A "broken" two-drop red creature—White has Stoneforge Mystic. Blue has Snapcaster Mage. Black has Dark Confidant. Green has Tarmogoyf. There are those who believe red is missing its addition to the cycle. I and others have offered up suggestions—Goblin Piledriver, Goblin Recruiter, and Young Pyromancer—but none met the mysterious criteria, and the request continues to this day.
I remember this post. From this post, I don't think he tried to hint anything, or that this card was deliberately the missing card. Now, I can understand you are reading into it as such, I just personally don't think so.
I looooove this card! That said, I don't think it's the second coming of Bob, Goyf, Snapcaster, or Stoneforge. All of those cards are incredible regardless what the opponent is doing. If your opponent isn't utilizing activated abilities, Harsh Mentor is nothing more than a bear cub.
It's a really good card, but I don't think it's on the same powerlevel as Goyf, Snappy, Bob and Mystic. Those guys (except for Goyf) create immediate value whereas Harsh Mentor only forces your opponent to play around him. It's not directly doing much. I can definitely see him being played in Modern especially as sideboard hate against various decks or in Blood Moon strategies.
Did I mention that virtually every non-mana engine in the game: Shock! Repeatedly.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!

I will concede that the poster I was responding to is certainly not the problem.
However, I really get annoyed when Red is given tools to overcome its weaknesses.
It's literally the only color in the history of the game
that has remained a viable mono-color strategy for the vast majority of the time.
Red players get OP cards like this all the time,
but I guarantee you they will continue to complain about the few hurdles that remain in their way.
Meanwhile, us Blue folks are expected to use crap like Censor,

I apologize for taking this to a personal level,

a lot of people want this card to work without having a clue or even thinking a bit about it. play-test this thing guys, then come back.
this is 100% bulk and doesn't even come close to classify as the 2 mana powerhouse the other colors have. even young peeze fits the bill more than this
Does this card play around Leyline of Sanctity. It doesn't say target so I'm guessing it does. If so, this card is even better than I thought.
Leyline has been the least of Burn's worries for a long while now.
It's Skred Red that struggles vs Leyline, not Burn.
Burn does struggle to Leyline, there were times especially in Mono Red Burn it was an auto loss. Now with Wear // Tear and Destructive Revelry it isnt as bad since in Modern more players go 2 or 3 color. Also in Modern there is more creatures used in Burn then in Legacy so the Leyline impact is negated a little there. But Leyline if its on the board stops lets use the Championship Deck from Indy Grand Prix last year as an example half the main board thats 20 cards that 1 side board hits. Yes Skred Red and other decks can also struggle to Leyline. Ive been playing and know others Burn for over a decade in Legacy and since Modern appeared. Plus scroll through the long Burn threads past and present you'll see experienced Burn players mentioned/discuss how Leyline has affected them. Also articles of expert/championship players discusing in their deck tech how to beat Burn and Kor and Leyline are usually in their choices. You can play around it but its not that fun to do so like any hate card.
SCG has him at $12 ATM. I bought in since I play burn in modern/Legacy.

I think buying at this price is a big mistake. Long term it may go up in value but while the set is being opened I'll honestly be shocked (har har) if it goes over $5.

Dude, there are three other colours that have rarely ever been viable on their own as well. The reason blue isn't allowed to be viable solo is because it's oppressive and horrible to play against when it's that strong. Mono red has rarely ever been viable as a top tier deck, it was usually a budget option that was healthy for formats. Mono red is never dominant and oppressive, at best it's a mid tier deck and burn strategies are usually strongest when splashing other colours.

Much better.
I'll say that I sincerely believe blue players are, sometimes, very absorbed by the glory of their heyday and/or they are very loud during the spoiler season, always being somewhat obtuse in regards to the fact that mono U isn't competetive in some Standard or Modern season. I believe mono U are the most hellbent players wishing for their monocolor to be viable. This is much more present than mono W, B or G players.
That said, it's true that red players have been treated well for a long time. Recently when mono red wasn't viable there was a somewhat baffling response among players; "why isn't mono R viable!?" Very similar to the positiion of blue players.
The problem is, however, that mono R has historically had a very important role in the game. The point of R has been, for a very long time, to check the base tempo of a format.
WotC has for a very long time used the base speed of mono R to be the signaling function of the meta's tempo. Basically, it was the baseline of the meta's base speed.
This role is actually an important one. Some deck has to be the fastest powerful deck. For a long time, R did that job.
The interesting thing is that most players - W, U, B, R and Gs alike - haven't made a lot of noise about this. A big part of it is, I assume, due to the fact that R very rarely was the strongest deck. The whole point of it was to keep the meta speed in check. Other decks were usually strongest.
All while mono U players were unhappy that draw-Go wasn't an option.
All in all, I think it's complicated. Most things are. But I think that mono R has never been unhealthy to the degree that mono U has been. R has, for most of its lifetime, just been a tempo check of the format.
EDIT: I apologize if this post has been written poorly. I'm a little drunk lol. Neither of these points are made up on the spot - they're long-held positions of mine. I hope you all understand the points.
So didn't see this mentioned yet and there where a few questions about this. The reason it says activating an ability from the battle field is because cycling in this set which is considered an activated ability so they didn't want players getting confused.
Sweet card, love it 9/10 (would have been 10/10 if it hit planeswalkers too)
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.
How is something an artifact, a creature or a land outside the battlefield?
You are right, that this part of the sentence is redundant. However it increases clarity.
Virtually everyone I play with would be claiming it triggers from Unearth, Scavenge, Dredge... and now especially Emblam. Leading to yet another phone lookup, every other weekend. Rofl =S

