Samut is sutch a boring character also. A boring planeswalker in both card design and character design. How dreadfull.
Need more non humanoid walkers but they keep talking about this crap about we wouldn't conenct with a non human character blablabla. Thats a stupid excuse.
Completely agreed. Samut is one of the most blandly written characters in the block, so naturally she's a perfect fit for the Gatewatch. Her first card was an pushed yet incoherent mess of abilities and her second card is the most boring, generic planeswalker card I've ever seen, not to mention it being underpowered.
100% agreed. I really can't express how disappointed I am both that Samut is the native planeswalker, and with how BORING her planeswalker card is. But then, I guess it makes sense; a bland card for a bland character.
Djeru would have been a FAR more interesting choice.

That's also one of their stated reasons why a return to Lorwyn is unlikely, and it's a complete load of crap. Consider how much people love all of the standard non-human tribes, especially freaking dragons. If people aren't connecting with non-human characters then those characters are just poorly written. On the topic of poor writing, are people honestly connecting with the one dimensional pulp fantasy rejects in the Gatewatch? I can't imagine that's seriously one of their priorities, they've been doing a pretty miserable job of it for the last few years.
I'm convinced their market research consists of asking a room full of teenaged boys what they think is cool.
Samut could have been an Aven. Same Naya color identity and title (Voice of Dissent). Then make their planeswalker card naya in identity as well at the same CMC with it being 1WRG. Loyalty stays the same. +1 ability could make a 2/2 white bird warrior token with flying ( ). -0 ability creates an emblem that gives your creatures haste ( ). -7 ultimate remains the same ( ).
Maybe they shouldn't have made the first 10 human planeswalkers all caucasian so they wouldn't have to catch up all the other races later.
Sarkhan has looked east-asian from the start, Tezzeret is not quite "white" and Ajani is a cat with an african name who comes from a pseudo-mesoamerican culture. Bolas is a dragon.
1. Bolas is appropriately nuts. I doubt he makes a big splash in Standard, outside of being a possible Marvel target, but in Grixis EDH decks (particularly himself and Crosis, the Purger) he's a total house. You'll probably never use the ult, but everything else is pretty solid, and gaining loyalty to Mind Rot (with exile!) all your opponents every turn is gas. Only downside: not much immediate board impact, though if you hit the right thing off his +2, that can change. Two thumbs up.
2. Black EDH decks are drooling over Bontu's Last Reckoning, but in any other constructed format I just don't see it. How many formats allow you to essentially take a turn off after wrathing? Add in that it does nothing to hit Gideon or HoK and it seems like this barely lets you stem the bleeding at all. MAYBE against a vomit-your-hand deck in Modern like Elves or Affinity, but I'm not sure what shell it would slot into for that.
3. Samut is hot garbage, for two reasons. One, while Tooth and Nail as a planeswalker ultimate fits nicely and is probably long overdue, her other abilities are weak as hell. I mean, Forked Bolt? Really? Two, her sparking means that Djeru probably won't, which means that instead of an interesting character at a moral crossroads with B/W leanings, we get another generic R/G "I'm cool because I'm a rebellious loose cannon" cardboard cutout for the Gatewatch. While my hope is that the last Story Spotlight shows Bolas eating her, I won't hold my breath.

