wait, what? Cleansing wipes out Eldrazi and Affinity and is TRIPLE WHITE. literally the fact of high cmc is all they have in common. am I missing something?
They are both in a way sweeper everything but lands.
We wanted to avoid references to the Book of Exodus. Using living religions as fodder for fantasy game pieces trivializes that religion.

That's odd, they referenced plenty of stuff in Theros, and Greek/Roman mythology is a religion of its own. Wizards is perhaps a lot more sensitive when it comes to Christian/Catholic related topics, evident by changes they made to cards in the past (Such as Unholy Strength), avoid cards with God subtype until recently, yet no problem using Shindo religion as base for Kamigawa.

Thats why they said living religions. Which also also why they didn't use much Hinduism religious references during Kaladesh (the only really religious thing they had was the angels being red-skinned and four armed).

Living as in "more popular", I think, because there are still people following older religion. Understandable, consider Wizards want to keep the sells going, at least they didn't redesign MtG as dramatically as YuGiOh with theirs.
Wizards. So scared of offending anybody that they offend people who don't care that much, thus still offending people. Do you get it? Because I don't.
Don't forget that they did have a large lawsuit towards them at one point in time because of inclusion of some Christian themes, the inclusion of demons and angels, and items of religious text that actually made it at one point in time to where there were no "demons" in the game, only "beasts"

Now this doesn't speak for everyone who follows old religions but I had a co-worker who is a neo-pagan, her and her family followed the Norse gods and how they feel is that how they worship is very different enough from how their ancestors did they don't really find offense to stuff like Marvel, etc since its not reflective of their current way of worship (hence they call themselves nob-pagans) and as long as it isn't something super offensive (for her it mostly when people would say she is going to hell for following false gods/demons,) they are kinda used to pop culture/fantasty using their relgion.
As for Shinto the way I understand things religion isn't a major aspect of life for Japan who while not a "dead religion" thier isn't really anyone who would get offended.

Shinto is very much alive, just not dominating, still holds quite a ground in Japanese people's heart. Admittedly, Japanese people themselves are much forgiving on utilizing their religion for pop cultures (queue various anime) compare to Christian/Catholic sects, same with Chinese with their pantheon of deities (they were mortals once, after all).
Before we deviate too far, I think you'e right about using religious references without offense, therefore I don't see the problem of using Exodus or other biblical stories as background for a plane. Their primary reason, I suspect, is to reduce resistance and complaints from conservatives.
I think the most important part to remember here is that while Theros was THE Greek plane, and Kamigawi was THE pop-culture Eastern Asia plane, Amonkhet IS NOT the Egypt plane, it's a Bolas plane while also NOT being "the" Bolas plane.
They also repeatedly stated they wanted to draw on the living parts of Egypt rather than the dead parts of Egypt, which is why there is less of the tomb raiding and mummies.
Maybe we'll get more of it in HoD as we move outside the Hekma and interact more with the "wild" zombies outside.

What do you mean it's not the Egypt plane? It's very very much the (ancient) Egypt plane.
Also there are quite a few mummies. Like seriously, a LOT of mummies.
In their development articles they mentioned it's about 50-50 Bolas/Egypt, with more Egypt in Amonkhet, and more Bolas in Hour.
I'm pretty sure that's not the same image that was on the booster mockups,
so it's probably not on the PW card.
There's likely 2 Bolas planeswalker cards, right? One in packs and one in a planeswalker deck?
Given that PW decks are (usually) meant for beginner, they can freely make Bolas the most expensive, flashy PW ever, without it being playable in tournament. It can probably have an ultimate that literally says, "-15: You win the game," that kind of effect, but cost 10 mana to play it.

A religion doesn't need to have literally zero followers before we can call it dead. If a few hundred people believe in the sun God Ra, I'm still going to call that a dead religion.
Because they said if they wanted to make a pure Egypt set they had more than enough to do it but they didn't want to at this time.
This is why it's not >THE< Egypt set as a perfect representation as Egypt, but like I said, a Bolas set with inspiration from Egypt.
There's a major difference.
It is the Egypt set, we're not going to see another world that is top-down Egypt but no Bolas. They said Amonkhet was top-down ancient Egypt. Just because they are also doing top-down Bolas for Hour does not mean this is not the Egypt set.
This is why it's not >THE< Egypt set as a perfect representation as Egypt, but like I said, a Bolas set with inspiration from Egypt.
Your reasoning: Amonkhet is not 100% Egypt and 0% Bolas, so it is not the Egypt set.
Reasoning I expect you to apply: Amonkhet is not 100% Bolas and 0% Egypt, so it is not the Bolas set.
Reasoning you seem to apply: Amonkhet contains both Egyptian and Bolas inspiration, so it is the Bolas set. (This seems weird to me.)
Statements by Wizards: The plane of Amonkhet contains inspirations based on both Egypt and Bolas. The two sets of the block set on this plane will each focus on one of the two inspirations; Amonkhet is the Egypt set, Hour of Devastation is the Bolas set.
---
Taking these things together I'm going to say your statements don't reflect an objective view of reality.
(Note that there is a slight differences here depending on whether you talk about Amonkhet, the plane, the block, or the set. None make sense with your statements.)
Further: I strongly suspect that after this block Bolas will lose interest in Amonkhet, but the plane will continue to exist for a possible return at a later point in time to Amonkhet when it will be "Egypt without Bolas influence".
They are both in a way sweeper everything but lands.
We can clearly see the waterfalls to the left of the frame running red with (presumably) blood, just as in the first Plague of Egypt.
Expect blood, frogs, lice, locusts, hail, disease, dying livestock, darkness, and death.
Wizards already confirmed that they won't be using any Book of Exodus stuff;

I could see them not doing a Bolas for a planeswalker deck since 3 colors would be much for newer players
