plain and simple. A Fantasy world should be that, Fantastic not routine.
While The Gatewatch has caused an overabundance of human walker reprints, when it comes to newly designed walkers, the real problem is that almost all of the females are human. Counting from Theros onward (which seems to be the point when diversity started being taken seriously), Samut, Saheeli, Kaya, Arlinn, and Narset are all human. Only Kiora and Nahiri are not, and both of these are actually characters designed earlier than this point (Kiora was spoiled years before she got cardboard; Nahiri was shrouded in mystery but conceptually existed since Zendikar did.) On the other hand, Dovin, Nixilis, Ugin, Daretti, and Xenagos are all non-human males. (Keeping in mind that Nixilis can't return to human form unlike Arlinn who switches between furry and flesh at will). Meanwhile only Dack is human. Ashiok is genderless and also non-human.
Are we, as wizards audience, really incapable of recognizing human emotion and internal conflict and connecting with them if they are not played out in a human form?
No but executives are incapable of letting companies put money on anything that hasn't been done before.
WotC's other flagship product, D&D, is chock full of people pretending to be dwarves, gnomes, halflings, tieflings, dragonborn, drow, warforged. Hell it's in fact harder to find a human majority party. You'd think suits would be more welcoming of humanoid characters, they're pretty much reptilians after all.
I always picked Liliana as the Grimm's Snowwhite kind of Middle-European-style white. That might just be her fair necromancers teint and Innistradi fashion sense and the air of fairy tale I get from her origin story.
Middle-Eastern is a geopolitical term. You're as likely to find a blue-eyed person between Suez and the Levant, as in California.
And so we come to a strange point, no Liliana can't be Middle-Eastern because she's Dominarian and the Middle East is a geopolitical region on Earth, and if what MaRo was trying to say is that she's meant to have arabic features, that still doesn't mean much because there are non-mixed arabic people with white skin and light eyes since they have historically occupied a very large expanse of land with great bio/climate diversity that produced different addaptations on different populations.
This is why I hate this PC newspeak, on one hand you have malevolent racists saying stupid ***** like singling out Mexicans as a "race" or that slavic people aren't "white". On the other you have benevolent racists shoving people into their PoC box and forcing their narrative down on people to the point they'll try to convince you that you're "opressed" because you're from India even if you're the richest and most influential person in the room.
It's racism either way.

I'm no animator, but I think animating Ravnica with all those gothic-style buildings everywhere would be a pain in the ass. They would probably have to rely on bad CGI to make it happen.
Mods, can you rename this (derailed) thread to "complain about anything you can think of just because" please?
Seriously, all of this over a single planeswalker who is a "human". Nobody has anything better to do?
Does "nothing better to do" include complaining about other people's complaining?

As to the Magic movie I'll take a pass. Games never seem to translate well into motion pictures.
As to the cards. Does anyone think Bontu's board wipe will have an impact in Modern? I'm thinking it doesn't replace Damnation. And it would be hard to play early game knowing you are giving the opponent a free turn. Seems maybe a 1 or 2 of in the SB in certain metas.

You definitely wanna sit this next set out then. According to MaRo it's gonna be 'Nicol Bolas with a dash of Egypt'.
I'd like to hear your ideas for how they do a multiyear storyline where Nicol Bolas is the arch-antagonist but we never actually see him on any of the cards we play?
If you just don't like the idea that the storyline took us to a plane that is dominated by Nicol Bolas flavor, I guess that's just how it goes. I see some folks really like it. I kinda like the flavor of the plane itself, the Hekma, the Trials, all that much more than the stupid horns everywhere, but whatever, I understand why they chose him. Convenience, mostly. To me, the best thing about this block is how they perverted classical Egyptian mythology into a totally messed-up place that services Nicol Bolas instead. The population is living in complete bliss and happiness, devoted to this 'religion' that brings their lives meaning and gives them self-worth. It's just obscene what he has done to this entire plane. I rather like that. Before Amonkhet, Nicol Bolas felt like this stupid Bond villain who sat in a chair stroking his cat. Amonkhet (to me) changed all that. He really is a very, very bad guy just like the Phyrexians are. I mean, they're straight up horrifying.

The same way they did it with Yagawmoth? Sure he had a bargain and will and occasional his influence would show on something (much like how bolas does like agent of bolas) but the man himself never had a card named after him. He was one of if not THE greatest villain in mtg history.

and Ravnica would actually probably be easier to do than a nature-heavy plane like Lorwyn.
It turns out that environments that are full of straight lines are easier to draw/model than "natural" environments.
Those wouldn't really be animated anyway-
They'd be done by an environment artist,
while the characters would be handled by actual animators.