Well obviously the naya walker Samut is going to fight Nicol Bolas in a maelstrom of pure mana, do some magic trick to make Nicol Bolas fight his own soul and... Oh wait. That was Ajani.
Man, I'm a minority among the minority on this website. I don't mind Samut being a PW; personally I found her way more likeable than Djeru. But then again I also like the Gatewatch and the recent story direction for Magic. Guess I'll just be the most vocal local Maro and Wizards supporter.
Might have been said already but we can already see how her spark will ignite: Djeru dying to Bolas. The only question I have is will she join the Gatewatch and if so what will her Oath do?
I'll give you a sincere answer instead of the usual snide attempts at wit that plague these forums.
Since speed is Samut's focus, my guess is her oath helps you speed out creatures and planeswalkers. Thing is, Oath of Ajani already has the cost reduction effect down pat. Since her own PW card doesn't grant haste, perhaps her oath's creature-related effect does ("At the beginning of combat on your turn, target creature you control gets +1/+1 and gains haste until end of turn"). As for the PW-related effect, my guess is maybe she helps your PWs gain loyalty faster, like "If one or more loyalty counters would be placed on a planeswalker you control, one plus that many loyalty counters are placed on it instead" so now your PWs' +1 abilities become +2 abilities and so forth.
As for her reasons for joining: well, the Gatewatch came to her world to fight the trespasser ruining it, so that alone might give her reason to join the cause. There could also be some kind of honor code, like "you helped me in my hour of need, so I'm repaying the favor by lending my speed to your cause." Of course she could also simply part with them on good terms like Saheeli, an ally if not a member per se.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
LMAO! Whoops. That wasn't supposed to leak. We just revealed the main parts of the story.
Remember that department WotC just set up to do better quality assurance?
Yeah... guess they've got some work to do now...
Seeing as how you think the department called Play Design has anything to do with QA outside of gameplay (and metagameplay), in particular the actions of the web team, explains a lot about the mindset others must have had when they prematurely criticized the department's whole creation.
Man, I'm a minority among the minority on this website. I don't mind Samut being a PW; personally I found her way more likeable than Djeru.
I hope you don't mind me replying, but your position misses the heart of the issue. I think so, too: Samut is more likable than Djeru. I know which of the two I would prefer hanging out with if they happen to planeswalk into the neighborhood.
But Djeru is the more interesting character. His story has potential to go into many directions. He seems fully indoctrinated, but might break faith during the Hour of Devastation - or follow the path of the worthy despite his inner turmoil... or turn out to grow increasingly resentful of Samut's denial of his highest deity and just snap into the direction of feeling that now as a planeswalker and maybe some additional insight in consequence should still stand with Nicol Bolas, because he still feels that Samut and the Gatewatch have interfered where they have had no right to.
Samut's story arc is just that: a ballistic curve where within some error margins it seems quiet easy to predict where she lands. She was an initiate once, but always more rebellious than Djeru and her acceptance of Bolas as the "Trespasser" came to her easy and early (before we first met her), so one of the most interesting struggles of any initiate becoming a dissenter is already behind her, and her actions during the time since were... well, laid out during the less well written parts of the Amonkhet story and were either unclearly motivated or solely focussed on ideas of which the inception is not clear to the audience (Djeru supposedly being some kind of savior who can talk sense into the gods).

[thread=239793][Game] Level Up - Creature[/thread]
2 blocks in a row with a 4-ability walker, anyone thinking this is a new trend? This bolas isn't bad tbh. In terms of power level, it's pretty close with the original one but geared towards multiplayer (flavor hit!)
Samut, I think, was rushed. They probably originally had another gatewatch walker designed but replaced it with samut since people were getting bored of them. The card is mundane and you'd feel like her abilities would be closer to gideon.
If the "Last Reckoning" is a cycle, we might just get to see some really good effects. These should be especially good in EDH given how common mana rocks are.

I thought the planeswalker spark was supposed to be rare. How fortuitous that Samut has one and it advances the plot just so.
Would you rather we didn't get the native planeswalker for this block? Or maybe we should showcase how rare a planeswalker spark is by re-using the same five characters every single set instead of introducing new ones. Especially new ones that the less represented demographic can relate to, because who cares about the dark-skinned female players, amirite?
That's a lot of disparate conclusions to jump to based on my post. Were you just waiting for the right post so you could spring your straw man? For the record, I don't care if we get native walkers on each plane, because it's a dull trope at this point. They're planeswalkers. It would be much more interesting for them to show up on planes to which they are not native, like Tamiyo in Avacyn Restored.

