Bontu the Glorified2B Legendary Creature - God (M)
Menace, indestructible
Bontu the Glorified can't attack or block unless a creature died under your control this turn. 1B, Sacrifice another creature: Scry 1. Each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life.
4/6
This card needs a very specific deck to be decent in. Otherwise, it's not very good. Unlike certain Morbid and revolt cards, it's not like you can go to combat, have one of your creatures die, then activate this on the main phase. You have to kill one of your creatures before combat, both attacking and blocking, which can be a very tough penalty for not a very powerful creature. And while its activated ability is cheap, draining for 1 life and scry 1 just isn't very good.
"unless a creature died under your control this turn."
Does this seem like a strange wording to anyone else? As opposed to, "unless a creature you controlled died this turn."

I know he thinks I'm impressed by a 102 MPH fastball in the 9th inning... Ok, I'm impressed, but that doesn't mean I can't crush it.
I know so many decks where (s)he is basically always a creature.

Ugh, I don't know how it'll play, but it reads horribly. Card disadvantage to attack for 4. There will be some decks that'll use this, but I suspect most will skip it.
So the green God looks head and shoulders above the rest? Long live Rhonas!
I actually think he's pretty solid. So often the threat of an activation can warp the way an opponent has to approach combat. There's no way for the opponent to keep you from turning him on short of depriving you of every single creature.
I think he and Rhonas are the most playable in this cycle. And it isn't even very close.
It should've been "unless a creature died this turn".
No, no it shouldn't, not in the color that can get things out of the way very easily. Every removal spell being "target opponent loses 4 life" in addition to its other effect(s)? NOPE.

Yeah. You're right. I'm just mad at how more balanced (mechanics-wise, not power level wise) the Theros Gods were in relation to these. I knew Bontu had to have something to do with death but damn this is dull.

"The essence of every world, every spell and every thought is power. Nothing else matters, because nothing else exists."
I am very dissapointed that the gods are so similar to the Theros ones. The color pie is so big for each color, still the seem more like variants rather than actual new gods. If this was return to theros, they could totally be a new Heliod, Thassa, Nylea, Purphoros, Erebos. I was eexpecting something new and what we got is alomost the same. An opportunity lost.
I was really hoping for something graveyard-related. Damnit.
Like Kefnet and Hazoret, this one requires a specific deck to be built around it if you want it to be able to attack/block reliably. This one is going to switch between attacking/blocking and non-attacking/blocking form more than any of the others. The condition is probably easier to meet for a single turn than Kefnet's and Hazoret's, but it's tough to do it reliably. In Commander there are probably about a dozen better options for a sacrifice deck. They could have at least thrown Commander players a bone by making it "you gain life equal to life lost in this way" instead of just 1 life.
I guess that Rhonas > Oketra > the other three. Kind of disappointing.
So it's a merging of Viscera Seer and Zulaport Cutthroat, and the ability itself gets her online easily, and you have a 3cmc 4/6 evasive indestructible. She'll be around in Commander for sure (Jolt539 on YouTube is definitely going to build a deck for her) and she synergizes with Revolt, so maybe she'll see some Standard play.
I know so many decks where (s)he is basically always a creature.
True, but that's still a steep cost as opposed to just controlling a creature with power 4 or greater like the green God.
I wish it was when any creature died; it would have been much more versatile.
Bontu is cool though.
Overall I feel that the green God is definitely the best in terms of raw power.
Yeah but I know a few sac decks that would love to have repeatable cheap sac. options. And for scry 1 + "fixed" extort thats a pretty good sac option.

To what end though? I guess you are saying it is good for blocking, but it is completely terrible at attacking, which makes the menace really lame.
This card is horrid. It is built in card disadvantage each time it attacks or blocks and for what a 4 power creature on turn 3? Look what you get with it's sad activated ability. You loose 1B mana and a creature and gain what an attack or block from a creature who's power is just barely above curve, a scry, one life and your opponent looses a single life, sorry rarely worth it. This is easily the worse of the gods unless your deck really needs to kill your own crap and even then there is better options. This God is a junk mythic barely playable in limited let alone standard. The worse card of the Gods in Magic. I hate junk mythics, it is like having a winning lottery ticket then to find out the pay out is a quarter. Grrr.

I don't... I don't know how to evaluate this. Does this do something in Modern Aristocrats?

Might as well try it.

EDIT: The more I think of it I would have preferred if Bontu gave card draw, even at the cost of life
