Khans were announced at PT by MaRo. BFZ at PAX. Shadows at another PT (or GP?). Kaladesh during announcement day, and Amonkhet at least with image. This was...just thrown to us, without any ado.
Anyway, it is just rebranded Atlazan. Too bad, liked the previous name more. Now hoping that Conquest of Power will have less stupid name.

Oh man I can't wait for the names with huacan and Ixl and whatnot to sound like a complete doofus. The other day I was talking to a friend from Mexico and he was talking about his neighborhood with a decidedly Aztec name. He laughed when I butchered the name. Aztec names are NOT Spanish. At all.
There's a fantastic mexican restaurant nearish me with an Aztec name. My sister is an anthropologist who has been to central and south America several times, and she can nail it. Me? It's "That dope-ass mexican place".
I always felt that Atlazan following Amonkhet was a miss, both starting with A's felt weird and i seem to remember the forums expressing the same feeling. It seems like the product testing has been heard and Atlazan has been renamed.
FINALLY, after 11 years the mystery of Ixidron's home plane has been revealed!
I am pretty sure you are joking, but in case you're not. Ixidron's home plane is Dominaria, on the continent Otaria. It was created by Ixidor, a rather powerful mage that also created everyones favorite angel before Avacyn: Akroma.
I have to wonder if a Mesoamerican World will resonate better with western audiences better than a Japanese World did.
I have my doubts.
I certainly look forward to getting a few more Coatls in Magic, I guess. Sure they won't errata any of the old ones to be Coatl, enraging Vorthoses everywhere. (See: Nagas)
Kamigawa's main problem was oversaturation of legends, mostly *****ty mechanics (Sweep, seriously?), and overly expensive cards. It second problem was that it came after the single most broken block after Urza's Saga.
Also, considering that Quetzalcoatl that the Coatl are named after is described as a snake with feathered wings, doubtful.
Only somewhat serious students of mythology even know Susa-no-O or Amaterasu-o-mikami.
I'd be a fair number of anime geeks are familiar with Japanese mythology, but I'm guessing they were mostly dissapointed Kamigawa was the "Japanese folklore" plane and not the "feudal Japan battle anime" plane.
See my above answer regarding Kamigawa. Although what you said was probably a contributing factor, the problem primarily stems from poor mechanics, to many legendary creatures, cards that where mostly to expensive to cast to be competitive, and coming after the most over powered set since Urza's Saga.
I was, but it's just fun to say "Ixidron from Ixalon".
"Ixalan is just a rename of Atlazan" are you ******* kidding me. Just admit you were wrong. I don't know how you could have gotten that Atlazan was a Meso-American world when they only showed a merfolk when most people thought it was referencing Atlantis. Just seems like you're in denial. If the name of the actual set wasn't Atlazan then clearly Atlazan is a fake set, don't know why this is so hard to follow.

Aztec calendar on the background of booster packs. Seems like a huge hint for me.
Also Aztlán is a very well known ancestral home of the Aztec people.

Yeah, it seems pretty obvious that they just renamed Atlazan to Ixalan. My guess (as others have pointed out) is that Wizards saw the confusion that "Atzalan" was being interpreted as both a Mesoamerican set, and an Atlantis-inspired set, so they wanted to give it a name that was unmistakably Mesoamerican.
I guarantee that Ixalan will use the art from the "Atlazan" booster packs in the survey image.
As long as we get an Axolotl creature, I'll be happy.
Technically speaking, Axolotles are salamanders, but I don't see any problem with them in Aztec (or Aztec+Water World) plane.
I am well aware that Axolotls are Salamanders, but I still want to see one as a creature in M:TG, Ethereal Whiskergill is nice and all, but it doesn't really satisfy the "Axolotl itch". Also, they should fit fine into an Aztec based world, as they are native to the lakes surrounding what is today Mexico City (they're also, sadly, extinct in the wild, fortunately they are easy to breed in captivity).

