With Magic's 25th Anniversary celebration upcoming, we've wrapped most of our product announcements into June, but one Wily Bandar of a set can't wait that long—because you're getting it earlier than normal!
This year, Commander decks return with Commander (2017 Edition) on August 25, 2017. The set features four new tribal-themed, 100-card decks including 56 all-new Magic cards legal in Vintage and Legacy.
Yes, we are releasing four decks this year instead of the normal five, since this year's theme isn't based on the color wheel but some of Magic's most popular, and interesting, tribes!
Commander (2017 Edition) decks will be released in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), and Japanese, and will have an MSRP of $34.99 (only applies to the United States).
Look for more information as we approach August 25!
“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
If Commander is coming out in the summer that means something crazy is happening in the fall supplement slot. Anyway, nice change of pace! I was never a big tribal fan but such decks are hugely popular in Commander and I'm interested to see.
If I had to make proper guesses though it would be Elves, Goblins, Zombies, and Slivers. Now with Elves already had one back in C14 that could potentially mean another race getting one instead. Perhaps humans? That seems a bit lame compared to elves. Birds? Maybe. Angel or Demon? Not enough to really do one I'd think. Dragons? Now that has potential.
I could see the decks being 1, 2, 3, and 5 color decks, but I more bet 1,2,2,5 just to spread the colors out more evenly.
Long awaited, and finally given to us. Well done! Easy to expect Elves (although C14 already had a Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury + Ezuri, Renegade Leader mostly Elves deck), Goblins and Zombies, but what else could be the fourth one? Merfolk is a no-go, so probably something along Soldiers or Warriors if they mean "tribes" in a broad sense, classes included...
Why would Merfolk be a no-go? Four tribes seemed odd until I remembered that White didn't really have a tribe back in the day. I automatically thought of Elves, Goblins, Zombies, and Merfolk since they are the classic, old school tribes.
While I think we’ll get one or two of the classic tribe (Goblins, Zombies etc) but I’d rather/hope them use it to support popular tribal decks that don't have much support.

Because it has far, far less support than Elves, Goblins or Zombies. So little that it's nearly impossible to build a competitive Merfolk deck in Commander, while the other three offer so many choices that you can build an astonishing number of different decks. Sure, they can go with Merfolk and putting some effort to build the deck with a couple of broader sub-themes, but that's a big, big risk.
What about Angels though? That would be awesome! So many wanted an Angel commander deck when C14 was announced, and then Nahiri, the Lithomancer's Equipment deck came. Maybe that's the right time to give us wings!
I think Merfolk are actually kind of likely: You say the Mer are unsupported but they have five lords and a bunch of other stuff from Lorwyn block.
This is the perfect place to print slivers! and the first 5 color commander preconstruct.
I wonder if they can print werewolfs here? I know they use a different printing company for some of these supplemental products. Have they ever said if it is easier/harder for them to print transform cards in this way?
First things first, what does having a skewed color pie for the decks have to do with the number of decks they make? They still could have made five decks. Seems rather odd to me and definitely not an excuse. I'll be interested to see a further explanation, if and when they ever say.
I really, really hope we don't get another Elf deck, and if we do I hope its not Mono Green. It would be far to similar to the Mono Green deck from Commander 2014. Slivers is... kind of boring, honestly.
Hopefully these are some of the tribes we will see.
Fingers crossed for something Lorwyn/Shadowmoor-related.
There will inevitably be at least one tribe getting reprints from that block, but that setting also missed out on Zombies which are... extremely likely.
I'm going to bet on one five-colored deck (Slivers? Humans?) and the aforementioned classics. I wouldn't be surprised if we'll get some more inclusive lords for these tribes e. g. even if we get Zombies, Elves and Goblins (or Merfolk), there would be nothing monocolored. We could get white-blue-black Zombies, white-black-green Elves and black-red-green Goblins.
This is thrilling even though expected. What do you call it? Long-awaited! They have enough tribes going into this that they'll have a full second set of four and probably a third going forward... Angels, Demons, Dragons, Vampires before we even have to make a pause to consider what is next, but plenty of second-tier tribes like Elementals, Centaurs and Giants as well.

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.
[thread=239793][Game] Level Up - Creature[/thread]
I assume it will be more like warrior/wizard/soldier/cleric than elves/goblins/merfolk/zombie. It will allow them to represent the color pie better, especially with only 4 deck.

One cool thing worth noting is that even though we're only getting 4 new decks as opposed to 5, we're still getting 56 new cards, same as last year (and close to the 55 in 2015).

IIRC they had said that printing transform cards where an issue in supplemental products, although they changed something which let them have the cycle of 5 creature to walker in Origins idk if they could do transform card. Although they could still do single sided werewolves.
The more I think about it the more I think we are going to see some more obscure tribes, you can build goblins decks already. If they hadn't made Ishkanah, Grafwidow I'd say tribal decks like Spiders that just needed a legendary to drive it.
