We've had lands that gain you 1 life, now we're seeing the counterpart. I wonder how long before we get a full ten duals that ETBT and ping an opponent?
Who knows, maybe HoD will evolve the Desert subtype to appear on a cycle of enemy-color duals? I say enemy because we have already seen this block's ally-color offering, and while it is possible that HoD brings enemy-color cycling duals, more often than not ally and enemy pairs get different fixing in Standard thanks to enemy pairs having to play catch up. But we can't rule out enemy pairs getting to produce a cycle before ally pairs.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Good 1 mana cantrips, I assume you mean quality card selection like Preordain, becaue we just got a beater Sphinx that cycles for U. The reason they don't print Preordain-like cards isn't actually Standard. It's because of concerns with eternal formats, particularly Modern. 1 mana blue cantrips are incredibly powerful there as they severely empower the tempo of blue combo decks. Of all things, don't blame Standard card design on 1 mana cantrips/card selection. This is one of the few areas they are really careful in regards to eternal.
They could easily print Preordain itself (or Ponder, or, i don't know, Serum visions) and eternal formats wouldn't even flinch
That is true. I wonder why they don't. I could imagine they don't want to reprint banned cards as it would upset players that open the boosters in question when the cards can't be played in eternal. But I don't know for sure. I haven't seen them address your point.
why just target player? Why not target player, Planeswalker or creature?
WRT damage, target player and planeswalker is pretty much the same. Your Sunscorched Deserts though are not the answer to Leyline of Sanctity, however.
Well... regardless, why not creatures? You're trading away your landfall, card advantage and mana for a measly 1 point. At least make it flexible.
Wait what? My Scorched Desert? I don't want it.
You're trading nothing. You still get your land drop and mana, it just produces colorless mana instead of colored mana. You're not giving up card advantage, you're gaining card advantage. You get to keep a card in play, while killing an opponents creature. The only possible thing you lose, and more often than not you won't lose it, is tempo. That will only happen if you want to kill their creature with your land drop, and because of the land being colorless, it prevents you from casting a spell another land would have allowed you to cast.
This is the same problem that Desert had, just on a smaller scale, and it was discussed at length as to how Desert can warp both a limited and standard environment in this thread.
Whoops I remembered Sunscorched being sacrifice not ETB to do 1 point. But it absolutely does not hit creatures. Players only.
The take away I had about the Desert discussion in Standard is that A) it's repeatable damage B) uncounterable and C) hard to destroy. All of which is "unfun". Is that not indicative of the root problem with Standard that what is considered an OK card in any other format is considered warping in the very set it fits flavorwise?
Well the set is now more than half spoiled. Even though there's probably some new and exciting ideas brewing up, there appears to be nothing in this new set that can overcome the oppression of Mardu Vehicles or 4c Saheeli in Standard. So we'll still see those decks around, and if there's nothing more suitable to be used against them, then there's still no point to play anything else at the GP or PT level. Mardu Vehicles is likely now even better with the new Gideon.
But I guess at the very least it looks like a fun set for limited?

As you just pointed out, Gideon of the Trials might well make Vehicles better, which means there's still a point to playing cards from Amonkhet in Standard. Yeah, the Standard-relevant cards might so happen to make the current archetypes better, but at least Amonkhet cards will see Standard play.
Personally, I find the idea of crewing a Ballista Charger with a Vampire, a Werewolf, and a Mummy highly amusing. It's like Monster Mash meets Wacky Races (aka Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf).
And now I'm getting a mental image of the Gatewatch 5 driving around in some kind of Mystery Machine vehicle. XP

My point was that there doesn't appear to be anything to address the current Standard that is dominated by Mardu Vehicles and 4c Saheeli. The idea of Mardu Vehicles becoming better is the exact opposite of what a lot of players hope to see from Amonkhet: instead of making Mardu Vehicles weaker, it's making it stronger.
I assume you meant that you were hoping for new archetypes to emerge from Amonkhet, something like Esper Zombies or Grixis Cycling control? Gideon's Intervention can prevent Felidar Guardian from dealing damage to you, and By Force is relatively cheap yet flexible artifact removal. There's also the possibility of new bannings now that those decks have had some time in Standard.
