Baneslayer Angel is pretty good too. For the sphinxes Sharuum I guess. I guess Nicol Bolas and Ugin as planeswalkers, qualify as dragons.
On the subject of "iconic", to me implies a direct association with something, so expect Shivan Dragon, Serra Angel, Avacyn, the X spell hydra that can't be countered, etc. I'm very uneasy and worried about this set, to be honest. If they have a lot of casual jank in it and it sells, we might see "Sylvan Masters - Including a bunch of forest-based staples, with new art on Reap and Sow!" or somesuch.
Waiting to be surprised here, hopefully the power level is kicked on some reprints.

The "Crazy One", playing casual magic and occasionally dipping his toes into regular play since 1994.
Currently focusing on Pre-Modern (Mono-Black Discard Control) and Modern (Azorious Control, Temur Rhinos).
Find me at the Wizard's Tower in Ottawa every second Saturday afternoons.
Im pretty sure this is a "kitchen table" masters, but they obviously can't call it that. At least thats what all the vague wording hoo hah makes it seem like.
I love how that page says "Because of the popularity of Iconic Masters, the distribution will be partially allocation based."
How do you gauge popularity for a product that nobody knows anything substantial about?
They probably are gauging based on the print run and what they are putting in it. I'm thinking it's going to be a dumping ground for cards they missed in modern masters 3, as well as commander cards that are getting pricy.
The praetor from new phyrexia, archangel of thune, mikaeus, the unhallowed, etc.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
So, uh... is Flusterstorm iconic? I badly want a Flusterstorm reprint.
See, this is the problem with this set, we have no idea what to make of it. Might as well have called it Random Crap Masters 2017. Iconic is not a property that goes hand in hand with need for a reprint, are we supposed to expect Shivan Dragon and Serra Angel in this thing?
Personally, I would find it hilarious if they just reprinted Revised without the RL cards in modern or frontier borders (with their original arts obviously).
What Magic player today wouldn't want to draft something so nostalgic and win games with a craw wurm for ol' time sake?!
Ironically, while Shivan Dragon and Serra Angel may be remembered as the best beat-sticks of their time, I can't help but feel that no card image from that era was more iconic than Hurloon Minotaur. It may be vanilla, but suffice it to say that if that Minotaur somehow doesn't make the final cut for Iconic Masters, those designing the set haven't been playing long enough or don't even know what the word 'Iconic' means.
Anyhow, the best I can come up with myself is a game in the top 8 of a PTQ back during Urza block in which we were starting game 3 with time already expired, so the tiebreaker rule was that whoever had more life after 3 turns would win. And I lost to... healing salve.
I'm concerned about the "no previews" policy; if I was going to a draft tournament for this product, I'd like to know ahead of time what draft strategies to look for. As is, I content myself with speculating on the draft archtypes and reprints.
I figure that the draft archtypes will be based on the iconic creatures, the idea being that each pair has a strategy that the two iconics in that pair's colors play well with. Flying matters seems like an easy choice seeing as 4/5 of the iconics regularly have Flying. The presence of Hydras strongly suggests a +1/+1 counter theme which could be expressed in all five colors through iconics like Archangel of Thune, Sphinx of Magosi, Desecration Demon, and Predator Dragon.
I could see Orcish Lumberjack making a return as part of RG Ramp. I expect Counterspell and Lightning Bolt in there, though I could also see variants thereof designed to play with specific strategies, like Galvanic Blast as part of UR Artifacts or Deprive as part of GU Landfall.
Regarding the Iconics themselves, these are things I expect or would like to see:
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Shops have to put in orders for this but have no idea what it is.
The set will be fully spoiled in September at HasCon. Product is released in November. There's plenty of time to put in orders if the value is there.
Actually my friend has to put the order in this week or month to make sure he gets his allocations.
Wow I wonder if that's normal. I don't know specifics to running a shop but I'm shocked that any Magic product demands placing an order 6 months before release and without any information other than vague phrases.
This 6 month pre-order screams of a small print run. Take into consideration that WoTC also mentioned product will be in limited supply in their "distribution will be partially allocation based" quote.
WoTC is subtly letting us know this product will be in short supply (I think).
Although I think the commissioning was different back hen and I'm not sure about arts from artists that may have past (praise to Chris Rush, one of the best there ever was)
Speaking of which, where is Desert Nomads in Amonkhet? Are they RL? What a shame. Awesome art on that would've been cool in modern frame Foiled

It isn't normal. I owned a store for 10 years and you normally are given your allocation amount about 4-6 weeks out from release date and you tell them who you are ordering through (if not them) and how much you want. Even super short prints like MM2013 and Commander's Arsenal didn't ask for orders until right before shipping.
I personally think this is WotC making pretend hype to ensure that stores spend their holiday dollars ordering this instead of other items from other manufacturers by tying up retailer dollars now.

If we can get confirmation of this on a wide enough scale, stores having to order so soon, it would be foreboading. Vendors and stores ordering so soon makes it so that the players will undoubtedly get hit hard because vendors and stores will know they can literally sit on these boxes of money and sell for triple at a trickle's pace.
It helps whichever stores can get some for sure and if it really is this limited of a print run then these booster boxes will be gold. The Money Masters.

