I was wondering, what exactly are the specific terms of the reserved list?
For example in this day and age could WOTC get around the list by reprinting the power nine with different back, square edge and gold border like the collector's edition decks they printed a long time ago and label them as not legal for use in sanctioned tournaments?
If they could get away with doing it this way, I don't see why they wouldn't try reprinting the reserved list in a non-legal set for drafting purposes. Think of it as a serious version of a Un-set, meant for causal play.
They've always been able to get away with that. They did it a few times with premium versions like with Phyrexian Negator. It upset enough people that they said they'd never use that loophole again. So I don't see them using any other loopholes to get around it either at this point.
I'm just as curious what the commons and uncommons are just as much as what makes the rare and mythic slots. In fact, I'll go as far to say it's the commons and uncommons choices that is the deciding precipice on whether I draft this and/or buy packs.
Between this and Masters 25, this is their chance to Make Paper Pauper Pauper Again, and flood the market with commons that people will actually be able to buy at common-level pricing, and return Pauper to its ideal of being buildable on a shoestring budget. Simian Spirit Guide! Manamorphose! Street Wraith! Lotus Petal! Sleight of Hand! Chain Lightning!
Hopefully, there would be Tarmogoyf in it. To lower the price even more.
Possibly, but they're probably (imo) going to wait for 25 Masters for another reprint on Tarmogoyf—
they'll want their big, iconic cards to be really sought after in that set.
I expect Iconic Masters will have Mana Drain to really help drive sales.
Now that I'm writing this out, it sounds a little backwards,
so who knows?

I think WoTC should print new cards in addition to reprints in ALL Master's products, like what Commander just did. Make their set legality matter like Commander does and skip Standard in the case of the Modern Masters series and skip both Modern and Standard in the Eternal and Iconic Masters series.

Yes! This is actually a beautiful idea! They can use this opportunity to explore design space of things they've previously abandoned, like the Tribal card-type and old abandoned evergreen abilities like banding, regenerate, rampage, and what have you. I approve!

Woah woah woah! Woah! You are trying to bring in at least six good uncommons/commons. Asking that from WotC is like asking your shadow to make toast.
This is a Masters set, where only the mythics and rares matter and we only get about 3 uncommons/commons. Then they'll talk about how none of the uncommons/commons fit "because draft/limited". We gotta kill all hope quickly, after all we are seeing 10$ packs and 24 booster boxes yet again because "can't hurt those collectors and investors". Us "normal" Magic playing folk just wouldn't know what to do if we could get Simian Spirit Guide in a non-limited print run, we might just going crazy from being able to get these uncommons and commons far easier than $25 a playset. In the end half of those will be bumped to rare "because limited" and they'll wave it away just because they printed a card.
Aaaand sarcasm over.
Your idea is a good one. The uncommon/commons are the most important part of every Masters set, it's just a shame they only really got this area right once with the Masters sets.

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I'm very aggravated with wizards of the coast and their reprint policy over the last two years and I doubt they are going to bring happiness and cupcakes with the next two masters sets, unfortunately. It feels as though they have started using TCG Player trade values to justify the card value they stuff into sets far more than they used to and are constantly tweaking and nerfing the card choices in the sets or stacking it all on the cost of the booster box. Most of us crazy "100+ usd a month on MTG singles" players are getting less and less return value as the years roll by. I know I'm probably going to back out of the hobby entirely if the prices keep going up.
Minus things on the reserved list, if they are doing a nostalgia bombing run on people my guess is that we should all look at what cards are in Odyssey through probably Kamigawa block. For mana I'd love to see an uncommon print run of the Odyssey filter lands and then do the enemy cycle Filters from the Lorwyn block, as they probably wouldn't do the full cycle. I guess I just aim for disappointment these days.

With a theme of Iconic Creatures, that should inform their choices some.
You are literally the first (and only) person I have seen online correctly understands what '*I*conic Masters' will be about.
Thank you.
Masters 25 will be the set that includes '*i*conic' Magic cards from Magic's past. (There's a little 'i' there. Big difference.) Like 'Tribal' vs 'tribal' different.
Really wish folks would realize and understand this.
@Colt47, I don't quite understand your actual complaint. You're complaining that they are reprinting too many cards too frequantly, thus killing their collectible value, or you're mad they're setting an arbitrary bar at what cards they're willing to reprint based on what it does to Box EV?

The problem is, the Iconic creatures of Magic are the likes of Serra Angel, Sengir Vampire, and Shivan Dragon.
Unfortunately, people who buy $10 premium packs exclusively available through hobby channels won't spend that on packs where those cards are the featured and prominent elements.
They have to stray from 'Iconic creatures' somewhat because Iconic creatures can't drive sales on a premium set.

Bad for investors and speculators. Ideal for collectors. Reprints make it more feasible to collect cards that would be pricier if not the reprints. Collectors that actually collect (not 'collectors' who appropriate the title of 'collector' because they don't like 'speculator' or 'hoarder') love reprints.

They can print all the rares to be like Shivan Dragon or Mahamoti Djinn powerlevel and then have some super sweet uncommons and commons. I see no problem reprinting cards like Moxes or powerful mana ramp cards in a set where the strongest creature in the game is a shivan dragon. The commons and uncommons will carry it in price.

Well, my hope is that wizards has realized they have a growing problem with card availability on the market and are attempting to actually start addressing the climbing price issues with major cards like Noble Heirarch, Karn Liberated, and goodness knows how many others. There is just too much pressure being put on too few cards thanks to net decking, and while this is happening other cards are getting bought out simply because speculators think they see an opportunity. They are now attacking EDH / Commander even more aggressively than old modern cards now. What exactly does wizards think the recourse is for players that play kitchen table or only occasionally attend fnm and never bought some of these cards? Go pay 60 dollars a card for a playset of some mythic / rare that is only priced that way because of net decks and modern PT results? Instead they seem to think that these people will be happy with Phantom Nishoba.
The key to being iconic is to print the cards that people want to play that already exist and not keep trying to make people want to play with some new contraption all the time by force (hello standard).

You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.

Everything about Konami's management of Yugioh prioritizes sales above the game, brand and its players/fans to the point of compromising it. Yugioh is trash. So it's ironic you would write that. I have 12 years experience with Yugioh to know the difference.
Iconic Masters is billed as also having iconic spells, but it's clear Wizards is aiming to intertwine the two. And while some members here may sulk and hiss at the prospect of draft themes, the fact is there are going to be draft themes for different color pairs in the set, themes that iconics can play into without resorting exclusively to tribal.