Can you name all of the creature types with at least 20 cards? Try my Sporcle Quiz! Last Updated: 6/29/20 (Core Set 2021).
How many formats allow you to essentially take a turn off after wrathing?
im pretty sure this card will be in the maindeck of 8rack as a 1 or 2 of in modern or at least in the sideboard, they only need one open mana to annoyingly cast raven's crime turns after turns.
my friend runs this deck as his main deck and he seemed pretty happy about it, i told him it could be good but what if i cast a reality smasher the turn right after you wiped my board? he said what if you cast it and i have 4 mana open and a mutavault? take 3 damage instead of 5 but i eat more damage thanks to your other creatures. he said if he manage to reach 4 mana, he still could fatal push other creatures if he really needs to survive, and lets be honest, beside reality smasher, there isnt that much creatures with haste roaming around in modern so the ''no untap'' close doesnt affects him that much. besides goblin guide and monastery swiftspear what else is played with haste?i guess through the breach counts but he should have made you discard that card by than...
with ravens crime and his high land count, its the perfect match for his deck since he doesnt need much open mana for his 1-2 mana spell and a wrath for 3 is crazy good when facing any creature heavy deck like almost every deck in modern right now.

Okay, am I really gonna be the first one here, 8 pages into this thread, who is actually happy that we have a black character (and a female one at that) finally taking center stage in the main story? Seriously? Yall think it's boring?
It's not "convenient," like some of you are saying. I think it makes perfect sense that the Hour of Devastation and the return of Nicol Bolas, basically causing an entire plane's way of life to collapse, would result in someone's spark igniting. And for those of you saying that it's too coincidental that they picked a main character to spark, they literally could've done that with any other planeswalker character ever to first appear in a second set. Imagine seeing a Domri Rade legendary creature card in RTR before his planeswalker card in GTC. And nobody complained when Narset got the same treatment.
And yes, I do agree that it would've been more exciting as a Naya card rather than ANOTHER RG walker. And yes, I do agree it's a bit underwhelming (especially that -2). But this will likely not be Samut's last card, so I'm fine with it. In fact, this just makes it easier for me (a collector) and more casual players to get their hands on her.
Anyway, Bolas also looks really cool.
Bontu's Boardwipe looks interesting, but probably won't see play. 3 mana now and at least 3 more mana later is a steep price to pay for a cheap boardwipe.

I find the human angle boring and overplayed. A whole multiverse out there and humans seem to trigger their spark far more often than any other race of beings. How about an Aven, Jackal, Sphinx or Naga walker from this block? Pumping out human walker after human walker in the same combination of colors as before is predictability plain and simple. A Fantasy world should be that, Fantastic not routine.

Why does everything have to be a social justice? 3/5 of the main cast of magic's good guys are female. Kaya was a female person of color. Saheeli was a female person of color. Nahiri, Kiora, Narset. It's harder to find a block without a female pro/antagonist. We're all upset that the card is *****. I don't care what shape or color the character is. The game is first and foremost just that; a card game. ***** cards in the flashy mythic slot make for negative feedback.

Humans are the most populous race in the multiverse so it makes sense....also boring though it is Wizards market research shows people relate better to human characters.