Actually, depending upon the limited release nature of certain products, the 6 years that we ran a local gaming store had us in positions (early on during the craziness of M10/Zendikar/Worldwake, before wizards figured out the demand spike and got large enough initial print runs to not have shortages), as well as on more limited print-run items we had to place orders earlier to guarantee getting the largest initial allotment possible from the distributors. Mind you I left the shop the end of 2012, and there have been plenty more crazy limited products since then. During the M10/Zendikar/Worldwake stuff, we had to place the orders and have them locked in much earlier than normal. I took a gamble on M10 ordering that about 2 months early without any significant information to go off of, other than that there would be new cards in it. And then had to put in the order for Zendikar 3 months early knowing zero about the set and just decided it was better to have plenty of something that was going to likely end up having supply issues, than not, and then 2 months before release on Worldwake for the same fears of what happened with m10/zendikar. In the end the gambles with M10 and Zendikar paid off huge, as I told the owner to max out both orders from the main distributor that we used and at that time was the largest number of boxes on an initial order I had ever had the owner place just for my side of things (I owned/ran the magic singles part of the shop, though the owner could get some of the boxes off of me if needed beyond what he was getting from wizards at the time) (100 boxes of m10, and 125 boxes of zendikar + 25 more boxes on a secondary order before release). Things never got quite that crazy for normal sets after that as wizards started keeping better track of potential demand after that and initial print runs didn't run into any significant issues until I believe RTR, which had a brief supply issue but then was caught up with quickly enough. (Keep in mind that while the orders from the distributors had to be placed that early, the payment usually didn't have to be received until about 2 weeks before release, though wizards orders I think required earlier payment from what I recall the the shop owner that I worked with saying).
All that said however, 6 months ahead of time with no real inkling of what could be in a set, other than the masters name, and limited print run being significantly implied all over the place, I mean, really, I suppose its really up to the shops whether they want to take the gamble in a similar way to what I did back with M10 and Zendikar more specifically, and hope for the best with it. It could also be the distributors themselves being put in a bind because of past situations revolving around masters sets and the supply/demand situations there, as well as the tiny bit of information that was (unintentionally wasn't it?) released about the name and not much else of the set other than release date. Basically for those shops wanting the largest possible allocation, the distributors would seem to be asking for them to commit super early, with the likely idea that the later an order is placed, the less the shop is likely to get. 6 months ahead of time is still crazy though. If I was still at the shop though, I would probably take the gamble based upon past performance among other things, with the idea that at worst you would be likely to break even, and at best you made sure you ended up with more of the product than other places should the product turn out to be a real winner.
I really can't see them doing this, but if they truly wanted this set to feel "iconic" the best way to do that would be to make the set ONLY cards FROM the reserve list. Imagine that, a draft able set that is only cards from the reserved list. I think that would be outstanding. They have a ton of great cards to choose from, and would have zero problems selling the set. And I don't think a single person would even be able to argue that the set doesn't feel "iconic". Of course they will never do that, but it would be probably the most amazing thing the company ever did in its history. They don't owe anything to the collectors for real. Chronicles was a bad idea, AT THE TIME; when owning those hard to get cards actually meant something, and their was some mystique to it. Now it's just selfish on the collectors. Those cards will still retain a ton of value, but no one should have to pay $200+ just to get one set of duals to even think about breaking into older formats. I think it would be a giant home run.
I think the mods should start imposing a soft ban on talks about the Reserved List outside topics specifically created to talk about the Reserved List. It gets really old seeing every topic about reprint sets get hijacked by circular debates about the List. They never go anywhere (hence, circular) and just drown out more interesting discussion about the set itself.
I want to talk about what cool reprints and draft themes we might see, but I'd like to know it isn't going to get buried by another page of RL debates first.

I'm hoping that IMA features some P3K love. I really wish that IMA's lands are reprints in themselves, wouldn't it be awesome to have some P3K basic art?! Or some basic land art from Shards of Alara, those are beautiful in foil...like the Plains with the desert art, it's over $5!
I could kinda see the Tempest enemy pains and Mirage fetches being the uncommon dual cycle... kinda...
I dunno what to think of the set overall. I think it'll have a more modern slant than EMA did. That strange focus on each colour's primary fattie tribe in the announcement suggests that "iconic" refers to what makes different aspects of the game stand out, rather than what cards from history do. But what that MEANS is still something I can't guess. EMA was my favourite set of last year so I do hope it feels like a sequel.
EMA was also my favorite set but I got burned so hard on my box that after I repacked all the boosters (promised friends we'd draft the box) I drop kicked the box and all of the maaaaaybe $80 in junk inside it about 10 feet into the middle of the room.
I don't want to have to drop kick another Masters box of bulk junk. If this set is supposed to commemorate 25 years of the game, lets try making it the best Masters set in the game and avoid putting Blaze or some other awful red X spells as our mythics...Looking at you WoTC.
