Er, he's only indestructible when he's a creature? Why would you use Hero's Downfall on a card you know is indestructible when you can use when that card is not?
So Gideon of the Trials just out-right replaces Gideon Jura in Modern, right? Or at least you could probably run a split between the two. New Gids gives the UW Control lists a quick and easy answer to the combo shenanigans running around the format.

I have the distinct feeling that this Gideon is a lot more flash than substance. It's a comparatively small area where the "ult" is useful. I mean, let's face it, you were going to try and get rid of either Gideon anyway. And if their turn 3 is to play this and ult right away...so? You weren't likely winning that next turn anyway.
It's a cool ability, but I don't think it'll amount to as much as people are saying right now.
I still want him, of course. But that's beside the point.
More or less how I feel about him. He needs a lot of support to shine. He's an excellent Control finisher but I don't think he's much more than that at the moment.
Well...when I look at the other 3cmc mythic card they spoiled yesterday and then I look at the 3cmc Gideon I safely LOL. We're going to need a bigger gun...

Granted, when he was designed, they were almost certainly still under the assumption that Battle for Zendikar would have been out of rotation for a period.
That sounds like a pretty good reason to ban Ally of Zendikar last month...

I imagine the default play pattern will be to drop him and +1, then keep +1ing unless you have a free attack or need to pressure an opposing planeswalker.
New Gideon doesnt scary. 1 000 000 my copycats attack your Gideon and 1 000 000 attck you meh
And this is happening on a turn after your opponent cast Gideon
At least that Gideon dies to Grasp of Darkness (at least, for the next 6 months when Grasp is legal in Standard). I highly doubt that it will be played in Standard until Gideon, Ally of Zendikar is legal, but that new Gideon is just plain powerful with Heart of Kiran.
We need better answers for Planeswalkers.
This Gideon is a lot more defensive than AoZ; if there's a UW control deck, I would expect to see it there.
Yes, this is exactly what everyone seems to be missing. AoZ is oppressive because he's so aggressive. I actually stopped playing him in my Superfriends deck because he was too aggressive. This one locks down an opponent's creature indefinitely, and can 0 out an emblem that can make winning that much harder (especially if you just keep +1'ing him indefinitely).
New Gideon doesnt scary. 1 000 000 my copycats attack your Gideon and 1 000 000 attck you meh
And this is happening on a turn after your opponent cast Gideon
Any opponent stupid enough to leave your Saheeli Rai in an obvious CopyCat Combo deck alone until turn 4 deserves to lose.
Gideon seems good. He will likely come down and effectively o-ring a creature for a few turns, then when you have clean attacks he can start beating in. The emblem is kind of meh. Were you really losing a game in which you have a planeswalker your opponent can't kill?

Well if an opponent is tapping out on the draw vs a player with saheeli on board, that applies to every card ever that makes u tap out like tireless tracker, rishkar, Liliana, the Last hope, even Saheeli Rai, so your either saying all those cards arent scary/good or see play, or your basing a card from a player making a bad play standpoint.
As for my own opinion, its a 3 drop platinum angel in a world with *****ty Planeswalker removal and an alternate form of him that fits on curve with white as its double mana cost, which is very easy to obtain cause lol fastlands in mardu colors(thanks wizards), and you got to realize as he lives on board he's basically a fog to any creature you want as he goes, basically tack his ability on an enemy scrapheap scrounger while you kill off his other threats, and even if you manage to kill as long as he got to 'ult' once, another gideon is basically platinum angel be it him or the ally or even the planeswalker deck one. And we all know how annoying it is to get rid of the Ally of Zendikar.
Ugin is going to get really bad once all the fatties are colourless. I sold all mine. Sell sell sell!
He's going to be absolutely rotten. Hangarback walker has already nerfed him quite significantly. I reckon he'll be $3 junk within 2 months of rotation
While this Gideon is nice, I think that people are blowing him out of proportion.
His +1 slows down midrange and vehicles while his animate ability breaks the mana curve and... that's about it. Still really good but overblown.
As for the emblem... honestly, that's not a factor in most games. Nine times out of ten, the emblem effectively adds the planeswalker's loyalty to your life total. Technically, you add the loyalty counter of each Gideon you play to your life total. With that said, however, nothing is stopping your opponent from knocking you to 0 life BEFORE going after Gideon (other than, you know, pressure from Gideon). Beyond acting as a cute "life gain" mechanic, this emblem only seems to do two things.
1. it stops alternative win conditions such as mill decks.
2. It allows some janky plays that would ordinarily kill you (such as demonic pact)
TLDR: This guy isn't platinum angel. While there are fewer DIRECT kill spells, you can directly attack Gideon in a way that you could never directly attack the angel. Since very few decks count on winning without damage, the emblem rarely serves any purpose beyond "life gain". The other effects are the significant part.
Well, what do you know? Okay, so turn 7 my opponent ragequits. On the other hand, that is what all those Angelic Purges are for--sac a clue, exile planeswalker.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Dude, do you play Modern? This Gideon is great in that format and might see play like immediately in U/W/x control decks that already use Gideon Jura. IN standard we will have 3x Gideons and that emblem is no joke, this card will see play, a lot.
We need something better than Ruinous Path to deal with this. We're going to need to start seeing some dope removal is not...oh boy.