Oh I completely agree, its boring and bland, and i'm wondering where this market research comes from, who are they polling, are the results skewed?
I love this thread so much. I agree with so much of it. I was reading through the last 6 pages and wanted to quote and respond to so many things but that would take forever.
I'm on the fan of Bolas bandwagon (both in character and card). I love his new art - it's very dynamic. I didn't necessarily want a regal picture for this card since that is very well depicted in the Conflux and Coreset art already. I like his abilities - whether or not he is as strong as his previous card doesn't bother me because I am looking at him from a casual perspective. In that vein, the card is super cool.
I'm on the bandwagon that wants Bolas to eat the Gatewatch. I kept thinking back to the most recent SDCC Promos: http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/san-diego-comic-con-2016-magic-promos-2016-07-19
I'm sure that this wasn't supposed to be any sort of foreshadowing and that they were Shadows Over Innistrad stylized cards. But I love the thought of them getting completely owned (as they should). They all nearly died in a battle against Ob Nixilis for crying out loud...Bolas should have a field day with them.
I'm on the bandwagon for wanting fewer human planeswalkers. I'm personally much more interested in other species as walkers. Arlinn (human but with an animal twist), Xenagos, Ajani, Kiora, Bolas, Ugin, etc. This is a fantasy setting that I believe should be leveraging the fantastical creatures more. I am instantly more intrigued by any non-human character because it gets the creative juices flowing. Isn't that why we immerse ourselves in a fantasy setting? Why do we need to be so grounded by human characters? Are we, as wizards audience, really incapable of recognizing human emotion and internal conflict and connecting with them if they are not played out in a human form? I really don't think so. I connect with Ajani's story plenty - I don't disassociate from his struggles just because I'm not a giant white lion...
Not to get too political, but isn't it a good thing that nobody brought up Samut's skin color? Isn't that what our society is supposed to be striving for?
I'm on the Samut is lame bandwagon and I'm on the bandwagon for the halting of 2GR Planeswalkers...what is the rationale behind continuing to bombard that space? I am glad that Samut isn't the first Naya Planeswalker. I still think that should be Ajani's mantle. But this planeswalker card just doesn't make any sense to me and part of that is the casting cost.
Finally, I am ignorant to the Number Crunch methodology. So, hopefully someone else can chime in and answer this for me. Is it possible that these two planeswalker cards ARE from the planeswalker decks?
Okay, am I really gonna be the first one here, 8 pages into this thread, who is actually happy that we have a black character (and a female one at that) finally taking center stage in the main story? Seriously? Yall think it's boring?
Samut's race doesn't make her boring. The fact that she's a boring character with a boring card makes her boring. Characters of any ethnicity can be boring. I hardly speak for all black people, and I'm not usually one to dwell on the race of characters, but I think most of us would prefer it if the in-story representative of our ethnicity wasn't mind-numbingly dull.

Saying humans have trouble relating to non-humans isn't wizards making BS, its a part of psychological othering. By default humans will relate to what is the most familiar and like them and harder time relating to things unfamiliar and unlike them. Thats why we like mammals by default more then birds and we like birds more then bugs. Lindsay Ellis goes over how Hollywood does this with aliens and you can relate this what wizards been saying; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srul5Xd2kT4

They aren't, the cards in the planeswalker decks have collector's #s outside the range of the set proper (for instance, see Chandra, Pyrogenius).
Yeah nobody mentioned the character herself being boring. The card is. But since her skin color has been brought up ot made me realize... WotC made the black chick really good at running... Just sayin'...
Also I don't care what color, gender, species or whatever the characters are. It's their struggles that we are looking to identify with not their bodies.

Both PWs are pretty sweet too.
True, yet people have pets of every Kingdom of organisms under the Sun. Its a Fantasy world, throw some fantasy in there Wizards. Its getting to the point I'm rooting for Bolas the kill off the human-centric Gatewatch because they bore me to death. And while we are talking "diversity", why is it just about every human walker is always between the ages of 18-25 and ALWAYS in superior physical shape/beauty? Yes I know the answer, market research indicates. Its starting to feel like the old Ford Model-T slogan. You can have any color of Model-T you want as long as its black. Variety is the spice of life Wizards, spice it up!

Oh I completely agree, its boring and bland, and i'm wondering where this market research comes from, who are they polling, are the results skewed?
Why does it matter?

I'm pretty sure it's 184 in the main set then 10 cards from the Planeswalker decks and 5 full art land. That would make 199.
Also I don't care what color, gender, species or whatever the characters are. It's their struggles that we are looking to identify with not their bodies.