Legacy Burn barely cares about it, you burn their creatures and win with your own. Combo decks won't (and shouldn't) run it because racing is better than hating vs aggro in Legacy.
And in Modern monored hurting is meaningless because the Burn decks that win are either Boros splash G or Naya and run 4x Destructive Revelry.
I've been playing Burn in Legacy since Rift Bolt was a new card and am much more upset about seeing Leyline t0 when playing Pox than when playing Burn.

We can argue who's played Burn longer as I also play Legacy/Mono Red Decks for a long time. Chalice of the Void and Leyline is what Ive seen the most sided in the Legacy matches Ive played in multiple states and in Wizards home town but thats my experience. Legacy Burn has Price of Progress, Vortex, Lava Spike, Flame Rift that cant touch creatures so if its so simple as Burn their creatures and you''ll Burn would just always win and thats forgetting what removal they may have or creatures that you cant Burn that easy or at all. Everyone's meta is a little different for any deck/card. As for your Modern point I mentioned the 2 and 3 colors but its not always meaningless. I wont make a blanket end all be all statement cause Im sure there are times when its not. Of course you can play around a hate card. If Leyline was not a worry then you'd never see it mentioned or Leylines used at all but hey Im sure we can find examples of decks using and not using it.
You know Im not gonna keep the back and forth here as we could go on and never agree. But maybe we can agree to disagree cause we've mostly had extremely different experiences/view points here. And I not trying to disrespect your view I just have a different one.

Three of the 4 Legacy cards you mentioned bypass Leyline. That's why it's so easy to beat it in Legacy.
Chalice and Chill are the scary ones. Lyline is a minor inconvenience to Legacy Burn.

Yes they do but I was talking about them hitting creatures. I tried to speak civil with you but you twist my words and dodge facts/points I mention so your one of those and not worth the waste of time. Im blocking you. Last word
You're the perfect example for a forum PSA: Don't argue for the sake of arguing if you don't have the mental fortitude to debate and are wrong to begin with.
I don't see the point in arguing. The creature is good.
I have doubts he's going to replace Eidolon of the Great Revel in legacy or Modern because Eidolon hits so many targets.
I have doubts he's going to replace Goblin Guide in legacy or modern because guide speeds up the deck.
I have doubts he's going to replace Monastery Swiftspear in legacy or modern because too many players love the explosive creature.
I have doubts he's going to replace Grim lavamancer in legacy or modern because they both don't have similar functions.
Maybe he could replace Wild Nacatl in modern because he might push burn closer to red, but I have doubts because those that are playing Wild Necatl has Destructive Revelry...
Maybe at best Harsh Mentor will be a sideboard card in burn. I have doubts because we are limited to 15 cards.
If Harsh Mentor does see any play in Legacy it's going to be a UR Delver deck (I'm not sure if modern has a similar deck. Only because Harsh Mentor ability may slow up some difficult decks.
I don't see he going over 5 dollars because I don't see that high of a demand. I will advise to watch your money on this card.
I think it speaks volumes about Harsh Mentor that it is even considered for burn decks. Only the pinnacle of damage engines get into burn and if Harsh Mentor can even be considered a SB card there, that means it is solid. It's a very short list, that of creatures viable in burn.
I kinda agree with Soldier, that some delver variant would be the best home for it as well. In the right meta, it will carry burn a long way, but it has to be just so.
Thus far, I think it's the best card spoiled in Amonkhet. And I do think we'll see a higher standard demand based off of all the vehicle activations from Kaledesh. Where it goes from there, who knows. Maybe he'll lead to some variant of Delver Copter: T1 delver,T2 Copter, T3 Mentor...idk.