People were being stupid, they were also saying that Atlazan was a flooded Ravnica, which makes absolutely no sense what so ever. >.<

My suggestion: Someone leaked Atlazan before it was trademarked and whoops, some funny guy registered it. Last-minute rebrand.
We'll know for sure if Ixalan is meso-American and includes that art from the leaked boosters.
As far as I can tell, WotC doesn't Trademark set names, just the name Magic: The Gathering and its various derivations, e.g. Magic: The Gathering - Commander.
They do Copyright the text and any artwork they own, though. And Atlazan wasn't leaked, it was deliberately sent out as a research survey.
It makes tons of sense for people to think Atlazan was a Mesoamerican-themed plane. The people who were claiming Atlantis just went with the first three letters, but the entire plane name was way, way closer to Mesoamerican in origin than Atlantis. The package art too had humans that looked like they'd fit that kind of plane. This just confirms what myself and many others were saying, it was meant to be Mesoamerica.
That all being said I'm expecting it to be broadly Mesoamerican, not Aztec Mythology in particular. If we see any Gods I'll be surprised. Kamigawa was too obscure, but Japanese Mythology should be roughly in the same ballpark as Aztec in terms of general US knowledge. It might not even be top-down, but bottom-up like Kaladesh and built around a mechanical focus, or perhaps a split top-down like Amonkhet with Egyptian and Bolas world. Either way, I extremely, extremely doubt that it's going to be Aztec Mythology top-down only plane, though I'd be fine with being wrong. If so though then I'll really question what exactly their reasoning is because it seems totally incongruous with what they've said in the past about top-down planes.

I am fully expecting it to be Meso-american rather than pure "Aztec". I do expect both Aztec, Incan, and Mayan influences however. I also fully expect south and central American animals and mythological beasts (Ahuizotl and Couatl both). I am *not* expecting a School of Piranha reprint, but I will pleasantly surprised if we do get it.
I am expecting the world to be very vibrant, colorful, and full of life.

Well, the point was more the "not a Mythology" part than it being broadly Mesoamerican. I expect it will be broadly Mesoamerican in general, but more what I was driving was that I don't expect them to do a top-down Mythology based set outside of a Norse one some time later on, since I saw someone talking about expecting to see Quetzalcoatl. Maybe we will, but I'll be surprised if we get Gods in this set in general.

A Norse based set is MaRo's best bet to get Squirrels back in M:TG. Because if we get a Norse block without a Ratatöskr expy, I and every other Scandinavian who plays magic will riot.

Well, it's also the last of what I call the big three, the mythologies most broadly known by your average American. Greek (Theros), Egyptian (Amonkhet), Norse is the last one. Past that? I mean, maybe we will see someone get a top-down mythology, but Egyptian already wasn't enough to carry a plane by itself, and we know Japanese bombed as a mythology set. They've already pretty much said that a future Japanese plane isn't going to be based on mythology, so I'll be surprised if they go with anything more obscure than that.

I am fairly certain you have not read the Amonkhet articles by MaRo. Or at least, you have only browsed them. He clearly stated they had enough to do a purely Egyptian based block, but their "short list" is long, and they needed a Bolas block. They realized that the two overlapped some, so they combined the two.
Do they know Norse mythology, or Thor comics/movies?
Considering how adamant WotC is about doing mythology right (see, Theros and the upcoming Amonkhet), they will do the research from actual Norse mythology, but will probably add pop-culture influences on top of that because that is what people expect. They can do this well (See Innistrad and the aforementioned Theros) as they have considerable experience in doing it.

They know of Thor, Odin, Loki and Fenrir as far as characters go. Also Yggdrasil, Ragnarok and Valhalla. I don't think more than that. They won't know about the Aesir, Frigg, Freya, Balder, Tyr, Sif or the various valkyries such as Brynhildr, Herja, Hervor or creatures Gullfaxi, Sleipnir, Warg, Fafnir, Garmr, Jormungandr, Nidhogg, Ratatoskr and the goats Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjostr.
Kaladesh, Amonkhet, then Ixalan?! Three new planes, consecutively?! I'm pretty stoked for this, but I'm a little pessimistic about the dull rehashes that are sure to follow. But hey, new places! Woo!
