It's official: Standard is dead. They HAD to ban the Cat at the very least: it was a mistake in design and no amount of hate was going to correct it. It is literately Splinter Twin in Standard.
When Mr. Forsythe goes over standard at the end, he said they needed more data before banning anything, and will reevaluate after the PT. Why wouldn't they just ban the design mistake, Cat Combo, since it is a known error? I know they want Amonkhet to be used first to see if the format will self correct, but it's going to be embarrassing if the Cat Combo and Gideon+Heart push out anything new from Amonkhet.
I think that with the introduction of the midseason ban session we should be much less likely to expect standard bans at the set release ban period. New cards entering the format just adds a bunch of new answers to potential problems and there is very little incentive for them to ban cards in a format that is completely new. We are much more likely to see any actual bans take place at the midseason period moving forward. Forsythe's comments are direct evidence of this and I don't believe this to be a one off situation, this is the new norm (and logically so in my view).

Best part is we got the introduction of "**** you I got Counterspell" invocations (for this block) and then getting rid of the closest thing to a control deck in Legacy with this announcement... Dare I say Wizards are one hell of a united group... LOL
We're well and truly at the age of Magic: the Summoning, boys and girls...
Really shocked nothing was hit in standard. I don't think I agree with their logic tbh, they'll be praying it works out or they will look very stupid when the pro tour is just a sea of mardu and copycat.
I had not expected any changes in modern but I think with the dominance of the current decks something like stoneforge or preordain could help power up other decks.
I think top has needed to go for a long time in legacy but that they finally did act on it is surprising. There's quite a few decks that had used it so legacy is about to have a serious shake up which after so many years of miracles domination can't be a bad thing.
Most excited for vintage. Based on what the pros on VSL have said, restricting those cards should open up more deck options without making workshops a lot better. I hope they're right.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking too, LOL. Maybe they have data from MTGO. It's not too surprising they left Modern alone. It's in a good spot right now and the players don't need daddy to ban something in order to solve Death's Shadow decks. They just need to innovate. Also, Legacy sux now. It's a dying format.

WoTC, thank you for finally announcing the Modern format, an eternal format where everyone can participate.
Honestly, it's a little surprising it hasn't happened before now. The dev team has been complaining about how that card slows down tournaments for more than 10 years now.

I predicted last week no bans in Standard for exactly the reasons Forsythe said, as well as the additional reasons of:
1) Bans tend to make folks investing in the game nervous and they are releasing a set that I think they feel shaky about (hence the full-art lands)
2) They have no idea what the meta could, should, or may look like now. All their testing was based on BFZ rotating and Copter and Emrakul being legal. They also completely missed CopyCat and dramatically underestimated the power of vehicles. They're lost in the woods, so why not just see what the pros cook up before doing something that hurts player and investor confidence?
3) The advent of extra ban's per year means we are unlikely to ever see bans right before a set releases again unless the meta is truly unsalveagable.
Not super shocked at the banning of Top, but it does completely gut the Legacy metagame. Happy to nab more for my EDH decks though.

CounterBalance would have been a much better ban...Top banned means decks like 12-post, Doomsday, Welder, ANT etc all took a bullet meant for Miracles. Not to mention you're basically cut off the best card filtering for any sort of non blue/rogue decks.

yup so weird since they banned copter without even waiting if the format would correct itself also. Card lasted just a couple of months.
This thread is full of idiots... Lightning Bolt is NOT being reprinted.
Many times has a writer in Wizards said so, because of the plain and simple fact that it's too powerful for what it costs. x/3 creatures shouldn't be able to die at instant speed for one mana without a signifigant drawback. (like PTE giving you a land)
I absolutely guarantee that LB will not be printed in M10, and you can quote me on that.

I think that is a feature, not a bug - Top is played in a lot of Tier 1 and Tier 2 decks, including the "Best Deck" of the format. It is a card that dramatically increases consistency while dramatically decreasing play speed. That's a whole lot of stuff WotC tends to not like in a format, particularly when it has fueled a metagame that is mostly shifting but generally solidified in its Tier 1 for a year plus.
